This self-learning module is for Grade 10 learners taking Technology and Livelihood Education (TLE) in Dressmaking NC II. It is Quarter 1, Module 3: “Draft and cut pattern for ladies’ skirt (Drafting the front and back pattern of a ladies’ skirt).” It teaches learners to draft the front and back pattern of an A-line skirt from their own body measurements, then cut the final pattern.
The module was written by Romana T. Laoyan and published by the Department of Education – Cordillera Administrative Region. It is set for Quarter 1, Week 2.
What learners will learn
The module covers this learning competency:
- Competency code: TLE_HEDM9-12SK-Ia-c-1
- LO 1. Draft and cut pattern for ladies’ skirt. 1.3: Draft basic pattern of ladies’ skirt.
After the module, learners are expected to:
- identify the procedures in drafting the front and back pattern of a ladies’ skirt;
- perform the procedures in drafting the front and back pattern of a ladies’ skirt; and
- develop traits such as ingenuity, resourcefulness, creativity, independence, and passion towards learning.
Key terms
- Skirt: the lower part of a dress or gown, or a separate outer garment, that covers a person from the waist downward.
- A-line skirt: a skirt fitted at the hips that gradually widens toward the hem, like the shape of a capital letter A.
- Pattern: the guide a dressmaker uses when cutting fabric.
- Band: the part of the skirt usually attached to the waistline.
Measurements needed
To draft the basic skirt pattern, learners use their own body measurements:
- Waist measure
- Hip measure
- Hip depth (standard 7 inches)
- Skirt length
- Apex distance (for the dart)
- Bottom circumference
The module says this basic pattern is the starting point for all kinds of skirts.
How to draft the front pattern
| Step | Points | Measurement or action |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | A | Draw a vertical and a horizontal line. Mark point A where they cross. |
| 2 | A to B | Hip depth (standard 7 inches), then draw a horizontal line |
| 3 | A to C | Skirt length minus 1½ inches for the waistband, then draw a horizontal line |
| 4 | C to C1 | ½ inch downward, then a horizontal line |
| 5 | C to D | ½ of bottom circumference |
| 6 | A to E | ¼ of waist measure plus 1 inch |
| 7 | A to A1 | ½ inch downward |
| 8 | B to F | ¼ of hip measure plus ½ inch |
| 9 | F to D | Connect with an L-square |
| 10 | C1 to D | Shape with a hip curve |
| 11 | Check | A1 to C should equal E to D |
The dart
- A to N: ½ of apex distance
- N to M: 3½ or 4 inches
- N to O: ½ inch
- N to P: ½ inch, then connect the points as illustrated
How to draft the back pattern
| Step | Points | Measurement or action |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | A to A1 | ¼ inch downward, then draw a horizontal line |
| 2 | A to E | ¼ of waist measure plus 1 inch |
| 3 | A to B | Hip depth (standard 7 inches), then draw a horizontal line |
| 4 | B to F | ¼ of hip measure plus ¼ inch |
| 5 | A to C | Skirt length downward, then draw a horizontal line |
| 6 | C to D | ½ of bottom circumference |
| 7 | Check | A to C equals E to D, then shape with a hip curve |
| 8 | All points | Connect as illustrated and make a dart |
Notice the differences from the front. The front drops ½ inch at A to A1 and adds ½ inch at the hip. The back drops only ¼ inch and adds ¼ inch at the hip. After drafting, learners cut the final pattern with the necessary allowances and pattern symbols. The final pattern drawing shows the center front (CF) and a 1½-inch back allowance for the zipper.
Activities in the module
- What I Know (pretest): 15 multiple-choice questions.
- What’s In, Activity 1: a clothing word search with 20 words.
- What’s New: list the six measurements shown by arrows on the A-line skirt drawing, then take your own measurements.
- What’s More, Activity 2 (Perfect Partners): match each drafting step (such as A to C or N to M) to its measurement.
- What I Have Learned, Activity 3: identify the measurement shown by the arrow in ten pattern drawings.
- What I Can Do: draft the front and back A-line skirt pattern on pattern paper using your own measurements, then cut the final pattern.
- Post-assessment: 15 multiple-choice questions.
- Additional Activity, Activity 4: name ten skirt types from pictures. The choices are circular, A-line, pleated, box pleat, pencil cut, mini skirt, godet, peplum, gather, and asymmetrical.
Rubric for the pattern drafting task
The drafted pattern is scored on five criteria:
- use of drafting tools
- workmanship
- accuracy
- neatness
- speed
Each criterion is worth 50, 30, or 15 points. For neatness, fewer than 5 erasures earns 30 points and more than 5 erasures earns 15.
How to use this module
- Learners: Answer What I Know first, then work through the parts in order. Finish each task before moving on. Use a separate sheet of paper for all answers and do not write on the module. Use your own measurements for the drafting task, check your answers honestly with the answer key, and return the module to your teacher when done.
- Parents and guardians: Help your child take accurate body measurements. Make sure pattern paper and drafting tools such as an L-square and a hip curve are on hand.
- Teachers and facilitators: Orient learners on how to use the module and track their progress. Score the What I Can Do output with the rubric.
The answer key is at the end of the module. Some entries do not match the procedures in What Is It, so check them before relying on them. For example, ¼ of a 35-inch hip is 8¾ inches, but the key marks a different choice.
Frequently asked questions
What grade and quarter is this Dressmaking module for?
It is for Grade 10 TLE, Dressmaking NC II, Quarter 1, Module 3, scheduled for Week 2 of the quarter.
What measurements do I need to draft a skirt pattern?
You need waist measure, hip measure, hip depth (standard 7 inches), skirt length, apex distance for the dart, and bottom circumference.
Why is 1½ inches subtracted from the skirt length on the front pattern?
The module subtracts 1½ inches from the skirt length (A to C) to allow for the waistband.
What is the difference between the front and back skirt patterns?
On the front, A to A1 is ½ inch downward and B to F is ¼ of hip measure plus ½ inch. On the back, A to A1 is ¼ inch and B to F is ¼ of hip measure plus ¼ inch.
Does the module have an answer key?
Yes, it includes answers for the pretest, activities, post-assessment, and additional activity. The drafting task is scored with a rubric. Some key entries do not match the procedures, so double-check them.

What’s New
In drafting a pattern for a certain garment, procedures should be follow step by step. Using the body measurement taken and to draft the basic skirt pattern use your own body measurement. This will then be the starting point for all kinds of skirt. And now we are going to learn the following in this lesson.
Let’s Try This: Enumerate the measurement needed for A-line skirt which indicated by arrows then take your body measurement for pattern making.
