TLE 10 Dressmaking Quarter 1 Module 2: Draft and Cut Pattern for Ladies’ Skirt (Taking Body Measurement)

This is the Technology and Livelihood Education (TLE) 10 Dressmaking NC II self-learning module for Quarter 1, Module 2: Draft and Cut Pattern for Ladies’ Skirt (Taking body measurement). It is an Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) module from DepEd Cordillera Administrative Region (First Edition, 2020), meant for Week 2 of the quarter. After working through it, Grade 10 learners should be able to find the body points used in dressmaking and take a client’s body measurements accurately before drafting a skirt pattern.

What learners will learn

The module covers the learning competency LO 1. Draft and cut pattern for ladies’ skirt, 1.2 Take client’s body measurement (code TLE_HEDM9-12SK-Ia-c-1). After going through it, learners are expected to:

  1. Identify the different body points for body measurement.
  2. Enumerate the body points for body measurement.
  3. Perform or take the body measurement accurately.
  4. Develop traits such as honesty and valuing accuracy of output in taking body measurement.

Body points: where measurements start and end

The module explains that an accurate body measurement is one of the most important parts of garment construction, because a well-fitted garment improves both the look and the personality of the wearer. Every measurement is taken from one body point to another, so learners first learn these ten points:

  1. Center neck point (center of the neck at the front)
  2. Shoulder tip point
  3. Apex point
  4. Armpit point
  5. Center waist point
  6. Side waist point
  7. Hip point
  8. Shoulder neck point
  9. Center neck point at back
  10. Shoulder blade point

How to take body measurements

The module lists 21 body measurements. The ones used most for a ladies’ skirt are these:

MeasurementHow it is taken
Waist measureAround the smallest part of the natural waistline, inserting 2 or 3 fingertips for ease
Hip measureAround the fullest part of the buttocks, inserting 2 or 3 fingertips
Hip depthFrom the waistline at the back down to the fullest part of the buttocks
Skirt lengthFrom the side waist point down to the knee line, below the knee, or the desired length
Apex distanceFrom one apex point to the other apex point
Bottom circumferenceAround the lower part of the length (around the ankle point for pants)

Other measurements in the module include shoulder measure, bust measure, apex height, shoulder blade distance and height, front bodice length, blouse length, short and long sleeve length, arm measure, pant length, crotch measure, knee circumference, neck measure, and armhole.

A few other ideas from the module’s activities and tests:

  • Horizontal, vertical, and circumferential measurements. Skirt length is an example of a vertical measurement. Hip measure is taken around the body (circumferential).
  • Dividing measurements. Skirt drafting uses fractions of body measurements, so learners practice finding one-fourth and one-half of measurements. For example, one-fourth of a 34-inch hip is 8 1/2 inches.
  • Front and back length. The front skirt is usually longer than the back by at least 1/2 inch.

Activities in this module

  • What I Know (Activity 1): a 15-item multiple-choice pretest.
  • What’s In (Activity 2): solving fractions of body measurements, such as 1/4 of 35 inches.
  • What’s New: with a partner, take the measurements shown in an illustration (bust, waist, hips, back waist, front waist, high bust, high hips, skirt length, inseam, sleeve length).
  • What’s More (Activity 3): describe how five measurements are taken.
  • What I Have Learned (Activity 4): list the measurements and body points needed for a skirt, and explain why accuracy matters.
  • What I Can Do (Activities 5 and 6): identify ten body points on a diagram, then take six actual measurements in inches.
  • Post-Assessment (Activity 7): a 15-item multiple-choice test.
  • Additional Activity (Activity 8): identify the measurement shown in each of six pictures.

Activity 6 is rated with a rubric on three criteria: application of procedures, accuracy of measurement, and speed, each scored 20, 15, 10, or 5 points.

How to use this module

  • Learners: Answer What I Know first, then follow the parts in order and finish each task before moving on. Write all answers on a separate sheet, not on the module. Use the answer key honestly, and return the module to your teacher when you are done.
  • Parents and guardians: Help your child find a partner (or act as one) for the hands-on measuring activities, and keep a tape measure in inches ready.
  • Teachers and facilitators: Orient learners on how to use the module, track their progress, and use the rubric to rate the actual measurement task. Check the answer key before releasing it, since some entries do not match their items.
