This is Module 32 of the Mother Tongue-Based Multilingual Education (MTB-MLE) self-learning module for Grade 1, Quarter 1 (Unang Markahan). Learners practice building and writing words, phrases, and sentences about a topic close to home: the favorite foods of the family.

The module is an Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) material from DepEd Region II, first edition 2020. It was written by Maryann Guiuo Baccay.

What learners will learn

After working through the module, learners are expected to:

  • Give the meaning of the word “paborito” (favorite) or kagustuhan (liking).
  • Recognize their own favorite foods.
  • Practice eating nutritious food every day.

Lesson in this module

The module has one lesson: Aralin 1: Ako at Ang Pamilya Ko: Ang Aking Paborito (Me and My Family: My Favorite). It uses a short family story, picture activities, and sentence exercises to help learners name and write about the things and foods they like.

Key ideas in the module

What “paborito” means

The Isaisip (what to remember) part explains that the things you like very much are called your paborito (favorites). People have different likes, such as food, toys, clothes, and more.

Choosing healthy favorites

The Suriin (review) part gives two reminders:

  • Use the right words when telling about your experiences with your favorite foods.
  • Not every food we like to eat is nutritious or good for our health. We should choose food that is good for the body.

The story “Paborito ni Ina”

In the story “Paborito ni Ina” (Ina’s favorite), Ina’s mother often cooks puto (rice cake) and her father catches fish. The family enjoys both foods because they are tasty and nutritious. Learners answer questions about the story by unscrambling letters, for example “o t u p” becomes puto and “i s d a” becomes isda (fish).

Spelling words correctly

Several activities ask learners to pick or write the correct spelling of familiar words, such as choosing mani (peanuts) over “main”, ubas (grapes) over “ubos”, and itlog (egg) over “iklog”. Learners also complete sentences with fitting describing words, such as “(Mapait, maalat) ang ampalaya”, where the answer is mapait (bitter).

Parts and activities of the module

PartWhat learners do
Subukin (pretest)Match pictures with their names: bola, sapatos, tsokolate, bag, laso
Balikan (review)Write the missing first letter of favorite things, such as aso, manika, mansanas, damit, saging
Tuklasin (discover)Listen to the story “Paborito ni Ina” and answer questions using scrambled letters
Suriin (analyze)Read the reminders about using proper words and choosing healthy food
Pagyamanin (enrichment)Choose the correct name of each pictured food
Isaisip (remember)Learn what “paborito” means
Isagawa (apply)Complete sentences by choosing the right word
Tayahin (assessment)Write the name of each pictured fruit or vegetable
Karagdagang Gawain (extra activity)Draw a box, draw your favorite foods inside it, and say why you like them

How to use this module

  • Learners: Start with the Subukin pretest, then go through each part in order. Write your answers in your notebook or on paper, as each activity tells you.
  • Parents: The Tuklasin part asks the teacher or mother to read the story aloud while the child listens, so plan to read it together. You can also help your child talk about why they like the foods they draw in the last activity.
  • Teachers: The module includes a Susi sa Pagwawasto (answer key) for the Subukin, Balikan, Tuklasin, Pagyamanin, Isagawa, and Tayahin activities. In the printed file the key is shown upside down on the page.
