This is a Self-Learning Module (SLM) for Oral Communication in Context, a Senior High School subject. It is Module 8, titled “Strategies in Various Speech Situations,” and it has one lesson. It helps learners name the different types of speech context, give examples of each, and use them when they communicate.
On this page 7 sections
What learners will learn
After going through this module, learners are expected to:
- identify the various types of speech context;
- use the types of speech context in order to communicate;
- list down a communication situation in different speech contexts; and
- appreciate the importance of understanding the different types of speech context.
Key ideas: communicative competence
The lesson, “Strategies in Various Speech Context,” starts with the sociolinguist Dell Hymes. He linked speech with social relations and described communicative competence as what a speaker needs to know to communicate well in a speech community. In simple terms, it is knowing a language and being able to use it appropriately in any situation.
The module defines oral communication as the process of sending ideas or messages, verbally or nonverbally, within or across contexts, cultures, channels, and media.
Types of speech context
The module explains each type of speech context and gives two examples for each.
| Type | What it means | Example from the module |
|---|---|---|
| Intrapersonal | Communication centered on one person, who is both sender and receiver of the message | Thinking about why your teacher appreciated your early project, and reflecting on it |
| Interpersonal | Communication between and among people that builds personal relationships | See dyad and small group below |
| Dyad (interpersonal) | Communication between two people | Comforting a friend who is feeling down |
| Small group (interpersonal) | At least three but not more than twelve people in face-to-face talk working toward a goal, sharing ideas freely | Discussing with group mates how to finish assigned tasks |
| Public | Delivering a message in front of a group, to inform or persuade | Giving a graduation speech to your batch |
| Mass | Communication through television, radio, newspapers, magazines, books, billboards, the internet, and other media | A student journalist stating a stand on issues in the school paper |
| Organizational | Communication within organizations such as corporations, non-profits, and government bodies, both internal and public-facing | A manager discussing a new project with subordinates |
| Intercultural | Communication among people of different cultures, sharing information skillfully and in a way acceptable to the group’s diverse views | A Chinese politician’s discussion with an American leader |
Other examples in the module include writing one’s thoughts in a journal or diary (intrapersonal), joining a declamation, oratorical, or debate contest (public), and a concert broadcast on the internet, radio, or television (mass).
Parts and activities
The module follows the usual SLM parts:
- What I Know: a five-item true-or-false pretest on speech contexts.
- What’s In: a review of communicative competence and oral communication.
- What’s New: identify the speech context between pairs such as father and son, Filipino and Chinese, or newscaster and field reporter.
- What is It: the discussion of each type of speech context.
- What’s More: fill in the blanks with the correct type of communication.
- What I Have Learned: explain each context (intrapersonal, interpersonal, mass, public, dyad, small group) in two to three sentences using a graphic organizer.
- What I Can Do: write one communication situation for each type in a speech context chart.
- Assessment: a ten-item matching test using a word pool of speech contexts.
- Additional Activities: list real interactions at school, at home, or elsewhere, with the type of speech context and the place. The sample entry is helping a friend solve a math problem at school (interpersonal communication).
How to use this module
- Learners: Answer the pretest first to see what you already know. Read each part in order, and write your answers on a separate sheet of paper, not on the module. Answer keys are included for the pretest and assessment; use them honestly, only after you finish.
- Parents and facilitators: Help your child keep to the order of the parts and check work with the answer key. Encourage them to ask the teacher when a task is unclear.
- Teachers: The module works well with the contextualized textbook you already use. Review the printed answer key before giving it to learners, since a few entries may need checking against the lesson’s definitions.
