Math 1 Quarter 1 Module 8: Comparing Numbers up to 100 and Ordering Them in Increasing or Decreasing Order

This is the Grade 1 Mathematics self-learning module for Quarter 1, Module 8: “Comparing Numbers up to 100 using Relation Symbol and Ordering them in Increasing or Decreasing Order.” It was prepared by DepEd Region II (first edition, 2020) for learners studying at home with a parent or guardian. The module is written in Filipino. By the end, learners can compare numbers from 0 to 100 using the symbols <, > and =, and arrange numbers from least to greatest or greatest to least.

What learners will learn

After this module, learners are expected to:

  • Show, picture, and arrange numbers from 0 to 100 from least to greatest and from greatest to least.
  • Compare numbers from 0 to 100 using symbols, and order them from least to greatest and from greatest to least.

Lessons in this module

  • Aralin 1: Comparing numbers up to 100 using relation symbols (<, >, =). Learners compare groups of objects and pairs of numbers and write the correct symbol between them.
  • Aralin 2: Ordering numbers in increasing or decreasing order. Learners arrange groups of objects and sets of numbers from least to greatest and from greatest to least.

Comparing numbers with <, > and =

The module uses three Filipino words for comparing:

WordMeaningSymbol
mas maramimore, greater>
mas kauntifewer, less<
kaparehothe same, equal=

Lesson 1 opens with a story about Lina, who sorts her fruits into 3 atis (sugar apples), 2 apples, and 3 mangoes. She says there are more atis than apples, and she is right, because 3 is one more than 2. The module then compares each pair:

  • Mangoes and apples: 3 is more than 2, so 3 > 2.
  • Apples and atis: 2 is fewer than 3, so 2 < 3.
  • Mangoes and atis: both have 3, so 3 = 3.

The symbol always goes between the two groups or numbers. Learners first compare pictures (children, books, birds, fruits), then move to two-digit numbers such as 25 and 15, 34 and 43, and 88 and 100. Before the lesson, a short review (Balikan) checks place value, tens (sampuan) and ones (isahan), and asks learners to write numbers such as “30 at 5” (30 and 5) as 35. This place-value review helps learners compare two-digit numbers.

Ordering numbers in increasing or decreasing order

The module explains ordering numbers as arranging them in one of two ways:

  • Increasing order (pinakakaunti hanggang pinakamarami): from least to greatest. Oscar lines up his toys in groups of 3 yo-yos, 4 balls, 5 cars, and 6 airplanes, so the numbers go up like a staircase: 3, 4, 5, 6. Another example is 13, 14, 15, 16.
  • Decreasing order (pinakamarami hanggang pinakakaunti): from greatest to least. Oscar’s sister Rita arranges her toy bells in groups of 8, 6, 4, and 2.

In the practice activities, learners take mixed-up sets and put them in order. For example, Berto’s dog houses are numbered 10, 30, 50, and 40. In increasing order they read 10, 30, 40, 50. In decreasing order they read 50, 40, 30, 10. Later items use larger numbers such as 18, 22, 10, 30 and 69, 63, 66.

How to use this module

Each lesson follows the same order of parts: Balikan (review), Tuklasin (a short story with questions to answer aloud), Suriin (explanation), Pagyamanin (practice), Isaisip (key ideas to remember), Isagawa (application), Tayahin (assessment), and Karagdagang Gawain (additional activity). The module starts with Subukin, a pretest that shows how much the learner already knows, and ends with an answer key (Susi sa Pagwawasto).

  • Learners: Do the parts in order. Write your answers on a separate sheet of paper, not on the module, so other learners can use it too. Ask your teacher right away if a lesson is hard to understand.
  • Parents and guardians: Read the Tuklasin stories with your child and ask the questions aloud, as the module suggests. Real objects at home, such as fruits or toys, make comparing and ordering easier to practice. Use the answer key honestly to check the work.
  • Teachers: The pretest shows which learners need more help. The Tayahin at the end of each lesson measures what they learned. Check the answer key against the items before sharing it, since some printed answers are hard to match to their activities.

Si Lina ay mahilig kumain ng prutas kaya binilhan siya ng kanyang nanay at pinangkat niya ito.

[illustration: three atis, two apples, and three mangoes, with the counts 3, 2, and 3 printed below each group]

Sabi niya, “mas marami ang atis kaysa sa mansanas”. Tama ba?

Mga katanungan:

a. Ilang atis ang meron? b. Ilan lahat ang mansanas? c. Ilan ang mangga? d. Ano ang naibibigay sa atin ang prutas pag kumakain tayo nito araw-araw? e. Sa sinabi ni Lina na mas marami ang atis sa mansanas, tama ba siya?

Tama si Lina dahil mas marami ng isa ang bilang ng atis kaysa sa mansanas.

Suriin

Balikan natin ang pinangkat ni Lina na prutas.

[illustration: three atis, two apples, and three mangoes, with the counts 3, 2, and 3 printed below each group]

Tignan ang larawan ng mangga at ang mansanas. Ilan ang mangga? Tatlo (3) Ilan ang Mansanas? Dalawa (2)

[illustration: three mangoes and two apples, with the counts 3 and 2 printed below each group]

Kapag pinaghambing natin ang bilang ng dalawang prutas, ang mangga ay mas marami kaysa sa mansanas. Ang simbolo ng mas marami ay ( > ). Ilagay ang simbolo sa pagitan ng mangga at mansanas.

[chart: comparison of three mangoes and two apples; symbol between groups]

3 > 2

Paghambingin naman natin ang mansanas at ang atis.

Ilan ang mansanas? Dalawa (2)

Ilan ang atis? Tatlo (3)

Ano ang napapansin ninyo sa bilang ng mansanas at atis?

Ang mansanas ay mas kaunti kaysa sa atis. Ang simbolo ng mas kaunti ay (<) at ilagay ito sa pagitan ng mansanas at atis.

[chart: comparison of two apples and three atis; symbol between groups]

2 < 3

Tingnan naman natin ang mangga at ang atis.

Ang mangga ay may bilang na _______.

Ang atis ay mayroong ________.

Ibig sabihin magkapareho ang bilang ng dalawang prutas. Kaya ang mangga ay kapareho ng atis. Ang simbolo ng kapareho ay (=) at ilagay din ito sa pagitan ng dalawang klase ng prutas.
