MAPEH Arts 6 Quarter 2 Module 1: Digital Painting

Grade 6 MAPEH Arts Quarter 2 Module 1 teaches what digital painting is, its advantages, and how art elements and principles still apply with technology.

This is the Grade 6 MAPEH (Arts) Self-Learning Module for Quarter 2, Module 1: Digital Painting. It is an Alternative Delivery Mode module (First Edition, 2020) from DepEd Region VI – Western Visayas, written for learners studying at home with the help of a parent or facilitator. After the module, learners should see that the processes, elements, and principles of art still apply when artists paint with computers and other technology.

On this page 6 sections

What learners will learn

The module has one learning objective. After going through it, the learner is expected to:

  • Realize that art processes, elements, and principles still apply even with the use of technologies.

What is digital painting?

The module explains that painting is the practice of applying paint, pigment, color, or another medium to a surface, usually with a brush. Digital painting is a newer art form. It applies traditional techniques such as watercolor, oils, acrylic, and impasto using digital tools: a computer, a digitizing tablet and stylus, and painting software. The software uses a paint brush much like traditional painting does.

The computer does not paint for the artist. It is a tool that helps artists build their skills and creativity.

Elements and principles still apply

The key idea of the lesson is that digital and traditional painting share the same art basics. Only the materials, the tools, and the way the artwork is painted are different.

Elements of artPrinciples of art
Color, form, line, shape, space, textureScale, proportion, unity, variety, rhythm, mass, space

The module adds that digital paintings often have a highly defined, bold look with sharp forms, perfectly smooth gradients, and a more realistic appearance.

Advantages of painting with computers

The module lists these advantages:

  • Mistakes and errors are easier to correct.
  • The work area is less messy and more organized.
  • Colors do not fade, and brushes never get worn out.
  • Earlier stages and versions can be opened again at any time.
  • Work can be transferred and printed.
  • Works are easier to share and reproduce for interested clients.
  • Works are easier to duplicate.
  • It costs less, because the artist does not need to buy new art materials when supplies run out.

Activities in the module

  • What I Know (pretest): In a “Fact or Bluff” quiz, learners look at 10 pictures, such as a desktop computer, crayons, paintbrushes, a scanner, and an eraser. They write FACT if the picture shows technology and BLUFF if it does not.
  • What’s In: Learners draw a cartoon character of themselves feeling happy, shocked, angry, cool, and sleepy. Then they think about whether technology could be used to make it.
  • What’s New: Learners compare a traditional acrylic painting of a hibiscus flower with a digital painting of the same flower. They choose the features both pictures share from a box of words.
  • Check-up questions: Five questions about the lesson, including what technology is used in digital painting and what its advantages are.
  • What’s More: Learners study two landscape paintings, tell which one is traditional and which one is digital, and say what the two have in common.
  • What I Can Do: Learners compare Vincent van Gogh’s oil-on-canvas self-portrait with a state-of-the-art digital painting based on it.
  • Assessment: Learners describe two digital paintings in terms of color, line, shape, and texture. They also say whether these features are found in traditional paintings too.
  • Additional Activities: Learners find one digital painting and one traditional painting, paste them on bond paper, and write a short description of how the two are alike.

How to use this module

For learners: Answer the pretest first to see what you already know. Then work through the parts in order. Write your answers on a separate sheet of paper or in your notebook, not on the module. An answer key is included for the pretest and several activities. Use it honestly to check your work after you answer, not before. Many answers, including the assessment, will be your own ideas, so the key says “answers may vary.”

For parents and facilitators: The Notes to the Parent Teacher/Facilitator ask you to show your child pictures found at home, other available materials, or examples from the internet. This helps the child understand the lesson. Check your child’s progress closely.

For teachers: This short, single-lesson module fits a Quarter 2 Arts lesson on digital art. The traditional-versus-digital comparisons and the bond-paper research task can serve as outputs for learners to submit.

What is It

What is digital painting?

Painting is a well-known art form since beginning of time and until now. But nowadays, the traditional form of painting comes to a new form of art – the Digital Painting. The perennial change in painting has now utilized the use of digital software and tools to create artworks. The creation of digital painting relies heavily on the use of computer and painting software which use paint brush much like traditional painting. Because of the inclusion of computers or technology to painting, every goals of painting becomes easier to achieve. Furthermore, computers allow the artist to enhance their skills and creativity in painting. Though computers do not really paint for you more than paint brushes do, this digital tool offers you technologies that have become vital in the field of arts. Computers also offer a lot of advantages in painting. These are as follows:

  • Mistakes and errors are much easier to correct.
  • Less messy and more organized work environment.
  • Colors do not fade and brushes will never be shabby.
  • Stages and versions can be accessed and retrieved any time.
  • Transferable and printable.
  • Easier distribution and reproduction of works to interested clients/parties.
  • Easier duplication of works (ideal for working with clients)
  • Less costly since one does not need to buy art materials when they ran out.

Painting is the practice of applying paint, pigment, color or other medium to a surface. The application of the medium is commonly applied to the base with brush but other object may be used. While Digital painting is an emerging art form in which traditional painting techniques such as water color, oils, acrylic, impasto etc. are applied using digital tools by means of a computer, a digitizing tablet and stylus and software. Digital painting process is also likely the same as traditional painting, elements of arts such as color, form, line, shape, space and texture are still used together with the principles of art like scale, proportion, unity, variety, rhythm, mass and space, minus the materials, tools and how the artwork to be paint. Digitally painted arts are highly defined, bold appearance and sharp forms images. Its gradient is perfectly smooth and it is more realistic.
