This is the Music 5 self-learning module for Quarter 3 (Ikatlong Markahan), Module 1: “Mga Anyo ng Musika” (forms of music). It is an Alternative Delivery Mode module from DepEd Region VIII, written in Filipino for Grade 5 learners studying at home. After working through it, learners should be able to tell a unitary song from a strophic song, sing both kinds, and appreciate them.
On this page 7 sections
What learners will learn
The module covers the competency of learning the different forms of music (MU5FO-IIIa-1). By the end of the module, learners are expected to:
- Identify different forms of music, such as unitary and strophic.
- Sing unitary and strophic songs.
- Appreciate unitary and strophic songs.
The module explains that musical form (anyo) is the element of music that focuses on the design and structure of a song.
Key terms to review first
The review part (Balikan) asks learners to recall earlier music terms. The answer key gives these:
- Ritmo (rhythm): gives order or shape to the flow of music, for example clapping hands, stamping feet, or snapping fingers.
- Parirala (phrase): a group of tones that gives one musical idea.
- Berso (verse): the number of stanzas or lines in a song.
- Motive: the smallest idea in music.
The module uses “Bahay Kubo” to show a phrase, a verse, and a motive.
Unitary and strophic forms
The main lesson (Suriin) says music has two simple forms.
Unitary
A unitary song has only one verse, and that verse is not sung again. Short songs and nursery rhymes are often unitary. The module’s example is “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star.” In the Isagawa activity, the answer key also treats “Row Your Boat” as unitary.
Strophic
A strophic song has one melody that repeats for every verse of the song. Even when the lyrics change, the melody stays the same throughout. The module’s example is “Leron Leron Sinta.” The answer keys also name “Silent Night” and “You Are My Sunshine” as strophic, since both have several verses sung to the same tune.
| Form | Verses | Melody | Examples in the module |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unitary | One verse, not repeated | Sung once | Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star; Row Your Boat |
| Strophic | Two or more verses | Same melody for every verse | Leron Leron Sinta; Silent Night; You Are My Sunshine |
A simple test: count the verses. If the song has one verse sung once, it is unitary. If it has several verses with new words but the same tune, it is strophic.
Parts and activities of the module
- Alamin: the learning objectives.
- Subukin: an 8-item pretest with multiple-choice and true-or-false questions.
- Balikan: a review of rhythm, phrase, verse, motive, and tone.
- Tuklasin: learners sing “Bahay Kubo” while clapping its rhythm, then count its phrases and verses.
- Suriin: the lesson on unitary and strophic forms.
- Pagyamanin: Gawain 1 asks learners to name the form of “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” and “Paruparong Bukid”; Gawain 2 asks them to sing “Silent Night” and answer questions about it; Gawain 3 asks how they value these songs by choosing a heart, a smiling face, or a thumbs-up.
- Isaisip: learners complete the sentence “Ang natutunan ko sa modyul na ito ay…” (what I learned in this module is…).
- Isagawa: questions comparing “Row Your Boat” and “You Are My Sunshine.”
- Tayahin: the final test. Learners mark five songs U (unitary) or S (strophic), then sing one of “Sitsiritsit Alibangbang,” “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star,” or “B-I-N-G-O” and name its form.
- Karagdagang Gawain: learners list other unitary and strophic songs.
- Susi sa Pagwawasto: the answer key.
How to use this module
Learners: Take the pretest first, then go through the parts in order. Sing the songs out loud, because the activities ask you to listen for repeated melodies. Write your answers on a separate sheet of paper, not on the module, so others can use it. Use the answer key honestly, and ask your teacher if a lesson is unclear.
Parents and guardians: Help your child sing the songs and count the verses together. The pretest shows whether your child needs extra help.
Teachers: Check the answer key before releasing it to learners. Some answers do not match the lesson. For example, the Tayahin key marks “Leron Leron Sinta” as unitary, but the lesson presents it as strophic. Also, the pretest key marks “Twinkle Twinkle is unitary” as false, but the lesson calls it unitary.

Music Ikatlong Markahan – Modyul 1: Mga Anyo ng Musika
Paunang Salita

Halimbawa: Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star

Up a -bove the world so high Like a dia–mon in the sky
Twin -kle Twin -kle lit -tle star How I won -der what you are
Isa pang simpleng anyo ng musika ay ang strophic. Ang isang awitin o musika ay maituturing na may anyong strophic kung ito ay mayroong iisang melodiya na paulit-ulit sa bawat berso ng buong awit. Kahit magbago ang mga titik ng awit, ang melodiya nito ay mananatiling pareho lamang sa buong awit.
