Empowerment Technologies Quarter 1 Module 4.1: Applied Productivity Tools using Word Processor

This is the Empowerment Technologies Quarter 1 Module 4.1 self-learning module, Applied Productivity Tools using Word Processor, for Senior High School learners. It is the First Edition, 2020, Alternative Delivery Mode module from DepEd National Capital Region. After working through it, learners can format a document and add headers, footers, page numbers, and an automatic table of contents in a word processor.

What learners will learn

The module covers two learning competencies:

  • Uses common productivity tools effectively by maximizing advanced application techniques (CS_ICT11/12-ICTPT-Ic-d-4)
  • Creates an original or derivative ICT content to effectively communicate or present data or information related to specific professional tracks (CS_ICT11/12-ICTPT-Ic-d-5)

By the end of the module, learners are expected to:

  1. define the word processor;
  2. discuss the basic and advanced functions of a word processor;
  3. demonstrate common productivity tools in word processor techniques; and
  4. construct and execute different advanced functions by applying word processor techniques.

Lesson in this module

The module has one lesson, Working with Word Processor. It explains what a word processor is, then walks learners step by step through double spacing, inserting a header and footer, adding page numbers, and creating a table of contents.

What is a word processor?

The module defines a word processor as a computer program or device that handles the input, editing, formatting, and output of text, often with extra features. Early word processors were stand-alone devices. Today they are programs that run on general-purpose computers. Microsoft Word is an example of word processing software, and the module describes a word processor as document software.

The activities use Microsoft Word. The Notes to the Teacher say other programs such as Google Slides, Open Office, and Libre Office can also be used, with minor changes to the steps.

Key word processor skills, step by step

Double spacing

Highlight the text, then go to Home > Paragraph > Indents and Spacing > Spacing > Line Spacing > choose Double > OK.

  1. Open the word processor.
  2. Click Insert, then go to the Header & Footer group.
  3. Choose a header or footer style, such as Blank, Blank (Three Columns), Austin, or Banded.

The header is the upper part of the document. To change the font style, size, or color of the header or footer text, select it and use the Home ribbon.

Inserting a page number

  1. In the same Header & Footer area, select Page Number.
  2. Choose the format and style you want, such as Simple or Page X.

Creating a table of contents

  1. Create a new document named “Table of Contents” and type the list of units and topics given in the module (for example, Unit 1, ICT and its Current State, Netiquettes, Unit 2, Word Processor, Spreadsheet).
  2. Apply heading styles before creating the table of contents: Heading 1 for the unit titles and Heading 2 for the topics. Go to Home > Styles group > Heading 1 or Heading 2.
  3. Click at the beginning of the document to place the insertion point.
  4. Go to References > Table of Contents group > Automatic Table 2.

To edit a page number in the table of contents, highlight the number and type the new one. Page numbers help readers find the page where a topic is located.

Activities in the module

  • What I Know: a 15-item multiple-choice pretest.
  • What’s New: write an autobiography of up to 200 words in Times New Roman, 12-point font, double spaced.
  • What’s More (Activity 1.1): build a table of contents for an Empowerment Technologies book, using Units 1 to 6 listed in the module.
  • What I Have Learned: explain the advantages of headers, footers, and page numbers, and when a table of contents is useful in daily life.
  • What I Can Do: write the steps for creating a table of contents and for inserting a page number.
  • Assessment: a 15-item multiple-choice post-test.
  • Additional Activities: write at least three sentences each describing the header, footer, page number, and table of contents.

How to use this module

Learners: Start with the pretest to see what you already know. Then go through the parts in order, trying each step on a computer if you can. Write your answers on a separate sheet of paper, not on the module, and take the post-test at the end. Answer keys for the pretest and assessment are included; use them honestly to check your work.

Parents: Help your child find time on a computer with a word processor so they can practice the steps. If your child has trouble with a task, encourage them to ask their teacher.

Teachers: The answer key is on the last pages. Check item 11 of the pretest (What I Know): the key lists A (Presentation), but the lesson identifies Microsoft Word as word processing software, which is choice D.
