TLE Carpentry 7/8 Module 1: Identifying Materials and Tools for a Task

This is Module 1 of the Technology and Livelihood Education (TLE) Exploratory Course in Carpentry for Grades 7 and 8. Its single lesson, “Identifying Materials and Tools for a Task,” introduces the basic tools and materials a carpenter uses to build furniture or a house. By the end, learners can describe these tools and materials and prepare them for a carpentry task.

What learners will learn

After going through this module, learners are expected to:

  • Describe tools and materials used in carpentry
  • Prepare tools and materials for a task

Competency code: TLE_IACP7/8UT-0a-1

Tools and materials in carpentry

The module separates materials, which become parts of a project, from tools, which you handle to do the work. Here are the descriptions the module gives.

Materials

MaterialDescription or use
SandFine, gritty substance found on the shore and in the desert
PlywoodThin, cross-laminated sheet of wood
GravelCoarse aggregate of hard material mixed with cement to form concrete
LumberWooden boards or logs that have been sawn
NailsMetal pieces used for fastening wood
CementPowder that binds aggregate when mixed with water
WaterAdded to the mixture of cement and aggregate
Reinforcing steel barAdds strength to construction work
Corrugated galvanized iron sheetUsed for roofing

Tools

ToolUse
Plumb bobChecks vertical alignment
Try squareTests the squareness of a stock
HacksawFine-toothed saw for cutting metal and pipes
Level bar (spirit level)Checks vertical and horizontal position
Pull-push ruleMeasures long distances
Claw hammerDrives and pulls out nails
ShovelMixes aggregate, cement, and water
Cross-cut sawCuts wood across the grain
RipsawCuts wood along the grain
TwisterTightens tie wire
Combination pliersCut tie wires

A simple way to remember the two saws: the ripsaw cuts along the grain, and the cross-cut saw cuts across it.

Preparing tools and materials for a task

The module gives three main steps before any carpentry job.

  1. Identify materials. List the materials and tools the job needs, describe them, and count them according to the job requirements.
  2. Secure a requisition of materials. Request the items on your list, follow the standard operating procedures (SOP), and use substitutes only if they do not sacrifice cost or quality.
  3. Receive and inspect materials. Check the items against the numbers and specifications, look for damage, and place them near the workplace.

Filling out a requisition form

  1. Write the name of the project and the date of the request.
  2. Fill in the project’s classification and purpose.
  3. Write the number of materials needed.
  4. List the unit of each material.
  5. List the materials with their description.
  6. Write the cost per unit and the total cost.
  7. Sign your name as the requisitioner.
  8. Get the approval of the people in charge.

Inspecting and storing what you receive

  • Check that quantity and specifications are complete (number of pieces, length, width).
  • Check each tool’s condition: parts complete, cutting edges and teeth undamaged.
  • Make sure no accessories are missing.
  • Report missing or defective items right away to the supply officer or teacher, and get replacements.
  • Sign the requisition form when you receive the items.
  • Store items in a safe area near your workplace, with bulky and heavy items at the bottom and light, small items on top.
  • Handle tools carefully. Do not drop them, and keep them out of sun and rain.

How to use this module

The module follows the usual self-learning module parts: a 15-item pretest (What I Know), the lesson, activities, a 15-item assessment, additional activities, and an answer key. Write all answers on a separate activity sheet, not on the module.

The activities are:

  • Activity 1: Supply Me! Fill in missing letters to form carpentry words.
  • Activity 2: Check Me! Classify ten items as tools or materials.
  • Activity 3: Search Me in the Puzzle! Find ten tools and materials in a word search.
  • Activity 4: Describe Me! Write the uses of ten tools and materials.
  • Activity 5: Draw Me, car-PAINTER! Draw five tools and materials you learned.
  • Additional Activities: Draw tools and materials and write their uses.

Learners: Take the pretest first, study the lesson, do the activities in order, then answer the assessment. Use the answer key honestly to check your work.

Parents: The module asks you to supervise or monitor your child while they work through it at home.

Teachers: The Notes to the Teacher ask you to guide learners to finish tasks in the allotted time. Before using the pretest key, compare it with the lesson’s definitions; for example, items 3 (plumb) and 8 (level) in the key do not match the vertical and horizontal definitions in the lesson.
