This is the Grade 10 Technology and Livelihood Education (TLE) self-learning module for ICT-Technical Drafting (Technical Drafting NC II), Quarter 1, Module 1: Operate CAD Software and Computer Hardware (Identifying CAD software features). It is meant for Week 1 of the quarter and was developed by DepEd Cordillera Administrative Region for home-based learning. Learners will be able to tell the main types of CAD software apart, name popular CAD programs and their makers, and design a logo for a CAD program.
What learners will learn
Learning competency (TLE_ICTTD9-12CA-Ia-b-1): LO 1. Operate CAD software and computer hardware, 1.1 Identify CAD software features according to the software provider.
After going through the module, learners are expected to:
- identify the different CAD software according to software provider;
- design a CAD logo that shows innovation; and
- develop traits such as ingenuity, resourcefulness, creativity, independence, and passion for learning.
What is computer-aided design (CAD)?
Computer-aided design (CAD), also called computer-aided drafting and design (CADD), is the use of computer systems to help create, change, and analyze a design. It is the process of making technical drawings with software. The module explains that CAD is used to:
- increase productivity;
- improve the quality of a design; and
- create a database for manufacturing.
CAD can draw curves and figures in two-dimensional (2D) space, or curves, surfaces, and solids in three-dimensional (3D) space. It is used in the automotive, shipbuilding, and aerospace industries, in industrial and architectural design, in prosthetics, and to make computer animation for movies, advertising, and technical manuals. The module also notes that CAD has largely replaced manual drafting for engineers, architects, and construction managers.
Types of CAD software
The module gives this broad classification:
| Type | What it does |
|---|---|
| 2D CAD | Designs in two dimensions; no perspective or scale. Used for sketching and drafting conceptual designs, floor plans, building permit drawings, and building inspection planning. |
| 3D CAD | Designs 3D objects through solid modeling, with length, width, and height, for more accurate scaling and visualization. |
| 3D wireframe and surface modelling | Used for illustrations, architectural renderings, and 3D animation for games and presentations. |
| Solid modelling | The most complicated CAD technology. It simulates an object inside and out, so models can be cut open (sectioned) and stress tested like real objects. |
| Single-file-mode systems | Only one user works on one file at a time. |
| Referenced-file-mode systems | Users work on their own files with other users’ files attached as a background. |
| Collaborative-mode systems | A team works on each other’s data and sees changes as they happen. |
CAD programs and their makers
The module describes several well-known programs:
- ArchiCAD: made by Graphic Soft; focuses on architectural design that stays practical.
- AutoCAD: developed and marketed by Autodesk Inc.; used for 2D and 3D design and drafting, and one of the first CAD programs that ran on personal computers. Its commands include lines, polylines, circles, splines, fillets, cross-hatching, text, and dimensions.
- Autodesk Maya: Autodesk’s 3D animation software for animation, modeling, simulation, and rendering of high-quality 3D characters and scenes.
- Autodesk 3DS Max: 3D software for animation, modeling, simulation, and rendering, used mainly in the film industry.
- Alibre Design: 3D mechanical design and fabrication software for modeling custom parts that can be 3D printed.
- Autodesk Alias: industrial design software for surface modeling in industrial, product, and automotive design.
- Autodesk Revit: building and construction software that specializes in BIM (Building Information Modeling) for architectural, MEP, and structural designs.
- Bentley MicroStation: made for the architecture, engineering, construction, and operation of utility systems, roads and rail, bridges, and buildings.
The activities also mention SketchUp (a free 3D CAD modeler by Google), DraftSight (a free AutoCAD alternative that can read DWG files), Catia, Rhino, SolidWorks, Kompas 3D, and LightWave.
Activities in the module
- What I Know: a 15-item multiple-choice pretest.
- What’s In: a house drawing that asks whether you would draft it by hand or with CAD.
- What’s New (Picture Equation): combine two pictures to name a familiar software, such as Google Drive or SketchUp.
- What’s More (Perfect Partners): match 10 descriptions to CAD programs.
- What I Have Learned (Blockbuster): name the concept from its first letter.
- What I Can Do (My CAD Logo): create an original logo for one of the CAD programs discussed, without copying existing logos. It is scored on logo, craftsmanship, creativity and originality, design, and use of time.
- Post-Assessment: a 15-item multiple-choice test.
- Additional Activity (Fill-in the Gaps): complete a paragraph that describes CAD.
How to use this module
- Learners: Answer What I Know before the other parts, then work through each section in order. Write all answers on a separate sheet, finish one task before the next, check your work honestly with the answer key, and return the module to your teacher when done.
- Parents and guardians: Help your child keep the module clean and remind them to use separate sheets. Make sure they finish the logo task, which is graded by a rubric.
- Teachers and facilitators: Orient learners on how to use the module and track their progress. Before checking papers, compare the answer key with the discussion: a few multiple-choice keys do not match what the lesson teaches (for example, 2D CAD is the type for conceptual sketches, and 3D CAD is the type with length, width, and height).

What Is It
What is Computer Aided Design?
Computer-aided design (CAD), also known as computer-aided drafting and design (CADD), is the use of computer systems to assist in the creation, modification, and analysis of a design. It describes the process of creating technical drawings with the use of computer software. CAD software is used to increase the productivity, to improve the quality of design, and to create a database for manufacturing.
[photo: laptop with a CAD design on screen, with gears, drafting scales and calipers in front]
Computer-aided design (CAD) may be used to design curves and figures in two-dimensional (2D) space; or curves, surfaces, and solids in three-dimensional (3D) space. CAD is an important industrial art extensively used in many applications, including automotive, shipbuilding, and aerospace industries; industrial and architectural design; prosthetics; and many more. CAD is also widely used to produce computer animation for special effects in movies, advertising, and technical manuals.
Types of CAD Software
Since its introduction in late 1960’s, CAD software has improved by leaps and bounds. A broad classification of CAD is:
- 2D CAD
-2D CAD software offers a platform to design in two dimensions. Since 2D CAD does not allow for the creation of perspectives or scale, it is often used for drawing, sketching, and drafting conceptual designs. 2D CAD is used for floor plan development, building permit drawing, and building inspection planning.
[illustration: plan view drawing of four circular seats around a central ring] Example of 2D drawing
- 3D CAD
-3D CAD provides a platform for designing 3D objects. The main feature of this type of CAD software is 3D solid modeling. This lets designers create objects with length, width, and height, allowing more accurate scaling and visualization.
[illustration: perspective drawing of a two-storey house with a pitched roof] Example of 3D drawing
- 3D Wireframe and Surface Modelling
-Surface modeling is widely used in CAD (computer-aided design) for illustrations and architectural renderings. It is also used in 3D animation for games and other presentations.
[illustration: wireframe mesh of a mask] A 3D mask wireframe
- Solid Modelling
- is the most complicated of the CAD technologies, because it simulates an object internally and externally. Solid models can be sectioned (cut open) to reveal their internal features, and they can be stress tested as if they were physical entities in the real world.
[illustration: grey 3D solid model of a sports car] A solid modeling example in AutoCAD
Single-file-mode systems – This type of CAD software allows only a single user to work on a single file at a time.
Referenced-file-mode systems – In this type of CAD software, users can work on their own files with the files of other users attached as a background. This enables users to leverage other users’ work as background data.
Collaborative-mode systems – These CAD systems take the referenced-mode system to the next level. They allow a team of users to collaboratively work with each other’s data and see the changes other users make to the data as they go. And of course, the giants in this field (for example AutoCAD) can be used in different modes of operation.
Below is the example of different types of CAD software.
| CAD Software | Descriptions |
|---|---|
| ArchiCAD | • created by the company Graphic Soft. • focuses on creating designs for Architecture. • developed specifically to address architect’s desire for greatdesign without compromising on practicality |
