This is the Grade 10 Technology and Livelihood Education (TLE) self-learning module for ICT-Technical Drafting (Technical Drafting NC II), Quarter 1, Module 2: Operate CAD Software and Computer Hardware (Exploring CAD Working Environment). It is meant for Week 2 of the first quarter. It introduces learners to the AutoCAD 2017 screen, explains what each part does, and ends with a storyboard task about those parts.
What learners will learn
The module covers the learning competency LO 1, Operate CAD software and computer hardware, under 1.2 Explore CAD working environment (competency code TLE_ICTTD9-12CA-Ia-b-1).
After going through the module, learners are expected to:
- identify the parts of the AutoCAD working environment and their functions;
- create a storyboard of the different parts of the AutoCAD working environment; and
- develop traits such as ingenuity, resourcefulness, creativity, independence, and passion for learning.
A short history of AutoCAD
The “What’s New” part, “Story Time,” is a reading on the history of AutoCAD by Luke Kennedy. Key facts from it:
- AutoCAD has been on the market since 1982. It was the first CAD system made for personal computers.
- Autodesk, the company behind AutoCAD, was founded in 1982 by John Walker and 15 co-founders.
- AutoCAD was launched at the COMDEX trade show in Las Vegas.
- By March 1986, AutoCAD had become the most widely used design application in the world.
- Autodesk later released versions for specific fields, such as AutoCAD Architecture, AutoCAD Electrical, and AutoCAD Civil 3D. It also made mobile and cloud-based apps such as AutoCAD 360, Fusion 360, and A360 Viewer.
Getting and starting AutoCAD
Learners with internet access and a computer can follow the module’s 19 illustrated steps to get a free education license of AutoCAD 2021 from Autodesk. The main steps are:
- Create an Autodesk account.
- Verify the account by email.
- Set up an education profile with your school details.
- Upload your school ID as proof of enrollment.
- Install the software after Autodesk approves your education access.
The module gives three ways to start AutoCAD:
- Open it from the Start menu (Windows icon).
- Double-click the AutoCAD icon on the desktop.
- Double-click a drawing file in a folder on your computer.
Parts of the AutoCAD 2017 working environment
The main lesson (“What Is It”) describes 17 parts of the screen.
| Part | What it does |
|---|---|
| Menu Browser | Opens the classic drop-down menus and lets you search menus and commands. It also shows recent and open documents. |
| File Name | Shows the name of the file you are working on, for example Drawing1.dwg |
| Quick Access Toolbar | Sits at the top of the window, above the ribbon. Gives direct access to common commands. |
| Search box | Finds information by keyword or phrase. Also opens the Communication Center and Favorites panels. |
| Menu Bar | The horizontal strip of tabs across the top, such as Home, Insert, Annotate, and View |
| Toolbar/Ribbon | Holds the tools for the current workspace in one compact place |
| User Coordinate System (UCS) | The icon at the bottom-left corner of the drawing window |
| World Coordinate System (WCS) | The default system for a new drawing. It marks the (0,0,0) point. |
| Draw commands | Create new objects such as lines and circles |
| Modify Toolbar | Changes existing drawing objects to suit what you need |
| View Port/View Control | Appears at the top-left of each viewport. Changes views, visual styles, and other settings. |
| Layout Tab | Gives access to Model Space and each layout |
| Navigation Bar | Holds the navigation tools, such as pan, zoom, and orbit |
| Status Bar | Shows cursor location, drawing tools, and settings that affect the drawing environment |
| Workspace Switching | Changes to another workspace, such as Drafting & Annotation, 3D Basics, or 3D Modeling |
| Crosshair | The cursor made of two crossing lines. Use it to locate points and select objects. |
| Command Line Bar | Where you type commands and read prompts. It also lists your previous commands. |
The tests also check two basic facts. AutoCAD drawings use the .dwg file format, and you can save a drawing by pressing Ctrl + S.
How to use this module
The module follows the usual SLM parts:
- What I Know: a 15-item multiple-choice pretest.
- What’s In: a five-item review of Module 1 on CAD types and software modes.
- What’s New: the AutoCAD history reading with three questions.
- What Is It: the main lesson on getting AutoCAD and on the parts of the screen.
- What’s More: “Missing Names,” where you label 10 parts of the AutoCAD screen.
- What I Have Learned: “#Hash Tag Mo,” a fill-in-the-blanks exercise. You write each answer with a hashtag symbol (#).
- What I Can Do: a storyboard task.
- Assessment: a 15-item post-test.
- Additional Activity: a crossword puzzle.
The storyboard task asks you to create a conversational comic strip about the parts of the AutoCAD working environment. You can draw your own strip or use the six-panel template in the module. It is scored on four criteria: content, presentation, organization, and originality and creativity. Each criterion is rated 10 (excellent), 8 (good), or 5 (satisfactory).
- Learners: Answer the pretest first and finish each task before moving on. Write all answers on a separate sheet, check them honestly against the answer key, and return the module to your teacher when you are done.
- Parents and guardians: The module’s facilitator notes name you as your child’s main support at home. Remind your child to use separate sheets of paper and not to write on the module.
- Teachers: Orient learners on how to use the module and track their progress. Use the rubric to grade the storyboard output.

STORY TIME
Read the brief history of AutoCAD by Luke Kennedy and answer the questions below:
AutoCAD has been available on the market since 1982, making it the first CAD system developed for PCs. This means that AutoCAD has been around longer than Adobe Photoshop or even Microsoft Windows! Before AutoCAD, commercial CAD programs in the 70s ran on mainframe computers or minicomputers, with each user working at a separate graphics terminal. If the designer didn’t have access to these, they’d go about drawing using an old-school drafting desk and a T-square.
The company behind AutoCAD, Autodesk was founded in 1982 by John Walker. He and the other 15 co-founders intended to develop five different desktop automation applications, hoping that one of the applications would take off. Their flagship product turned out to be AutoCAD. They launched AutoCAD at the COMDEX trade show in Las Vegas as the first CAD program in the world to run on a PC. By March 1986, only four years after it was introduced, AutoCAD had become the most widely used design application worldwide, a position it still holds today. In its 35 years, AutoCAD has grown substantially. In fact, there has been 31 versions since the first release in December 1982! Over the years, Autodesk added new features and programs to appeal to different professions. The software supports APIs for customization and automation, which enabled the creation of vertical products such as AutoCAD Architecture, AutoCAD Electrical and AutoCAD Civil 3D. In the last five years, Autodesk has also created mobile and cloud-based apps, including AutoCAD 360, Fusion 360, and A360 Viewer. These programs couple design and documentation tools together with the ability to share and collaborate via the Internet.
