This is the Grade 10 Technology and Livelihood Education (TLE) self-learning module for Dressmaking NC II, Quarter 1, Module 6: Prepare Cut Parts, Assemble and Sew Ladies Skirt. It was made for home-based learning under the Alternative Delivery Mode by DepEd Cordillera Administrative Region and is set for Week 6 of the first quarter. Learners will be able to identify the cut parts of a ladies skirt and sew an A-line skirt with a back zipper and waistband, step by step.
What learners will learn
The module covers this competency (code TLE_HEDM9-12SK-Ie -1-3):
- LO 3. Assemble garment parts for ladies skirt
- 3.1 Prepare cut parts
- 3.2 Assemble and sew ladies skirt
After the module, learners are expected to:
- identify the cut parts for assembling and sewing a ladies skirt;
- follow the steps in assembling and sewing a ladies skirt;
- perform the correct steps in assembling and sewing a ladies skirt; and
- develop traits such as ingenuity, resourcefulness, creativity, independence, and passion for learning.
Sewing and assembling: the basic ideas
The module separates two ideas:
- Sewing combines machine and hand stitches. Machine stitching is used for the major seams. Hand stitching is mainly used for temporary stitches (basting) and for finishing the garment.
- Assembling is joining the cut pieces of fabric together by basting or pinning before machine stitching.
The cut parts of the A-line skirt are the front part, the back part, the waistband, and the zipper.
Sewing terms to know
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Stay stitching | Stitching along bias and curved edges to keep the fabric from stretching |
| Backstitching | Secures the ends of a row of stitching |
| Topstitching | A row of stitching on the outside of a garment |
| Edge stitching | Topstitching very close to the finished edge |
| Stitch-in-the-ditch | Stitching on the outside of a garment, in the groove of a seamline |
| Hem | Turning the raw edge under, as on the lower edge of a skirt, pants, sleeves, and blouses |
| Placket | A finished opening that makes the garment easy to put on and take off |
| Seam | The joining of two or more pieces of fabric to form a garment |
| Baste | A temporary hand stitch made before final sewing |
| Seam allowance | The space between the cut edge of the fabric and the stitching line |
| Waistband | A band around the waistline at the top of a skirt or pants |
| Slash | A cut through the center fold of a dart or curved part |
| Trim | Cutting off ragged edges or part of a seam allowance to reduce bulk |
| Fasteners | Items that hold a garment opening closed, for ease in putting on and off |
Steps in sewing an A-line skirt with a back zipper
The module walks through 14 steps, each shown with photos:
- Prepare the cut pieces of fabric.
- Pin and baste all the darts on the front and back, then sew them.
- Prepare an 8-inch zipper for the back opening.
- Join the center back, leaving 8 inches open for the zipper, then sew.
- Attach the zipper to the left side of the back part with at least a ½-inch overlap, and 1/16 inch on the right side. The finished zipper is left over right.
- Join the front and back sides of the skirt, then edge stitch.
- Edge stitch the bottom circumference of the skirt.
- Prepare the waistband: 2 inches wide at the center fold, with allowance, and as long as the waist measurement plus 3 inches (for a 1½-inch finished waistband).
- Attach ½ inch of one side of the waistband to the skirt waistline, then sew.
- Slash the inside seam of the waistband.
- Close both ends of the waistband, wrong sides together.
- Fold the ½-inch waistband allowance inside.
- Topstitch the folded allowance on the right side of the waistband.
- The finished waistband is 1½ inches wide.
The order matters: darts come first, the zipper goes in before the waistband, and the waistband is finished with topstitching.
Activities in this module
- What I Know (Activity 1): 15-item multiple-choice pretest.
- What’s In: a look at the cut parts of an A-line skirt and the things to prepare before assembling.
- What’s New (Activity 2): scrambled letters to unscramble into sewing words.
- What’s More (Activity 3): 10 true-or-false items. Write / if correct and X if wrong.
- What I Have Learned (Activity 4): unscramble the letters to find 10 sewing terms.
- What I Can Do (Activity 5): arrange 15 pictures in the correct order of sewing the skirt.
- Post-Assessment (Activity 6): 15-item multiple-choice test.
- Additional Activity (Activity 7): a word search for 15 sewing terms.
How to use this module
Learners: Answer What I Know first, then go through the parts in order and finish each task before moving on. Write all answers on a separate sheet, not on the module. Check your work honestly with the answer key at the end. Return the module to your teacher or facilitator when you are done.
Parents and guardians: The module asks you to support your child’s home learning. Remind your child to use separate answer sheets and to ask the teacher when a task is hard.
Teachers and facilitators: Orient learners on how to use the module and track their progress. Check the answer key before using it. Some printed answers do not match the lesson. For example, the key for the zipper item gives “right over left,” but the lesson says left over right. No answers are printed for What’s More or What I Can Do.
