TLE 10 Quarter 1 Module 1: Carrying Out Inventory Activities (Agricultural Crop Production NC II)

This self-learning module is for Grade 10 learners taking Technology and Livelihood Education (TLE) with a specialization in Agricultural Crop Production NC II. Quarter 1, Module 1, “Carrying out inventory activities (Determining inventory inputs according to enterprise requirements),” is meant for Week 1 of the quarter. It teaches learners what farm inputs are and how to list them, with their costs, when planning farm production.

What learners will learn

The module covers this learning competency:

  • LO 1. Carry out inventory activities
    • 1.1 Determine inventory inputs according to enterprise requirements
  • Learning competency code: TLE_AFAAPC9-12PRK-Ia-b-13

After the module, learners are expected to:

  1. identify the different farm inputs;
  2. carry out an inventory of the farm inputs required in a farm plan; and
  3. consider farm inputs in farm production planning.

Where this lesson fits

The module links the lesson to a larger competency in agriculture, Perform Record-Keeping. This covers three skills:

TopicWhat it involves
Carry out inventory activitiesDetermining inventory inputs, finding defective tools and equipment, inspecting facilities
Maintain production recordsPreparing production plans, schedules, and reports; monitoring inputs and production with a monitoring chart
Prepare financial recordsComputing production cost and revenue

This module deals with the first item: determining inventory inputs according to enterprise requirements.

Key ideas: farm inputs and outputs

The module defines farm inputs as the resources used in farm production, such as chemicals, equipment, feed, seed, and other planting materials. Inputs are also the things put into the production process, such as land, labor, implements, seed, mechanization (tractors), fertilizer, and pesticides.

Outputs are what the farm produces, such as harvested crops, milk, meat, and eggs.

Planting materials

The module shows these types of planting materials:

  • Seeds
  • Seedlings
  • Tissue culture
  • Cuttings
  • Root cuttings

Other farm inputs

  • Fertilizer
  • Concoctions
  • Mulching
  • Irrigation
  • Beneficial organisms (for example, earthworms)
  • Pesticides
  • Farm equipment (for example, a tractor)
  • Other farm activities that need labor

Farm activities that need labor

Labor is an input and an expense. The answer key gives examples of farm activities that need workers: harrowing, clearing, weeding, transplanting, fencing, harvesting, and plowing. The picture items in the tests also include potting, spraying, plotting, leveling, watering, and harvesting.

Why inventory matters in farm planning

The module explains that listing the inputs and activities on a farm helps you plan and gives you an idea of the possible expenses. In the final activity, learners build a simple farm plan with two parts:

  • Farm inputs: quantity, unit, item or description, unit price, and total price
  • Labor requirements: activity, number of days, number of workers, and total expense at P350 per day

The two totals are added to get the total expenses of farm inputs plus labor.

Activities in this module

  • What I Know (pretest): a 10-item matching test on farm inputs and activities, plus naming five farm activities from pictures.
  • What’s In: a checklist where learners mark (X) or (√) the record-keeping outcomes they have already learned.
  • What’s New: two short essay questions (no more than five sentences each), scored for content, grammar, and organization.
  • What’s More: give at least three examples of farm inputs and list seven farm activities that need labor.
  • What I Have Learned: a reflection where learners rate their understanding from 1 to 10.
  • What I Can Do: cut out a picture of a farm, paste it on a sheet, and list all the farm inputs and activities seen in it.
  • Post-Assessment: a 10-item multiple-choice test and five picture items.
  • Additional Activity: complete the farm plan table using the picture from What I Can Do.

How to use this module

  • Learners: Answer What I Know first, then go through the parts in order and finish each task before moving on. Write all answers on a separate sheet of paper and do not mark the module. Check your work honestly with the answer key, and return the module to your teacher when you are done.
  • Parents and guardians: You are the main support at home. Help your child find a farm picture for What I Can Do and remind them to use separate answer sheets.
  • Teachers and facilitators: Orient learners on how to use the module and track their progress. The answer key gives answers for the tests and What’s More; the essay, What I Can Do, and Additional Activity are scored with the rubrics printed in the module.
