This is the Grade 10 Technology and Livelihood Education (TLE) self-learning module for Dressmaking NC II, Quarter 1, Module 7: Apply Finishing Touches on Ladies’ Skirt. It is meant for Week 7 of the quarter and covers the last stage of making a ladies’ skirt: adding fasteners, hemming, pressing, and tidying the finished garment. By the end, learners should be able to name the common finishing touches and apply them to their own skirt project.
The module was developed by the Department of Education – Cordillera Administrative Region as part of its Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) materials. It was written by Romana T. Laoyan.
What learners will learn
The module targets this competency (code TLE_HEDM9-12Sk-lj-4):
- LO 4. Apply finishing touches on ladies’ skirt
- 4.1 Apply finishing touches
- 4.2 Press finished ladies’ skirts/garment
- 4.3 Pack finished ladies’ skirt/garment
After the module, learners are expected to:
- identify the different finishing touches on a ladies’ skirt;
- apply the finishing touches on a ladies’ skirt; and
- develop resourcefulness, creativity, independence, and passion for learning.
What finishing touches are
The module explains that applying finishing touches is the final step in sewing a garment such as a ladies’ skirt. Finishing touches give the garment beauty and better quality, and some of them also serve as decoration. Fasteners such as buttons, snaps, and zippers, as well as hand stitching, all count as finishing touches.
Kinds of fasteners
Fasteners help close garments securely. The module covers hooks and eyes, snaps, special nylon tape, buttons, and zippers.
Hooks and eyes
- Small hooks and eyes are used most often at necklines and waistlines.
- Large covered hooks and eyes are made for jackets and coats.
- Specialty heavy-duty hooks and bars are designed for waistbands on pants and skirts.
Snaps
Snaps hold overlapping edges together where there is not much strain.
- Small snaps are used at necklines or cuffs.
- Heavy gripper snaps are used for children’s clothes and sportswear.
- Large covered snaps are made for jackets and coats.
A snap has two sections: the ball, sewn to the overlap of the garment, and the socket, sewn to the underlap.
Buttons and buttonholes
Buttons and buttonholes are strong fasteners that can take a lot of pulling and strain. They are used on overlapping edges such as collars, cuffs, center fronts and backs, pockets, and waistbands.
| Buttons | Buttonholes |
|---|---|
| Sew-through (flat) buttons | Bound buttonholes: finished with a strip of fabric, made before the facing is attached |
| Shank buttons | Worked buttonholes: finished with thread, stitched by machine or by hand |
Zippers
Zippers are made of metal or plastic coil with a slider and come in different types, weights, and lengths. The conventional zipper is the most common type and has a stop at the bottom. The module also lists specialty, decorative, heavy-duty, and separating zippers.
Finishing steps shown in the module
The module uses photos of a skirt to show these finishing steps:
- Attaching a hook and eye on the waistband
- Hemming the bottom circumference of the skirt, by hand stitch or machine stitch
- Pressing the finished skirt with a flat iron to remove wrinkles
- Cutting hanging threads
How to use this module
The module follows the usual self-learning module parts: What I Know (a 15-item multiple-choice pretest), What’s In, What’s New (a letter-arranging activity), What Is It (the discussion), What’s More (picking the right tools and supplies from a word box), What I Have Learned (true or false), What I Can Do, the post-assessment, and an Additional Activity (a word search). An answer key is at the end.
- Learners: Answer the pretest before anything else, write all answers on a separate sheet, finish each task before moving on, and check your answers honestly. For What I Can Do, apply finishing touches to your own skirt and take a photo, or cut out a picture of a skirt with suitable finishing touches. Return the module to your teacher when done.
- Parents and guardians: Help your child follow the order of the parts and keep the module free of marks. The skirt task may need simple sewing supplies such as a hand needle, thread, and fasteners.
- Teachers and facilitators: Orient learners on using the module and track their progress. The What I Can Do output is scored with a rubric on workmanship and neatness (20, 15, or 10 points per criterion).
