Mathematics 9 Quarter 1 Module 21: Equation of Quadratic Function Given Table of Values

Grade 9 Math Q1 Module 21 shows how to find the equation of a quadratic function from a table of values, with the second-difference test and worked examples.

This is Module 21 of Grade 9 Mathematics for Quarter 1, used in Week 9. It teaches learners how to work backward from a table of values to the equation of the quadratic function. In the previous module, learners built a table of values from an equation. After this module, they should be able to look at a table, check whether it is quadratic, and find its equation in the form y = ax² + bx + c.

Checking if a table is quadratic: the second-difference test

Before finding an equation, learners must know whether the table is quadratic at all. The module uses the second-difference test: subtract each y-value from the next one (first differences), then subtract the first differences from each other (second differences). If the second differences are all the same, the table is quadratic.

The module’s example:

x-3-2-101
y1375713
  • First differences: -6, -2, 2, 6
  • Second differences: 4, 4, 4

The second difference is constant, so this table represents a quadratic function.

Finding the equation: the four-step method

The module turns the table into a system of three linear equations in three unknowns:

  1. Select three ordered pairs from the table.
  2. Substitute each ordered pair into the general form y = ax² + bx + c.
  3. Solve the system for a, b, and c.
  4. Substitute the values of a, b, and c back into the general form.

Example 1

x-10123
y0-1-4-9-16

Using (-1, 0), (0, -1), and (1, -4):

  • From (0, -1), c = -1 right away, because the x terms become zero.
  • From (-1, 0): 0 = a – b – 1, so b = a – 1.
  • From (1, -4): -4 = a + (a – 1) – 1, so -4 = 2a – 2 and a = -1. Then b = -2.

The equation is y = -x² – 2x – 1.

Example 2

x-3-1135
y21792761

Using (-1, 7), (1, 9), and (3, 27) gives 7 = a – b + c, 9 = a + b + c, and 27 = 9a + 3b + c. Subtracting the first equation from the second gives 2 = 2b, so b = 1. This leaves 8 = a + c and 24 = 9a + c, which give a = 2 and c = 6.

The equation is y = 2x² + x + 6.

A shortcut from the parent table of values

The Additional Activities show a faster way when the x-values go up by 1. If you fill in a table using y = ax² + bx + c itself, the second difference always comes out as 2a, and the first difference between x = 0 and x = 1 is a + b. So:

  • second difference = 2a
  • first difference from x = 0 to x = 1 = a + b
  • c = the value of y when x = 0 (the y-intercept)

For the table x: -1, 0, 1, 2, 3 and y: 16, 2, -2, 4, 20, the second difference is 10, so a = 5. The first difference from x = 0 to x = 1 is -4, so 5 + b = -4 and b = -9. Since y = 2 when x = 0, c = 2. The equation is y = 5x² – 9x + 2.

Rocket problem

The problem-based worksheet gives the height of a rocket shot straight up at times 1 to 7 seconds (144, 256, 336, 384, 400, 384, 336). Learners decide what kind of function the table shows, find a function h(t), and use it to find the maximum height and when the rocket returns to the ground. The answer key gives h(t) = -16t² + 160t, a maximum height of 400 ft, and a return to the ground after 10 seconds.

How to use this module

  • Learners: Take the pretest first and write your answers on a separate answer sheet. Check your answers, note the items you missed, and look for the right answers as you go through the module. Work through the parts in order, then take the assessment once you finish What I Can Do.
  • Parents: Ask your child to explain the second-difference test and the four steps out loud before trying the activities. The answer key at the end lets you check work together, but encourage your child to try each item first.
  • Teachers: The What’s More activity reuses the tables from What’s In, so learners classify first and then find the equations. The E-Search section lists YouTube and Khan Academy links for extra practice, and the Rocket worksheet works well as an application or group task.

What’s In

Communication, and Critical Thinking

Before going through this module, it is a must that you know how to determine if a table of values represents quadratic function.

How will you know if a table of values is quadratic function? The test called second-difference is used to determine whether a table of values is quadratic or not. If there is a common second difference, then the table is quadratic. Study the example below:

What’s New

Communication

Given a quadratic equation, a table of values can easily be formed by assigning values of x and solving for the value of y for each given value of x. However, you can also reverse the process if you want to know the equation that represents the table of values. This procedure is more complicated but very essential to

some careers like scientists, mathematicians, engineers, and those that need to formulate the equation that describes results of experiments or researches.

Do you know other careers that create formula from values they collected?

What is It

Communication, Critical Thinking, and Collaboration

If you are given table of values of quadratic function, you can find the equation that represents the function by creating a system of linear equation in three unknowns using the following steps:

  1. Select three ordered pairs from the table.
  2. Substitute each ordered pair into the general form of quadratic function; $y = ax^2 + bx + c$.
  3. Solve for the values of a, b, and c of the system of linear equations.
  4. Substitute the values of a, b and c to the general form of quadratic function.

Example 1: Find the equation that represent the quadratic function in the given table.

x-10123
y0-1-4-9-16

Solution:

a. Select three ordered pairs from the table. Let (-1, 0), (0, -1), and (1, -4) be the points on the graph of the quadratic function.

b. Substitute each ordered pair into the general form of quadratic function; $y = ax^2 + bx + c$

For (-1, 0): $0 = a(-1)^2 + b(-1) + c$ equation 1 For (0, -1): $-1 = a(0)^2 + b(0) + c$ equation 2 For (1, -4): $-4 = a(1)^2 + b(1) + c$ equation 3

c. Solve for the values of a, b, and c of the system of linear equations.

From equation 2, c = -1. Substitute the value of c to equation 1, $0 = a – b – 1$, so $b = a – 1$

Substitute the value of b and c to equation 3, then solve for a: $-4 = a + (a – 1) – 1$ $-4 = 2a – 2$ $a = -1$

Substituting the value of a, $b = a – 1$ $b = -1 – 1$ $b = -2$

Thus, a = -1, b = -2, and c = -1

GRADE 9 Learning Module for Junior High School Mathematics

6

d. Substitute the values of a, b and c to the general form of quadratic function $y = ax^2 + bx + c$ $y = -x^2 – 2x – 1$

Therefore, the equation that represents the table of value is $y = -x^2 – 2x – 1$.

Example 2. Find the equation that represent the quadratic function in the given table.

x-3-1135
y21792761

Solution:

  1. Select three ordered pairs from the table. Let (-1, 7), (1, 9), and (3, 27) be the points on the graph of the quadratic function.

  2. Substitute each ordered pair into the general form of quadratic function; $y = ax^2 + bx + c$

(-1, 7): $7 = a(-1)^2 + b(-1) + c$ equation 1 (1, 9): $9 = a(1)^2 + b(1) + c$ equation 2 (3, 27): $27 = a(3)^2 + b(3) + c$ equation 3

  1. Solve for the values of a, b, and c of the system of linear equations.

$7 = a – b + c$ $9 = a + b + c$ $27 = 9a + 3b + c$

Subtract equation 1 from equation 2, $9 = a + b + c$ $7 = a – b + c$ $2 = 2b$ $1 = b$

Substitute the value of b to equation 2 and 3, then solve simultaneously, $9 = a + 1 + c \rightarrow 8 = a + c$ $27 = 9a + 3(1) + c \rightarrow 24 = 9a + c$ $-16 = -8a$ $2 = a$

Solving for c, substitute a and b to any of the equations above, $8 = a + c$ $8 = 2 + c$ $6 = c$

Thus, a = 2, b = 1 and c = 6

d. Substitute the values of a, b and c to the general form of quadratic function $y = ax^2 + bx + c$ $y = 2x^2 + x + 6$

Therefore, the equation that represent the given table is $y = 2x^2 + x + 6$.
