Health 9 Quarter 4 Module 4: Intentional Injuries (Extortion, Act of Terror and Kidnapping/Abduction)

This is the Grade 9 Health Self-Learning Module (SLM) for Quarter 4, Module 4: Intentional Injuries (Extortion, Act of Terror and Kidnapping/Abduction). It was developed by the Department of Education Region X under the Alternative Delivery Mode (First Edition, 2020) so Grade 9 learners can study at home. After working through it, learners should be able to describe three types of intentional injuries: extortion, acts of terror, and kidnapping or abduction.

What learners will learn

The module states one learning objective. Learners are expected to:

  • Describe the types of intentional injuries like extortion, act of terror, and kidnapping/abduction.

The module has one lesson, Lesson 1: Intentional Injury (Extortion, Act of Terror and Kidnapping/Abduction). It covers the last three topics of the quarter’s unit on intentional injuries.

Key terms: extortion, terrorism, kidnapping, and abduction

The module calls all three intentional acts that can harm innocent people. Here is how it defines each one.

Extortion

Extortion is getting money or property from someone by force or threats. An extortionist may blackmail a person. For example, they may threaten to reveal embarrassing or damaging information unless the victim pays money or hands over property. The module’s summary gives bribery of politicians by investors as an example people hear about in the news.

Acts of terror

An act of terror, or terrorism, is an intentional act that can seriously damage a country by destroying its basic political, economic, or social structures. Terrorist groups use violence, fear, and pressure on their victims.

Kidnapping and abduction

The module explains how the two differ:

KidnappingAbduction
What it isCarrying a person away by force, usually with a ransom demand for moneyTaking a person or child away from home or relatives by deceit or force, or making someone go somewhere through violence or threat
Who does itUsually an acquaintance or stranger who knows about the family’s wealth, or who has a sexual motive toward the victimUsually someone the victim knows or is related to
MotiveOften money (ransom)Usually not for profit or money

Six categories of terrorism

In the “What I Have Learned” part, the module lists six categories of terrorism:

  1. State terrorism: the state or government terrorizes citizens with force or threats to reach a political goal, without declaring war.
  2. Bioterrorism: the intentional release of toxic biological agents, such as viruses, bacteria, and toxins, that could kill thousands of people.
  3. Cyberterrorism: attacks using computer systems or telecommunications to draw attention to the terrorists’ cause.
  4. Ecoterrorism: acts that harm animals or the natural environment, or that destroy property to cause economic damage to industries. The post-test calls this environmental terrorism.
  5. Nuclear terrorism: a terrorist tactic that uses nuclear materials, such as attacking nuclear facilities, building nuclear weapons, or spreading radioactive materials.
  6. Narcoterrorism: acts by drug traffickers to stop government efforts against the drug trade, including assassinating anti-drug officials.

The module also includes a news item. It reports that on July 3, 2020, President Rodrigo R. Duterte signed the Anti-Terrorism Act of 2020, which amends a 2007 law. Rights groups and some lawmakers raised concerns that it could worsen human rights abuses.

Activities in this module

  • Pre-test (What I Know): a 10-item matching test on the key terms and types of terrorism.
  • Activity 1, Can you feel it?: sort intentional injuries under extortion, act of terror, or kidnapping/abduction.
  • Activity 2: describe the effects of extortion, acts of terror, and kidnapping/abduction on the community, the economy, and the school.
  • Activity 3, Headline News: write at least five news headlines about terrorism in the Philippines.
  • Activity 4, Example of terrorism: name the category for examples such as introducing a virus to a vulnerable network, the Ebola or Marburg virus, the Marawi siege, spiking trees to disrupt logging, the Hiroshima bombing, and transporting and selling illegal drugs. Then explain whether COVID-19 can be considered a terrorist attack.
  • Activity 5, My Scrapbook: make a clean, detailed, informative scrapbook on the topic, using cut-out pictures.
  • Post-test (Assessment): a 10-item multiple-choice test.

How to use this module

  • Learners: Start with the pre-test to check what you already know. Then go through the parts in order: What’s New, What Is It, What’s More, What I Have Learned, and What I Can Do. Finish with the post-test. Write all answers on a separate sheet of paper, and do not mark the module.
  • Parents and facilitators: The module includes an answer key for the pre-test and post-test. Encourage your child to answer honestly before checking. If your child has trouble with a task, help them contact their teacher.
  • Teachers: The activities work well as outputs to collect, especially the headline list, the effects table, and the scrapbook. The COVID-19 question in Activity 4 is open-ended and can start a class discussion.
