This is the Grade 8 Health Self-Learning Module (SLM) for Quarter 4, Module 3, titled “Battle against Bottle.” It was developed by DepEd Caraga Region under the Alternative Delivery Mode (First Edition, 2020) and has one lesson on the negative health impacts of drinking alcohol. After working through it, learners should be able to explain how alcohol harms the body, read Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) in terms of changes in the body, and share what they learned through a jingle.
What learners will learn
The module’s competency is: analyze the negative health impact of drinking alcohol (H8S-IVe-f-31). By the end of the module, learners are expected to:
- Describe the harmful short-term and long-term effects of drinking alcohol.
- Interpret Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) in terms of physiological changes in the body.
- Compose a jingle that centers on the negative health impact of alcohol.
Lesson in this module
- Lesson 1: Negative Health Impacts of Drinking Alcohol. The lesson describes alcohol as a liquid substance that contains alcohol such as ethyl, which can cause harm and even damage a person’s DNA. It notes that alcohol use is recognized worldwide as a leading risk factor for disease, disability, and death, and is the most used and most abused substance among adolescents.
The lesson builds on the previous module, which covered the negative health impact of cigarette smoking.
Key ideas and terms to review
The module’s questions and tests point to the ideas learners should be able to explain:
- Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC): the measure of alcohol intake, based on the amount of alcohol in the blood.
- Hangover: a severe headache caused by drinking an excess of alcohol.
- Alcoholism: a disease in which a person has a physical and psychological need for alcohol.
- The liver: the organ that filters toxins and poisons from the body. Long-term drinking can lead to liver cirrhosis, a deadly disease that replaces healthy liver tissue with useless scar tissue.
- The brain and central nervous system: the parts of the body most affected by alcohol. The central nervous system, not the peripheral nervous system, controls mental processes, memory, speech, and decision-making.
- Types of alcohol: fermentation is the process of getting alcohol from a plant or a fruit. Beverage alcohol is not methanol. Alcohols such as methanol and isopropyl can cause extreme damage to the bloodstream and even death.
- Other health effects: gastritis (inflammation of the stomach walls) and anemia (not having enough healthy red blood cells to carry oxygen to body tissues).
- Injuries linked to drinking: intentional injuries include sexual abuse and firearm injuries. Unintentional injuries include burns, drowning, falls, and car crashes.
Activities and assessment
| Part | What learners do |
|---|---|
| What I Know | A 15-item multiple-choice pretest |
| What’s In: Activity 1, Check the Label | Tick which of five impacts of cigarette smoking (death, deterioration of cells, lung cancer, developed illness, bad breath) are also impacts of drinking alcohol |
| What I Have Learned | Answer questions on how alcohol changes behavior, its effects on the central nervous system, and how BAC measures blood alcohol level |
| What I Can Do: Activity 4, Compose, Ready Sing! | Write a two-minute jingle on the negative health impact of alcohol |
| Assessment | Test I (5 multiple-choice items) and Test II (10 true-or-false items) |
The jingle is scored with a rubric on three criteria, each worth 1 to 3 points:
- Content: 3 points for 5 or more negative impacts of alcohol, 2 points for 3 to 4, 1 point for 0 to 2.
- Organization: well-organized lyrics that make full use of rhyme and poetic elements earn the highest score.
- Timeliness: 3 points if submitted ahead of time, 2 if on time, 1 if after the deadline.
How to use this module
- Learners: Start with the pretest to check what you already know. Then go through each part in order. Write all answers on a separate sheet of paper or in your activity notebook, not on the module. The answer key is at the back; use it honestly to check your work after you answer, then take the assessment to see how much you learned.
- Parents: Help your child plan time for the jingle and keep track of the deadline, since timeliness is part of the score. The module notes that some activities may ask learners to go out and conduct interviews, so your support may be needed.
- Teachers: The Notes to the Teacher remind facilitators to help learners with any difficulties in activities that involve interviews. Use the rubric to grade the jingle and the tests to check mastery of the competency.
