This is the Grade 6 Mathematics Quarter 2 Module 4 self-learning module, Finding the Percentage, Base and Rate in a Given Problem. It is a First Edition (2020) Alternative Delivery Mode module from the Department of Education Region VI. It is for Grade 6 learners studying at home or in class, and for the parents and teachers who guide them. After the three lessons, learners should be able to tell the percentage, rate, and base apart in a word problem and solve for whichever one is missing.
In this article 7 sections
What learners will learn
After going through this module, learners are expected to:
- identify the percentage, rate and base in a given problem;
- find the base, percentage or rate or percent in a given problem (M6NS-IId-142); and
- solve routine and non-routine problems involving the percentage, rate and base using appropriate strategies and tools (M6NS-IId-143).
Lessons in this module
- Lesson 1 – Finding the Percentage in a Given Problem. Learners find the part of a whole when the percent and the whole are given. This lesson uses changing percents to decimals and multiplying decimals.
- Lesson 2 – Finding the Rate or Percent in a Given Problem. Learners find what percent one number is of another. This lesson relies on dividing, especially dividing decimals.
- Lesson 3 – Finding the Base in a Given Problem. Learners find the whole, or 100%, when a part and its percent are given.
Percentage, rate and base at a glance
Every percent problem has three parts. If you know two of them, you can find the third. The module defines them like this:
| Part | What it means | Formula |
|---|---|---|
| Percentage (P) | The actual amount that is part of a whole | P = R x B |
| Rate (R) | The ratio of the percentage to the base, written as a percent | R = P ÷ B x 100 |
| Base (B) | The whole amount, representing 100% | B = P ÷ R |
For example, in “2% of 30 is 0.6,” the base is 30, the rate is 2%, and the percentage is 0.6.
How the module solves percent problems
Each lesson uses the four-step problem-solving approach: Understand (what is given and what is asked), Plan, Solve, and Check. Each one also shows the same problem solved in several ways, so learners can see that every method gives the same answer.
Finding the percentage (Lesson 1)
Problem: Twenty-five percent of Daisy’s 20 potted plants are peppers. How many are peppers?
- Block model: Split 20 into four equal blocks. 25% is one block, so 20 ÷ 4 = 5.
- Percent as a fraction: 25/100 x 20 = 1/4 x 20 = 5.
- Percent as a decimal: 0.25 x 20 = 5.
Answer: 5 potted plants are peppers. The lesson also works through harder problems. In one, two books cost ₱225 and Book A costs 80% of Book B, so Book A costs ₱100. In another, Harvey saves ₱675 from a ₱4500 salary.
Finding the rate (Lesson 2)
Problem: A school chess club has 50 members, and 29 are girls. What percent are girls?
- Block model: 50 members = 100%, so 1 member = 2%, and 29 members = 58%.
- Equivalent fractions: 29/50 = 58/100 = 58%.
- Formula: R = 29/50 x 100% = 58%.
Finding the base (Lesson 3)
Problem: There are 72 Grade 6 pupils, and they make up 12% of the school’s enrolment. How many pupils are enrolled?
- Block model: 12% = 72, so 1% = 6, and 100% = 600.
- Equivalent fractions: 12/100 = 72/600.
- Formula: B = 72 ÷ 0.12 = 600.
A second example finds a number when 37% of it is 41.44. The answer is 112.
How to use this module
Each lesson follows the same parts:
- What I Know – a pretest
- What’s In – a review
- What’s New – the problem the lesson starts from
- What is It – the worked solutions
- What’s More – practice
- What I Have Learned – a summary
- What I Can Do – applying the skill
- Assessment
- Additional Activities
An answer key follows each lesson. Write all answers and solutions on a separate answer sheet, and label your final answers as the directions ask.
- Learners: Work through the lessons in order, since Lessons 2 and 3 build on the percentage skills from Lesson 1. Try each method shown, then check your work against the answer key only after you finish.
- Parents: Have your child explain which part of the problem is missing (percentage, rate, or base) before solving. This is the first skill the module asks for.
- Teachers: The problems use everyday settings such as sales, discounts, savings, salaries, test scores, and attendance. The Additional Activities in Lesson 3 ask learners to write their own problems from given data, which can serve as an extension task.
Frequently asked questions
What grade and quarter is this module for?
It is for Grade 6 Mathematics, Quarter 2, Module 4. It is a First Edition (2020) Alternative Delivery Mode module from DepEd Region VI.

CO_Q2_Mathematics6_Module4
Method 2: Expressing percent to fraction
25% of potted plants = 25% of 20 = 25/100 x 20 = 1/4 x 20 = 5
[illustration: thought bubble reading “Are there other ways to find the answer?”]
Method 3: Expressing percent as decimal
25% of potted plants = 25% of 20 = 0.25 x 20 = 5
Check Each method gives us the same answer.
Answer 5 potted plants are peppers.
Here are more examples.
In an elementary school, 30% of the 250 Grade Six pupils walk to school. How many Grade Six pupils walk to school?
Method 1: Using a block model
[chart: block model; bar divided into ten equal blocks labeled “100% (250 Grade Six pupils)”, with the first three blocks labeled “30% (? Grade Six pupils walk to school)”]
100% → 250 10% → 250 ÷ 10 = 25 30% → 25 x 3 = 75
Method 2: Using a formula
P = R x B = 30% x 250 = 30/100 x 250 = 3/10 x 250
[illustration: thought bubble “Think: What number is 30% of 250?” with arrows labeled Percentage = Rate x Base]
Answer: 75 Grade Six pupils walk to school.
[chart: bar model; unnumbered, illustrates “Two books cost ₱225. The cost of Book A is 80% of the cost of Book B.”; labels: Book A (8 units, bracket 80%), Book B (10 units, bracket 100%), ₱225]
Two books cost ₱225. The cost of Book A is 80% of the cost of Book B. How much does Book A cost?
18 units = ₱ 225 1 unit = 225 ÷ 18 1 unit = 12.5 Book A = 8 units Book A = 8 x 12.5 Book A = ₱ 100
Harvey’s weekly salary is ₱4500. He sets aside 40% of this for his daily expenses and 25% of the remaining as savings. How much does he save?
[chart: bar model; unnumbered, illustrates Harvey’s salary problem; labels: 100% → ₱4500, 10 units with “1 unit = 10%”, dashed portion and ₱2700 bar]
100% → 4500 → 4500 ÷ 100 1% → 45
Since the remaining amount is 60% 60% → 60 x 45 = 2700 60% → 2700
To answer the second question, you may ask, what is 25% of 2700?
[chart: bar model; unnumbered, illustrates 25% of ₱2700; labels: 100% → ₱2700, 10 units with “1 unit = 27”]
100% → ₱2700 → 2700 ÷ 100 1% → 27 25% → 25 x 27 = 675 25% → 675
Answer: ₱675- Harvey’s savings

What’s New
Read and study the following problems:
A school chess club has 50 members. Twenty-nine of them are girls. What percent of the chess club are girls?
What Is It
Use the four-step problem-solving approach to help you.
Understand
What information are given?
We know that 29 out of 50 members of the school’s chess club are girls.
What is asked?
We need to find how many how many percent of the chess club are girls.
This means that we are looking for the rate.
Plan
We can use different methods to solve the problem.
Solve
Method 1: Using a block model
[chart: block model; Method 1: Using a block model]
- Top bracket label: 100 % (50 members)
- Shaded block label: 29
- Bottom bracket label: ?
- Callout: The total number of members in the chess club is equal to 100%.
50 members → 100% 1 member → 100% ÷ 50 = 2% 29 members → 2% x 29 = 58%
Method 2: Using equivalent fractions
29 out of 50 members are girls
29/50 = ?/100 = 58/100 = 58%
Method 3: Using a formula
Rate (R) = Percentage (P) / Base (B) x 100 = 29/50 x 100% = 0.58 x 100% = 58%
[chart: formula diagram; callout]
- What percent of 50 is 29

What’s New
There are 72 Grade 6 pupils in a school. The Grade six pupils comprise 12% of the total enrolment. How many pupils are enrolled in a school?
In this lesson, you will learn on how to find the base in a given problem using the formula and different strategy.
What is It
We will use the four-step problem-solving approach to help you.
Understand
What information are given? We know that 12% of the total enrolment in the school is equal to 72 Grade Six pupils.
What is asked? We need to find the total number of pupils in the school. This means we are looking for the base.
Plan
We can use different methods to solve the problem.
Solve
Method 1: Using a block model
[chart: block model; labels: “100% ( ? pupils )” above the full bar, “72” in the small segment, “12%” below the small segment. Printed beneath the bar:]
12% of the enrolment → 72 1% of the enrolment → 72 ÷ 12 = 6 100% of the enrolment → 6 x 100 = 600
[illustration: thought bubble reading “The total number of members in the chess club is equal to…”]
Method 2: Using equivalent fractions
[chart: equivalent fractions; printed: “12 / 100 = 72 / ? = 72 / 600”, with “x 6” printed above and below the first two fractions]
[illustration: thought bubble reading “12% = 12/100”]
Method 3: Using a formula
Base (B) = Percentage (P) / Rate (R) = 72 / 12% = 72 / 0.12 = 600
[illustration: cloud reading “12% of what number is 72?” with “Rate x Base = Percentage” printed beneath it]
Check Each method gives us the same answer.
Answer 600 pupils are enrolled in the school.
Here is another example.
Percy thinks of a number. Thirty-seven percent of the number is 41.44. What is the number?
Use the four-step problem-solving approach to help you.
Understand
What information are given? We know that 37% of that number is 41.44.
What is asked? We need to find what is the original number which is the 100% of that number. This means we are looking for the base.
Plan
We can use different methods to solve the problem.
Solve
Method 1: Using a block model
[chart: block model; labels: “100% (?)” above the full bar, “41.44” in the small segment, “37% (41.44)” below the small segment. Printed beneath the bar:]
37% of the enrolment → 41.44 1% of the enrolment → 41.44 ÷ 37 = 1.12 100% of the enrolment → 1.12 x 100 = 112
[illustration: thought bubble reading “The original number or the 100% of the number is equal to…”]
Method 2: Using equivalent fractions
[chart: equivalent fractions; printed: “37 / 100 = 41.44 / ? = 41.44 / 112”, with “x 1.12” printed above and below the first two fractions]
[illustration: thought bubble reading “37% = 37/100”]
Method 3: Using a formula
Base (B) = Percentage (P) / Rate (R) = 41.44 / 37% = 41.44 / 0.37 = 112
[illustration: cloud reading “37% of what number is 41.11?” with “Rate x Base = Percentage” printed beneath it] [transcriber’s note: the cloud prints 41.11, although the problem states 41.44; transcribed as printed]
Check Each method gives us the same answer.
