This is the English 8 Quarter 1 Module 5 self-learning module, “Expressing Emotional Response and Reactions to an Issue to Persuade Using a Range of Verbs, Adjectives, and Adverbs.” It was developed by DepEd Caraga Region (Alternative Delivery Mode, First Edition, 2020) for Grade 8 learners studying at home or in class. After working through it, learners can state their feelings and opinions on an issue clearly and convincingly, and write a persuasive paragraph.
On this page 7 sections
What learners will learn
The Most Essential Learning Competency (MELC) covered is: use a range of verbs, adjectives, and adverbs to convey emotional response or reactions to an issue to persuade.
By the end of the module, learners are expected to:
- identify the appropriate verbs, adjectives, and adverbs used in conveying emotions and opinions for persuasion;
- use appropriate verbs, adjectives, and adverbs in expressing emotions and opinions for persuasion; and
- write a persuasive paragraph using verbs, adjectives, and adverbs.
Lessons in this module
- Using Verbs to Express Emotional Responses. Introduces emotional response verbs and modal verbs, using a comic dialogue between Noel and his Nanay during the Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ).
- Using Adjectives to Express Emotional Responses. Shows how adjectives can express positive and negative emotions, not just describe nouns and pronouns.
- Using Adverbs to Express Emotional Responses. Focuses on adverbs of opinion, using scenes from the Japanese tale “Story of the Aged Mother” and the value of filial piety (respect for parents and elders).
Key ideas: verbs that persuade
Emotional response verbs express an action or a state of emotion. The module groups them this way:
| Positive | Negative | Neutral |
|---|---|---|
| agree, amuse, appreciate, excite, interest, love, motivate, overwhelm, please, thrill | annoy, bore, confuse, deny, doubt, dislike, disagree, frustrate, puzzle, scare | believe, feel, know, realize, think, want, surprise |
For example, in “The possibility of you getting sick scares me,” the verb scares states an emotion, and stating an emotion is one way to convince someone.
Modal verbs give suggestions or recommendations. The module arranges them from weakest to strongest:
| Modal | Use |
|---|---|
| could | a suggestion a person may or may not follow |
| should | a suggestion that is more insistent than could |
| ought to | a formal advice or recommendation, usually from an expert |
| had better | a recommendation that warns of a negative consequence |
| must | a strong obligation that needs to be followed |
Example: “You had better wear your mask in public places or the police will arrest you” shows the consequence, which makes it a warning.
Key ideas: adjectives and adverbs of opinion
Adjectives can express emotional responses to an issue. Examples of positive ones include glad, thankful, satisfied, inspired, delighted, hopeful, and supportive. Negative ones include sad, resentful, scared, discouraged, embarrassed, anxious, and helpless. In “As your friend, I will be delighted if you share your problems to me,” delighted shows a positive feeling.
Adverbs of opinion emphasize how strongly you hold a stand and clarify your belief about an issue. Common ones include fortunately, unfortunately, hopefully, clearly, probably, obviously, evidently, surely, absolutely, strongly, truly, really, actually, completely, and definitely. Compare “I agree that old people must be respected” with “I strongly agree that old people must be respected”; the second sounds more convincing.
The module explains where these adverbs go:
- at the beginning of a sentence, followed by a comma (“Clearly, the farmer loved his old mother.”)
- before the main verb (“We definitely need to follow this health measure.”)
- between an auxiliary verb and a main verb (“…is evidently shown…”)
Phrases can also work as adverbs of opinion: from my view, to be frank, in fact, in my opinion, and without a doubt.
The module ties all three together in a sample persuasive paragraph on healthy eating, which uses must and ought to, adjectives such as important and frightening, and adverbs such as definitely, absolutely, and completely. A persuasive paragraph aims to convince readers to agree with the writer’s opinion on an issue.
How to use this module
- Start with What I Know, a 15-item multiple-choice pretest, to check what you already know.
- Go through each lesson in order: What’s In (review), What’s New, What is It (discussion), What’s More (activities and assessments), and What I Have Learned (reflection).
- Write on a separate sheet of paper, as the module asks, and do not mark the module itself.
- Do the writing tasks using the rubrics provided. Each lesson ends with a persuasive paragraph, for example advice to a friend struggling with mental health. What I Can Do asks for a comment on a barangay health center post, and the Additional Activities ask how to avoid spreading fake news.
- Finish with the 15-item Assessment (post-test), then check your answers in the answer key at the back. The module trusts learners to use the key honestly.
For parents: guide your child through the parts in order and help them find a quiet time for the writing tasks; the module encourages learners to ask a teacher or facilitator when they have difficulty.
For teachers: the rubrics score ideas, use of the target words, and number of complete sentences (5 to 7 for the top score), which makes them easy to apply to submitted paragraphs.

Lesson 1 Using Verbs to Express Emotional Responses
What’s In
In the previous module, you learned about transition signals to achieve coherence. Refresh your knowledge about them through the following activity.
Activity: What’s that Word
Choose the appropriate transition signals that best complete the paragraph below.
Therefore For example As a result Unfortunately In the same way
Mental health is the ability to work, love and play in a balanced measure. , if there is no balance between these things, our mind may get sick., if we just keep on working and have no time for rest and relaxation, our mind may get tired. We suffer from stress. _______________, we may suffer from illnesses of the mind.
The paragraph above uses transition signals to present and connect ideas about health. In this module, you will learn other words that will help present ideas, as well as feelings or emotion.
What’s New
In life, we all face a lot of challenges. Sometimes, we differ on how we respond to them. However, our responses, regardless if it is positive or negative, must be expressed properly.
In this part of the module, you will do a self-reflection on how you respond to different situations given in the activity below.
Activity: I Must or I Must Not
In this time of pandemic, it is important for us to be physically and mentally healthy. Which of the following activities is/are good for your health? Write I MUST if the activity shown helps you to be healthy and write I MUST NOT if it doesn’t.

If you have noticed, the words must and must not are used in the activity to show your response. The word must is one of the words that you can use to express opinions in order to convince or persuade.
What is It
This part of the module will teach you different verbs that you can use to communicate your emotions or opinions to certain issues.
Read the dialogue between Noel and Nanay. Study the underlined verbs.
[illustration: four-panel comic of Noel and Nanay, with the dialogue below in reading order]
Panel 1: Nanay, I want to go outside. I already missed playing with my friends. Panel 1: Unfortunately, we are still under Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ). You better stay home. The possibility of you geting sick scares me.
Panel 2: What happens during ECQ, Nanay? Panel 2: During ECQ, the government must control the people’s movement in public to stop the spread of the virus. That’s why it is important for us to stay at home.
Panel 3: But Nanay, can you just give me 30 minutes to play outside? Panel 3: No, Noel, I strongly disagree. You should follow what I tell you. Panel 3: So, what should I do now?
Panel 4: I suggest you just play with your brother and sister, Jose and Nene, or you could join me pray for your Tatay’s safety since he is a frontliner. Panel 4: Okay, Nanay. I will join your pray for Tatay. I am glad to do that for him.
Illustrated by: Anselmo S. Osores Jr.
What types of verbs are used in the dialogue above?
The underlined words are verbs used to highlight emotions and opinions. They are classified in the next pages.
A. EMOTIONAL RESPONSE VERBS
The table below shows their function and examples.
| Type of Verb | Function | Positive | Negative | Neutral |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Emotional Response Verbs | These verbs express an action or a state of emotion. | agree amuse appreciate excite interest love motivate overwhelm please thrill | annoy bore confuse deny doubt dislike disagree frustrate puzzle scare | believe feel know realize think want surprise |
Sample sentences taken from the dialogue:
You better stay home. The possibility of you getting sick scares me.
(The verb “scarefs” is used to state the unpleasant emotion towards the possibility of getting sick. Stating an emotion is a way in convincing someone.)No, Noel. I strongly disagree. You should follow what I tell you.
(The verb disagree states the stand of the speaker. Emphasizing a stand is a good way in influencing someone to agree with your ideas.)
A. MODAL VERBS
In Module 3, you have learned that modal verbs have different uses. The modals given below are verbs that express suggestion or recommendation which is an effective way to convince or persuade. To further clarify the difference of each modal, they are arranged from weakest to strongest in terms of expressing a suggestion or recommendation. Furthermore, the table shows their functions and examples.
| Type of Verb Modals | Functions | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Could | It is used to give a suggestion which a person may or may not follow. | I suggest you play with your brother and sister or you could join me pray for your Tatay’s safety. (The modal could is used to give a suggestion that the person could join the speaker in praying.) |
| Should | It is also used to give a suggestion but more insistent than the modal could. | No, Noel. I strongly disagree. You should follow what I tell you. (The modal should is used to suggest that the person needs to follow what the speaker tells.) |
[transcriber’s note: table continued from the previous page]
| Type of Verb Modals | Functions | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Ought to | It is used to formally give an advice or a recommendation usually coming from an expert. | The Department of Health (DOH) recommends that people ought to stay at home so that they will not get sick. (The modal ought to is used to formally suggest that staying at home is important.) |
| Had better | It is used to give a recommendation by presenting the possible negative consequence if the advice is not followed. | During the Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ), you had better wear your mask in public places or the police will arrest you. (The modal had better is used since the possible negative consequence, the police will arrest you, is presented to serve as a warning.) |
| Must | It is used to show a strong obligation that needs to be followed. | The government must control the people’s movement in public to stop the spread of the virus. (The modal must is used to express the strong obligation of the government in taking action against the spread of the virus.) |
Now, you will see these types of verbs used in a persuasive paragraph. A persuasive paragraph aims to convince the readers to agree with the author’s opinion about an issue or topic.
We all know that good nutrition is important, but the pandemic definitely made us realize that we must practice eating healthy at all times. As always mentioned by health professionals, we ought to eat a well-balanced diet accompanied with regular exercise. Absolutely, this is essential in maintaining physical health as well as mental health. Without this, we are completely not safe from getting the deadly virus. So, why wait for this frightening moment to happen? Start eating nutritious food and motivate others to do the same.

Lesson 2 – Using Adjectives to Express Emotional Responses
What’s In
In the previous lesson, you learned about verbs. Refresh your knowledge about them through the following activity.
Activity:
Supply the appropriate Emotional Response Verb in each of the following sentences. On a separate sheet of paper write only the letter of the correct answer.
A. could B. had better C. inspire D. must E. should
- We ________ be thankful for waking up each day.
- Family members ________ one another to do better.
- Young people __________share their problems to their parents.
- You ______ seek advice from a guidance counselor if you are anxious.
- Children ________ eat more vegetables and fruits if they don’t want to get sick.
Aside from verbs, there are also other words that can be used to express emotions and opinions. These words will be discussed in the next pages.
What’s New
In this lesson, you will do another self-check on how you react and respond to different situations through the activity below.
Activity: FEELmojis
[illustration: three emoticon faces in a box]
Read each statement and indicate how you feel about them by choosing an emoticon inside the box. Draw your chosen emoticon on a separate sheet of paper.
Illustrated by: Anselmo S. Osores Jr
- I feel sad that some people waste their time on social media.
- Parents feel happy when they bond with their children.
- Reading books makes me feel excited than playing mobile games.
Take note that the underlined words in the activity express emotions. They are called adjectives. You will learn more about them in this lesson.
What is It
You have learned in Lesson 1 that there are verbs that can be used to express your emotions and reactions. This time, you will learn a set of adjectives that can also help tell your emotions on a certain issue.
Describing nouns and pronouns is not the only function of an adjective. It could also be used to express varied emotional responses and reactions to an issue. To effectively convince the readers, one must know how to appropriately use adjectives that express positive and negative emotions in creating statements and paragraphs.
Below are the adjectives that are used to show positive and negative emotions.
| Adjectives Expressing Positive Emotions | Adjectives Expressing Negative Emotions | ||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Glad | Thankful | Satisfied | Sad | Resentful | Scared |
| Inspired | Important | Excited | Discouraged | Unsupportive | Harsh |
| Delighted | Objective | Strong | Insulting | Unsure | Boring |
| Secured | Safe | Amused | Embarrassed | Helpless | Weak |
| Encouraging | Active | Supportive | Regretful | Dissatisfied | Anxious |
| Hopeful | Better | Carefree | Insignificant | Discouraging | Worst |
Take a look at how these adjectives are used in sentences to convey emotions.
- As your friend, I will be delighted if you share your problems to me.
(In this sentence, the word delighted describes the positive feeling of the person about being able to listen to his or her friend’s problems.) - Some teenagers are regretful that they were not able to spend time with their friends before the Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ).
(The word regretful emphasizes the teenagers’ negative emotion on not being able to be with their friends before the ECQ.)
Notice how these adjectives are used in a paragraph.
**1.**As Filipinos, we love to be with our family during dinner time to share our best or worst experiences of the day. **2.**However, this practice has been gradually disappearing because of technology. **3.**Young people would rather use social media to express themselves for they are embarrassed to share their feelings to their parents. 4. On the other hand, parents are somehow guilty of contributing to the distance felt by their children for some of them are too busy with work such as taking office calls during meal time, checking emails, or surfing the internet. 5. Because of these, there is lesser time for families
to spend together. 6. This must change. 7. We must not let technology affect the time we spend with them. 8. Doing this will create better and stronger relationships.
[transcriber’s note: the paragraph box continues from the previous page]
In the 1st sentence, the adjectives best and worst are used to describe the positive and negative circumstances that a person could experience in a day.
In the 3rd sentence, the word embarrassed is used to describe the feelings of young people towards sharing their thoughts to their parents.
In the 4th sentence, the word guilty is used to describe the feeling of parents in being too busy at work even when at home.
In the last sentence, the words better and stronger are used to motivate the reader to create a bond with their parents rather than spending time with technology.
Now, take a look at another paragraph that uses adjectives together with the verbs that you have learned in Lesson 1. These range of adjectives and verbs are commonly used in writing a persuasive paragraph.
Reflect to Check:
We all know that good nutrition is important, but the pandemic definitely made us realize that we must practice eating healthy at all times. As always mentioned by health professionals, we ought to eat a well-balanced diet accompanied with regular exercise. Absolutely, this is essential in maintaining physical health as well as mental health. Without this, we are completely not safe from getting the deadly virus. So, why wait for this frightening moment to happen? Start eating nutritious food and motivate others to do the same.
What’s More
Practice what you have learned about adjectives in giving your emotional responses to an issue. Read and do what is asked in each activity below.

Lesson 3 – Using Adverbs to Express Emotional Responses
What’s In
You are now in the last lesson of this module but before you proceed, review what you learned about adjectives in Lesson 2 by doing the activity below.
Activity: Classifying Adverbs
Put a check mark (✓) if the statement uses an adjective that expresses a positive emotion and a cross mark ([illegible]) if not. Write your answers on a separate sheet of paper.
[transcriber’s note: the cross mark symbol is not legible in the rendered page]
- Following the health measures during the pandemic is really important. _____
- It is actually disappointing to see that some failed to follow the health measures. _____
- People are evidently delighted to be with their loved ones during the pandemic. _____
- Having a genuine conversation with our loved ones is definitely good for our mental health. _____
- Surely, a person with a weak immune system is prone to diseases. _____
Take note of the italicized words in the sentences. These words help emphasize the meaning of the sentences. They are called adverbs.
Though there are many types of adverbs, you will be learning one type that is helpful in expressing your emotional responses and reactions.
What’s New
One of the shared cultures among Asian countries is filial piety which is the respect given to parents and old people. This has been reflected in the Philippine culture in which young people treat their parents and old people with respect and politeness. Such respect has also been observed during the pandemic where society takes care and protects the senior citizens.
With that, check how you react to situations where old people are involved by doing the activity below.
Activity: Giving Reactions
The flowchart contains scenes from the Story of the Aged Mother, a Japanese tale written by Matsuo Basho. Give your reaction to the question after each scene by choosing strongly agree, agree, disagree, or strongly disagree. Write your answer on a separate sheet of paper.
[chart: flowchart; Giving Reactions activity, with six numbered scenes read in order 1 to 6]
A poor farmer loved and respected his old mother.
Do you agree that old people should be loved and respected?
☐ Strongly Agree ☐ Agree
☐ Strongly Disagree ☐ DisagreeHowever, the cruel governor of their place hated old and weak people for he found them to be useless. So, he ordered to kill them.
Do you agree that old people are useless for they are old and weak?
☐ Strongly Agree ☐ Agree
☐ Strongly Disagree ☐ DisagreeBut the son refused to follow the governor’s order and hid his old mother instead.
- Do you agree with what the son did?
☐ Strongly Agree ☐ Agree
☐ Strongly Disagree ☐ Disagree
- Do you agree with what the son did?
One day, the cruel governor demanded his people to present him a rope made of ashes.
- Do you agree that a leader can demand anything to his or her followers?
☐ Strongly Agree ☐ Agree
☐ Strongly Disagree ☐ Disagree
- Do you agree that a leader can demand anything to his or her followers?
No one knew how to do it except the old mother for she had learned about it a long time ago.
- Do you agree that experiences of old people can help the young ones?
☐ Strongly Agree ☐ Agree
☐ Strongly Disagree ☐ Disagree
- Do you agree that experiences of old people can help the young ones?
Because of her wisdom and experience, the people were saved, and the governor finally realized the value of old age.
- Do you agree that old age reflects wisdom and experience?
☐ Strongly Agree ☐ Agree
☐ Strongly Disagree ☐ Disagree
- Do you agree that old age reflects wisdom and experience?
What were your reactions to the events of the story? What have you realized from the story? Why should old people be respected and protected? In your own opinion, how do you show respect and love to your parents or your guardians?
Now, take note of the word strongly in the choices. This word is an adverb that emphasizes your reactions. You will learn more examples of this type and how to use them in this lesson.
What is It
In Lesson 1 and Lesson 2, you were introduced to using a range of verbs and adjectives in expressing your emotions and opinions. This time you will learn about adverbs.
The sentences below are based on the Story of the Aged Mother. Try to compare them and take note of their differences.
- I agree that old people must be respected and protected.
- I strongly agree that old people must be respected and protected.
- The farmer in the story was happy that her mother saved the people.
- The farmer in the story was really happy that her mother saved the people.
What is the difference between sentence 1 and sentence 2? How about sentence 3 and sentence 4? Which sentences sound more convincing to you?
Notice that sentences 2 contains the words “strongly”. This word gives a higher emotional degree on the verb agree. Also, take note that sentence 4 contains the word “really”. This word emphasizes that the happiness felt by the farmer is more intense than the happiness expressed in sentence 1.
The words “strongly” and “really” are examples of adverbs. They describe verbs, adjectives, and another adverb. There are many types of adverbs but in this lesson, you will focus on adverbs that can give emphasis on your responses and reactions. They are called adverbs of opinion.
ADVERBS OF OPINION
This type of adverbs emphasizes the intensity of your stand or opinion. They help clarify your belief about a certain issue.
The following are the commonly used adverbs of opinion:
| ADVERB | MEANING | ADVERB | MEANING |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fortunately | Owing to good luck or favor | Unfortunately | Unlucky or unfavored |
| Hopefully | Expressing desire or hope | Disappointingly | Unhappy because of failing to meet expectations |
| Clearly | Clear manner | Probably | likely to happen |
| Obviously/ Evidently | Very evident or easily seen | Surely/ Absolutely | In a sure manner or without a doubt |
| Strongly | Firmly grounded | Admiringly | In a way that shows respect or and approval |
| Truthfully/Truly | Telling the truth | Really/ Actually | In reality or emphasizing a point |
| Completely | Entirely or nothing is missing | Definitely | Exact or certain |
Take note on how some of the adverbs above are used in the following sentences:
Clearly, the farmer in the story loved her old mother. He showed this by protecting and hiding his mother from the cruel governor.
(The adverb clearly emphasizes that the farmer’s love to his old mother is very clear in the story. The adverb clearly is placed at the beginning of the sentence. This means that they can be placed at the beginning of sentences and are followed with a comma.)Minors and senior citizens must stay at home during the pandemic. We definitely need to follow this health measure to protect them.
(The adverb definitely emphasizes the stand of the speaker that he or she is certain that the health measure must be followed. The adverb definitely is placed before the verb need. This means that they can also be placed before the main verb.)Filipinos’ sense of respect to old people is evidently shown on how they protect and care for their old family members.
(The adverb evidently emphasizes the observation of the speaker that Filipinos’ sense of respect to old people is clearly seen on how they treat old family members. The adverb is placed in between the word are and doing. This means that they can be placed between an auxiliary verb and a main verb.)
Furthermore, adverbs of opinion can also be in a form of phrases. The table below shows some of the commonly used phrases that function as an adverb of opinion.
| From my view | To be frank | In fact | In my opinion | Without a doubt |
|---|
Take a look at how they are used in a sentence.
Filipinos are really respectful and polite to old people. Without a doubt, filial piety has been always part of our culture.
(The phrase without a doubt shows the firm feelings of the speaker that filial piety or respect to elders has always been a part of our culture. The phrase is placed at the beginning of the sentence. This means that they are usually placed at the beginning of a sentence and followed by a comma.)
Adverbs of opinion can also help emphasize the ideas in your paragraph especially if you want to convince readers about your opinion to an issue.
Observe how these adverbs of opinion are used together with the verbs and adjectives that you have learned in Lesson 1 and Lesson 2. Notice how the writer used them to convince the readers about the importance of eating healthy.
Without this, we are completely not safe from getting the deadly virus so why wait for this frightening moment to happen? Start eating nutritious food and motivate others to do the same.

Hence, sharing ideas with other people is important. This can actually help you enrich your knowledge. But you also need to remember that you have to be open-minded and respectful to the ideas shared to you. Being able to objectively understand the thoughts and emotions of other people is a good way to improve yourself.
Self – Check:
- Did you find all five (5) adverbs of opinion in the paragraph?
- Do you agree with the writer’s opinion that you need others to help you understand yourself and the world?

- But Nanay, can you just give me 30 minutes to play outside?
- No, Noel, I strongly disagree. You should follow what I tell you.
- So, what should I do now?
- I suggest you just play with your brother and sister, Jose and Nene, or you could join me pray for your Tatay’s safety since he is a frontliner.
- Okay, Nanay. I will join your pray for Tatay. I am glad to do that for him.
Illustrated by: Anselmo S. Osores Jr.
As reflected in their dialogue, obeying your parents or your guardian is important especially when their advice is meant to keep you safe. Doing this also shows your love and respect to them.
