English 8 Quarter 1 Module 2: Using Conventions in Citing Sources

English 8 Quarter 1 Module 2 teaches learners to cite books, periodicals, and online sources in a bibliography using the Chicago Manual of Style.

This is the English 8 Quarter 1 Module 2 self-learning module, Using Conventions in Citing Sources, from the Alternative Delivery Mode series of DepEd Caraga Region (First Edition, 2020). It is for Grade 8 learners studying at home or in class. It teaches why sources must be cited and how to write a correct bibliography for books, periodicals, and online sources.

The module covers one most essential learning competency: use conventions in citing sources (EN8SS-IIIg-1.6.4).

On this page 6 sections

What learners will learn

After working through the module, learners are expected to:

  1. define key concepts in bibliography writing;
  2. identify the bibliographic parts of a printed or online source;
  3. express the importance of citing sources; and
  4. use various conventions in citing sources.

What a bibliography is and why we cite sources

The word bibliography comes from two Greek words: biblion (book) and graphia (to write). A bibliography is an alphabetical list of the sources, such as books, periodicals, and websites, that a writer or researcher used. In a research paper it goes on a separate page at the end. Each entry uses a hanging indention, also called a second line indention.

The module gives four reasons to cite sources:

  • It gives credit to the authors.
  • It gives you and your reader more information about the sources.
  • It shows the writer’s credibility, meaning the sources used are reliable.
  • It prevents plagiarism, the act of stealing someone else’s ideas and presenting them as your own.

The module names three main citation styles: APA (American Psychological Association), used in the social and behavioral sciences; MLA (Modern Language Association), used for literature, theater, and film; and the Chicago Manual of Style, used in many academic fields, especially the humanities and social sciences. The module follows the Chicago Manual of Style, 17th Edition.

How to cite each type of source

The module divides sources into print sources (published in printed form) and online sources (any material taken from the internet, also called electronic, web, or internet sources). Here are the formats it teaches, with one of its own examples for each.

  • Book: Author’s last name and first name. Title of Book: Subtitle. Place of publication: Name of Publisher, Year of publication. Example: Cruz, Lourdes. Language and Literature: Grade 8 Learners’ Textbook. Quezon City: Cruz Publishing House, Inc., 2015.
  • Chapter in a book: Cruz, Lourdes. “South-East Asian Literature.” In Language and Literature: Grade 8 Learners’ Textbook, 30-47. Quezon City: Cruz Publishing House, Inc., 2015.
  • Journal (a scholarly periodical with articles by researchers, professors, and other experts): Martinez, Juana. “Distance Learning Amidst COVID-19.” Journal of Studies in Philippine Education 10, no. 2 (2019): 23.
  • Magazine (stories, essays, and pictures, usually weekly or monthly): Alisbo, Thea. “Finding New Hobbies in Time of Quarantine.” Young Mind Creatives, June 2020.
  • Newspaper (news, opinions, features, and ads, usually daily or weekly): Paran, Leo. “Filipino student bags trophy in International Quiz Bee.” Caraga Sinag Press, July 17, 2018.

For periodicals, the publication date is essential.

Online sources

  • Website: Author’s name. “Page Title.” Website Title, Published Date or Access Date. URL. Example: Orcullo, Ramon Jr. “Solid Faith.” Department of Education Caraga Region, June 2, 2020. http://caraga.deped.gov.ph/solid-faith/
  • E-book: cited like a printed book, with the format (Kindle, PDF, EPUB) or the URL added at the end.
  • Online journal: like a print journal, ending with the URL of the article page or the name of the database.
  • Online magazine and online newspaper: Author’s name. “Article Title.” Newspaper or Magazine Title, Month Day, Year. URL.

Tips on authors

  • List two or more authors in the order they appear in the source, not alphabetically.
  • For a source with more than ten authors, list only the first seven, followed by et al., a Latin phrase meaning “and others.”

How to use this module

The module follows the standard self-learning module parts:

  1. What I Know: a 15-item pretest. Note the items you missed and look for the answers as you go.
  2. What’s In: a short review of context clues from the previous lesson.
  3. What’s New and What is It: the sample book cover, the reasons for citing, and the citation formats above.
  4. What’s More: five activities: Label It (naming parts of sources), Solve that Puzzle (a crossword), Fill Me Out (completing citation formats), Let’s Practice (arranging details into entries), and Correct It! (finding errors in a bibliography).
  5. What I Have Learned: sentence completions to reflect on the lesson.
  6. What I Can Do: Task 1, Entry It Right, where you write and alphabetize a bibliography for a book, a journal article, and a website.
  7. Assessment: a 15-item post-test, then an Additional Activity where you choose three Asian tourist attractions and write a bibliography entry for each website.

For learners: Write all answers on a separate sheet of paper and do not mark the module. An answer key is at the end; use it honestly to check your work.

For parents: Help your child follow the parts in order and check answers only after each activity is done.

For teachers: Task 1 and the Additional Activity show whether learners can apply the conventions, including punctuation, hanging indention, and alphabetical order.

Lesson 1: Using Conventions in Citing Sources

In this module, you will learn about using conventions in citing sources. It is important to know about this topic to help you in your academic journey.

What’s In

In your past lesson, you learned about context clues and their types which help you sharpen your word-attack skills. Let us recall your knowledge by answering the short drill below.

Activity 1. Let’s Review

Directions: Read the sentences carefully and determine the meaning of the underlined word through context clues. Write the letter of your answer on a separate sheet of paper.

  1. In doing your research paper, you have to make sure that you use information taken from reliable sources.

    • A. common
    • C. trustworthy
    • B. intelligent
    • D. understandable
  2. Scholarly published articles are good sources of reliable information.

    • A. academically
    • C. timely
    • B. professionally
    • D. wisely
  3. If you have taken an information from a certain website, do not forget to cite it in your paper as your source.

    • A. acknowledge
    • C. discuss
    • B. appreciate
    • D. underline
  4. You can be easily accused of plagiarizing other author’s works if you will not cite your sources.

    • A. copying
    • C. robbing
    • B. repeating
    • D. stealing
  5. One way of citing your sources is to include a bibliography of these sources in a separate page of your research paper.

    • A. copy of other studies
    • C. worksheet of different sources
    • B. list of scientific research
    • D. list of related sources of information

Note that in the activity you have just answered, you came across with these phrases:

  • use information taken from reliable sources
  • cite your sources
  • include a bibliography of these sources

When doing a research or assignment, is it really important to use reliable information? Do we really need to cite the source of information? How will we do it?

What’s New

If you were asked to do a research work on stories of Filipino women, how will you find a reliable source of information about the topic? Will you search it on the internet or visit the library to find appropriate books? In doing so, do you closely look at the parts or details of the sources that you use?

This part of the module will lead you to an initial understanding of the importance of looking at the parts or details of a source. Look at the text below. Study and analyze it.

Perez, Belinda and Abuzo, Natalia. Proud Pinay: Inspirational Stories of Filipino Women. Cebu: Perlas Publishing House, 2006.

[illustration: cover of the book Proud Pinay: Inspirational Stories of Filipino Women by Belinda Perez and Natalia Abuzo, published by Perlas Publishing, Cebu City, Philippines; labels: Title, Subtitle, Author, Name of Publisher, Place Published]

  • What is the complete title of the book?
  • How many authors are there in the book?
  • What is the name of the publisher?
  • Where was the book published?

Illustration 1: Illustrated by the author. Names mentioned in the illustration are fictional.

In the previous part of the module, you saw an illustration of a cover page of a book and its parts. Do you think it is important to take note of these information and cite them in your research?

When you do your research, you need to cite or list your sources. Whenever you take specific facts, ideas, or quotations from a book, magazine, newspaper, or other sources, you make sure to cite the source.

Here are some important reasons why you need to cite or list the sources:

  • It gives credit to the authors.
  • It provides you and the reader with more information about the sources.
  • It shows the writer’s credibility, referring to whether his/her sources are reliable.
  • It prevents plagiarism, an act of stealing someone else’s ideas and presenting them as your own.

Look at the sample text inside the box. How many sources do you see? One way of citing your sources is through listing them on a separate page of your research paper. This page is what we call as a bibliography.

What is a Bibliography?

A bibliography is taken from the Greek word ‘biblion’, which means ‘book’ and ‘graphia’, which means ‘to write.’ A bibliography contains an alphabetical list of sources like books, periodicals, and websites used by the writer or researcher.

A research paper should contain a bibliography written on a separate page and should be located at the end of the paper. Each entry uses a hanging indention, also known as a second line indention.

There are many styles or formats in citing or listing sources, depending on the subject. The three main citation styles are the following:

The American Psychological Association (APA) Style which is used in social and behavioral sciences.

The Modern Language Association (MLA) Style which is used for writing papers on literature and related subjects like theater or film.

The Chicago Manual of Style (CMOS) which is often used in many academic fields, especially in the humanities and social sciences.

In this module, we will follow the bibliography annotation standard specified in Chicago Manual of Styles 17th Edition.

These are the print and online types or formats of sources of information:

A. Print Sources. These are sources that have been published in printed format, such as books and periodicals.

1. Books. These are the most common and reliable sources of information. This is the sample format of writing a book bibliography.
