This is the Grade 6 English Quarter 4 Module 2 self-learning module, “Compose Clear and Coherent Sentences Using Appropriate Grammatical Structures: Perfect Tenses of Verbs.” It is an Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) module from the Department of Education, Region VI (First Edition, 2020), written for Grade 6 learners studying at home. After working through it, learners should be able to form and use the present perfect, past perfect, and future perfect tenses to write clear, correct sentences.
What learners will learn
The module states that it will help learners:
- Compose clear and coherent sentences using appropriate grammatical structures: perfect tenses of verbs
- Gain knowledge and a better understanding of perfect tenses when used in sentences
- Appreciate visual images based on real-life situations
The module has one lesson: Lesson 1: Compose Clear and Coherent Sentences Using the Perfect Tenses of Verbs.
The three perfect tenses
The lesson opens with a short reading about Aningalan in San Remigio, known as the summer capital of Antique. Vanessa and her friends visit the place and explore Igbaclag Cave. The paragraph uses phrases such as have gone, have visited, have explored, has accompanied, had left, and will have returned. These are all examples of perfect tenses, and every perfect tense uses a form of “have” plus the past participle of the verb.
| Tense | How it is formed | Common signal words | Example from the module |
|---|---|---|---|
| Present perfect | has/have + past participle | for, since | A tourist guide has accompanied them since the first day of their tour. |
| Past perfect | had + past participle | before, after, when | When they had left for the city, they realized the value and importance of nature. |
| Future perfect | will/shall have + past participle | before, by, by the time, by then, by the end of | By next year, they will have returned to the place together with their families. |
Present perfect tense
Use has with a singular subject (“Sheila has worked as a nurse for a year now”). Use have with a plural subject and with I or you (“Sheila and Maricel have worked as nurses since 2015″; “I have practiced my profession as a nurse for a year now”).
This tense shows an action that happened at an indefinite time in the past, or one that began in the past and continues up to the present. For tells how long the action has lasted. Since tells when it started.
Past perfect tense
The past perfect shows an action that was already finished before another past action, or before a specific time in the past. The earlier action takes the past perfect; the later one takes the simple past. Had is used for both singular and plural subjects. Example: “Sheila had worked as a nurse before she went abroad.”
Future perfect tense
The future perfect shows an action that will be completed before another future action or before a set point in the future. Will have or shall have works with any subject. Examples: “Sheila and Maricel shall have worked as nurses by the end of next year” and “I will have worked as a nurse by the time my father retires from work.”
Activities in the module
- What I Know (pretest): Choose the correct verb to complete 10 sentences about a family saving for their children’s education.
- What’s In: Identify whether each underlined verb is in the present perfect, past perfect, or future perfect tense.
- What’s New and What is It: The Aningalan reading, followed by the explanation of the three tenses.
- What’s More: Choose the correct perfect form in sentences about a father’s vegetable garden.
- What I Have Learned: A summary of how each perfect tense is formed.
- What I Can Do: Multiple-choice sentences, for example “I (have been, has been, will have been) to Boracay by next year.”
- Assessment: Rewrite 10 sentences about helping victims in the community, using and underlining the correct perfect tense.
- Additional Activities: Build your own sentences from prompts such as “The firemen (arrive/past perfect).”
How to use this module
Learners: Start with the pretest to see what you already know. Then go through the parts in order. Write all your answers on a separate sheet of paper, not on the module. Check your work with the answer key at the end only after you finish each activity, and be honest when you use it. Watch for the signal words (for, since, before, by the time) because they often show which tense a sentence needs.
Parents and facilitators: Help your child read the directions carefully. If the child has trouble with a task, the module asks them to consult their teacher or facilitator.
Teachers: The answer key covers every activity. A few printed answers seem to need checking before you use them for grading. For example, pretest item 2 lists “started” instead of a perfect form, and Additional Activities item 5 lists “has finished” for a past perfect prompt. For the Additional Activities, the key notes that learners’ sentences may vary.

What’s New
Have you gone to a place which captured your interest? Come, let’s visit Antique and explore the beauty of Aningalan.
[photo: a large grey rock formation with spiky, eroded surfaces above green grass]
Aningalan in San Remigio is known as the summer capital of Antique. Many people who have gone there admire its peaceful atmosphere. Vanessa and her friends have visited the place as well. They have explored Igbaclag Cave for almost an hour. It is famous for its beautiful rock formation. A tourist guide has accompanied them since the first day of their tour. They loved the scenic beauty of the mountains which seemed to meet the blue skies. What they enjoyed most was the cool climate of the place. When they had left for the city, they realized the value and importance of nature. They promised themselves that by summer next year, they will have returned to the place together with their families.
What is It
Now, read again the paragraph above and take note of the following phrases.
- have gone
- have visited
- have explored
- has accompanied
- had left
- will have returned
The phrases used above are examples of Perfect Tenses of Verbs. Perfect Tenses of verbs are of three kinds.
I. The Present Perfect Tense is made up of has/have plus the past participle form of the verb.
A. Has + past participle form of the verb is used when the subject is singular.
Examples:
- A tourist guide has accompanied them since the first day of their tour.
- Sheila has worked as a nurse for a year now.
B. Have + past participle form of the verb is used when the subject is plural. It is also used when the subject is I or You.
Examples:
- They have explored Igbaclag Cave for almost an hour.
- Sheila and Maricel have worked as nurses since 2015.
- I have practiced my profession as a nurse for a year now.
- You have worked as a nurse since 2015.
In present perfect tense, we refer to an action or state that happened or occurred at an indefinite time in the past or something that began in the past and continued up to the present. With present perfect tense, we also use the expressions for and since. For is used to express the duration of the action and since is used to indicate the starting point of the action.
II. The Past Perfect Tense indicates an action that had already happened at some point in the past (which is expressed through the past perfect form of the verb) before another action took place (that is expressed in simple past form of the verb). It also refers to actions that were completed before certain or specific time in the past. The Past Perfect Tense is formed by using the past tense of “to have” which is had + past participle form of the verb. This is applicable for either singular or plural subject.
Examples:
- When they had left for the city, they realized the value and importance of nature.
- Sheila had worked as a nurse before she went abroad.
- After Sheila and Maricel had passed the nursing licensure examination, they applied for work.
- I had worked as a nurse when the COVID 19 pandemic started.
- You had worked as a nurse before I met you.
In the past perfect tense, the expressions before, after and when are used.
III. The Future Perfect Tense is a verb tense used with an action that will be completed sometime in the future before another future action will take place or before a specified point in the future. It is formed by using will/shall have + the past participle form of the verb with either singular or plural subject.
Examples:
- By next year, they will have returned to the place together with their families.
- Sheila will have worked as a nurse here before she goes abroad.
- Sheila and Maricel shall have worked as nurses by the end of next year.
- I will have worked as a nurse by the time my father retires from work.
- You shall have worked as a nurse by then.
In the Future Perfect Tense expressions like before, by, by the time, by then and by the end of are used.
