Grade 6 English Quarter 4 Module 3: Past, Present and Future Progressive Tenses

This is the Grade 6 English Quarter 4 Module 3 self-learning module (SLM), “Composing Clear and Coherent Sentences Using Past, Present and Future Progressive Tenses of the Verb.” It is an Alternative Delivery Mode module, First Edition 2020, developed by DepEd Region VI – Western Visayas for learners studying at home. After working through it, learners can recognize progressive verbs and use them to describe actions more vividly in their own writing.

What learners will learn

The module states that learners will be able to:

  • define and describe the past, present and future progressive tenses of the verb;
  • identify past, present and future progressive tenses of the verb in a sentence; and
  • compose clear and coherent sentences using appropriate grammatical structures: past, present and future progressive tenses of the verb.

What a progressive tense is

A progressive tense describes an ongoing action. It shows an action happening at the time it is being mentioned. Like simple and perfect tenses, progressive verbs come in three tenses: past, present and future.

The module starts with these example sentences about Maria:

Past progressivePresent progressiveFuture progressive
Maria was reading a novel when her mother called. At this moment, Maria is reading a novel.Marie will be reading a novel before dinner.
She was drinking cold water when Boyblue sneezed beside her.She is drinking cold water right now.She will be drinking cold water later.
Pinky and Aria were singing when Ate Elay showed up.Presently, Pinky and Aria are singing.Pinky and Aria will be singing by the time their recognition comes.

How to form each progressive tense

Present progressive tense

This tense shows an action that is happening at the moment of speaking or writing. Common time expressions are at this time, presently, now, right now, at this moment and currently.

SubjectPattern
First person singularI + am + verb-ing (am studying)
Third person singularHe/She/It + is + verb-ing (is walking)
Plural, and second person singularWe/You/They + are + verb-ing (are dancing)

Example: Maria Fe and Imee are writing on the board now.

Past progressive tense

This tense shows two things:

  1. An action that was going on in the past when another past action happened. Example: I was writing on the board when our teacher came.
  2. Actions happening at the same time in the past. Example: As our teacher was explaining, we were taking notes.

It often uses the time expressions while, when, as and before. The pattern is subject + was + verb-ing for a singular subject, and subject + were + verb-ing for a plural subject.

Future progressive tense

This tense shows an action that will continue to happen in the future. It uses time expressions such as later, when, this afternoon, this time tomorrow, soon and next week. For any subject, singular or plural, the pattern is subject + will/shall + be + verb-ing.

Example: This time tomorrow, Maria Fe and Imee will be presenting their research to the teachers.

The module also gives a long list of regular verbs (adding, baking, donating, harvesting) and irregular verbs (beginning, bringing, eating, swimming, writing) in all three progressive forms, which learners can use as a quick reference.

Parts of the module

  • What I Know: a pretest. Learners pick out the progressive verbs in five sentences, then label each as past, present or future progressive.
  • What’s In: a review of simple present, past and future tenses, then a fill-in activity using given tense cues.
  • What’s New and What is It: the example sentences, the explanation and the verb lists.
  • What’s More: fifteen fill-in sentences, five for each progressive tense.
  • What I Have Learned: a short summary of the three tenses.
  • What I Can Do: choosing the correct progressive verb from three options.
  • Assessment: completing sentences with progressive verbs, then naming the tense of each answer.
  • Additional Activities: writing five sentences on the theme “How to control the spread of COVID-19” using given verbs and tenses (for example, wash in the future progressive, pray in the present progressive).
  • Answer Key: answers for every activity, with sample sentences for the writing task.

How to use this module

  • Learners: Start with the pretest, then go through the parts in order. Write all answers on a separate sheet of paper and do not mark the module. When you finish, check your own work with the answer key honestly, and do not change your answers.
  • Parents and facilitators: The module includes notes for facilitators and parents on how to support home learning. Help your child read the directions carefully and ask the teacher when a task is unclear.
  • Teachers: The What’s More and Assessment sets work well as practice or quick checks. The COVID-19 writing task shows whether learners can compose their own sentences, not just fill in blanks.

Frequently asked questions

What grade and quarter is this module for?

It is for Grade 6 English, Quarter 4. It is Module 3 of the quarter.

What is a progressive tense?

A progressive tense describes an ongoing action, one happening at the time it is mentioned. It is formed with a form of be (am, is, are, was, were, or will be) plus the verb ending in -ing.

How do I form the future progressive tense?

Use subject + will/shall + be + verb-ing, for example, I will be writing on the board later. The same pattern works for singular and plural subjects.

Does the module have an answer key?

Yes. The answer key covers every activity, from the pretest to the assessment, and gives sample sentences for the additional writing activity.

When should I use was and when should I use were?

Use was with a singular subject (She was drinking) and were with a plural subject (Pinky and Aria were singing).
