Empowerment Technologies Quarter 1 Module 7: Imaging and Design for Basic Image Manipulation

This is the Empowerment Technologies Quarter 1, Module 7 self-learning module for Senior High School: Imaging and Design for Basic Image Manipulation. It has one lesson that teaches learners to edit photos with GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program), a free, open-source image editor. By the end, learners create an edited image and a campaign material related to their chosen track and strand.

What learners will learn

The module targets this learning competency:

  • Create an original or derivative ICT content to effectively communicate a visual message in an online environment related to specific professional tracks (CS_ICT11/12-ICTPT-Ie-f-8).

After the module, learners are expected to:

  1. understand basic image manipulation;
  2. tell apart the other functions and tools used in basic image manipulation; and
  3. create an edited image using the basic tools of an image editor.

Lesson in this module

  • Lesson 1: Basic Image Manipulation (Online, Offline and Open Source Software). Learners meet the three kinds of image editors, learn the parts of the GIMP window, and practice opening images, selecting areas, painting, adding text, and saving their work.

Image editors and the parts of GIMP

An image editor is a software application for editing and enhancing photos. The module names three kinds:

KindExample in the module
Online applicationCanva
Offline softwareAdobe Creative Suite
Open sourceGIMP, SketchUp (formerly Google SketchUp)

Common image file formats you can use are JPEG (JPG), TIFF, GIF, and PNG. GIMP saves its own work in the XCF format by default.

The GIMP window has three main parts:

  • Toolbox: holds the tools for editing and enhancing images.
  • Layers window: holds the layers of an image, which combine with one another.
  • Work area: where you do the actual editing.

Basic GIMP techniques

The module walks through four core skills:

  1. Opening an image. Click File > Open (or press Ctrl + O), find the folder where your image is saved, and click Open.
  2. Select tools. Found in the toolbox, these let you pick the part of an image you want to edit. The module shows the Rectangle Select, Ellipse Select (for circles and ovals), and Free Select tools, plus the Crop tool.
  3. Paintbrush tool. Choose the paintbrush, then click and hold the left mouse button while drawing. Change the color through the foreground color.
  4. Text tool. Lets you create, edit, and display text on an image. Its icon is a large letter A.

To save, go to File > Save As and choose a folder. The module also notes that you can delete a layer in the layers window and edit text with the text editor.

The module includes a table describing every tool in the GIMP toolbox, with shortcuts for many of them. A few examples:

  • Fuzzy Select: selects a connected region based on color.
  • Select by Color (Shift + O): selects regions with similar colors.
  • Bucket Fill (Shift + B): fills a selected area with a color or pattern.
  • Eraser (Shift + E): erases to the background or transparency.
  • Rotate (Shift + R), Scale (Shift + S), Flip (Shift + F): change the layer, selection, or path.
  • Healing: fixes image irregularities.
  • Dodge/Burn (Shift + D): lightens or darkens parts of an image.

Activities and output

  • Activity 1.1 Capture the Moment! Take a photo with your smartphone to use for editing.
  • Activity 1.2 Text Tool. Use that photo as a background and make a quotation or meme picture with the Text tool. Save it as SURNAME, FIRST NAME_SECTION.
  • What I Have Learned. Answer two questions: the advantages of GIMP and its other uses.
  • What I Can Do: Building Up. Make a flyer, poster, or infographic campaign material about your track and strand, then post it on Facebook to gather feedback. It is graded on color and font, layout, and sourcing (citing your picture sources), at 10, 8, or 5 points each.
  • Additional Activities: Guess the Icon. Name five GIMP toolbox icons from a list of choices.

How to use this module

  • Learners: Start with the 15-item pretest (What I Know), then read the lesson, do the activities in order, and finish with the 15-item Assessment. Write answers on a separate sheet, not on the module. You need a computer with GIMP for the hands-on tasks.
  • Parents: Help your child find time on a computer and a phone camera, and check that they follow the instructions for naming and saving files.
  • Teachers: The Notes to the Teacher say GIMP can be downloaded free from the official GIMP website and installed on a computer. Share your own rubric for the Building Up output, since the module says learners follow the teacher’s rubric. An answer key for the pretest, Assessment, and Additional Activities is at the end; check Assessment items 10 and 15 against the choices, as the printed letters do not match the correct options (the correct answers are D, Text Tool, and B, Tool Bar).

Frequently asked questions

What grade level is this Empowerment Technologies module for?

It is a Senior High School module for Quarter 1, and its competency code (CS_ICT11/12) covers Grades 11 and 12.

What software does the module use?

Introductory Message

This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our dear learners, can continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities, questions, directions, exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you to understand each lesson.

Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you step-by-step as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.

Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in each SLM. This will tell you if you need to proceed on completing this module or if you need to ask your facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for better understanding of the lesson. At the end of each module, you need to answer the post-test to self-check your learning. Answer keys are provided for each activity and test. We trust that you will be honest in using these.

In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teacher are also provided to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on how they can best help you on your home-based learning.

Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any part of this SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises and tests. And read the instructions carefully before performing each task.

If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in answering the tasks in this module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator.

Thank you.

Lesson 1 Basic Image Manipulation

An image editor is a software application that allows the photo to be edited and enhanced. It can be an online application (www.canva.com), offline software (Adobe Creative Suite) and open source (GIMP software and SketchUp – formerly Google SketchUp). The image file format that can be used are JPEG or JPG, TIFF, GIF and PNG.
