This self-learning module is for Senior High School learners taking Contemporary Philippine Arts from the Regions. Quarter 1, Module 2, “Contemporary Arts in the Philippines,” has one lesson, Lesson 2: Art: Meaning and Forms. It explains what contemporary art is, how it differs from modern art, what integrative art means, and which features make contemporary Philippine art distinct. It was produced by DepEd National Capital Region (First Edition, 2020) under the Alternative Delivery Mode and can be used in school or at home.
What learners will learn
The module covers three connected topics: contemporary art, integrative art, and contemporary art forms from the Philippine regions. After going through it, learners are expected to:
- define contemporary arts
- explain integrative art
- infer integrative art in contemporary art
- identify and classify the contemporary art forms from the Philippine regions
Key ideas: contemporary art and modern art
The module starts from things learners pass every day: billboards, jeepney signs, street murals, outdoor sculptures, and street dance. It argues that these, along with home decor, the way food is cooked, and the design of buildings, make up the “art of today.”
- Contemporary art is art of any form and genre produced in our own time, or simply “art created today.” The module places it from the late 20th century to the present.
- Modern art is different. It runs from the end of the 19th century until the 1970s or 1980s. The two differ in history and in context.
- Contemporary art is shaped by the economic, social, political, and environmental context around the artist. It expresses how the artist sees and understands that context.
- A genre is a category of artistic creation, grouped by similarities in form, style, or subject matter.
Examples of contemporary art forms
| Art form | Examples from the module |
|---|---|
| Visual arts | Pop art, word art, conceptual art, installation art, photorealism, contemporary realism, graffiti art |
| Performance arts | Music (blues, hip-hop, jazz, rock, and more), theater (stage, film, street play), dance (flash mob, street dance) |
| Applied arts | Video art, photography, computer art, film and broadcasting, architecture and design |
| Literary arts | Illustrated novel, digi-fiction, graphic novels, manga, doodle fiction, text-talk novels, chick literature, flash fiction, hyper poetry, blog |
Key ideas: elements, integrative art, and Philippine features
Elements of contemporary art (PATHS)
The module offers the memory aid PATHS for these five elements:
- Performance: carried out for viewers to experience
- Appropriation: the changes the artist makes
- Technology: its use highlights the artist’s creativity
- Hybridity: different art mediums put together
- Space: careful, intricate use of space
Integrative art
When these elements are combined, the result is integrative art. It is a fusion of different art disciplines, styles, and media. It is often found in urban areas, where artists have ready access to many media. The module’s examples include computer applications combined with other media, and non-traditional materials used in mixed art forms. Junk art, a sculpture made from discarded materials such as scrap plastic, cartons, paper, metal, or glass, is given as a clear example.
Distinct features of contemporary Philippine art (CHIMIC)
Contemporary Philippine artists come from all regions of Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. They often use materials available where they live. The module lists six features, remembered as CHIMIC:
- Communal: reflects bonds of community and society
- Holistic: sees people, groups, and events in their entirety
- Intuitive: rooted in Filipinos’ awareness of self, community, and culture
- Multi-focal: considers the wide view of the work, both artist and viewer
- Integrative: covers religious, moral, spiritual, social, and environmental concerns
- Creative process: stresses how the work was made more than the work itself
The module also stresses that viewers take part in contemporary art, that there are no fixed standards for creating it, and that viewers appreciate it best by using all their senses.
How to use this module
The module follows the usual parts: What I Need to Know, What I Know (pretest), What’s In, What’s New, What is It, What’s More, What I Have Learned, What I Can Do, Assessment, Additional Activities, and the Answer Key.
- Learners: Answer the 15-item pretest first. If you get all items right, you may skip the module. Write all answers on separate sheets, not on the module. Finish each task before moving on, check your work honestly with the answer key, and return the module to your teacher when done.
- Activities to prepare for: In What I Can Do, you gather unused or discarded materials at home (metal, wood, plastic, paper, dried leaves, pebbles) and make a sculpture using paste, glue, tape, or leftover paint. You then record its art form, title, and your reflection, and send a photo to your teacher and five classmates. The additional activity asks you to take photos at home with a mobile phone, choose your best three, and write a title and reflection.
- Parents: Prepare writing, drawing, and coloring materials and short bond paper ahead of time.
- Teachers: Orient learners on using the module, track their progress, and cite well-known Filipino artists, dance groups, and musicians to help learners connect with the subject. Set the time frame for the sculpture task, and keep any social media posts visible only to selected classmates to avoid bashing.

Contemporary Philippine Arts from the Regions Quarter 1 – Module 2 Contemporary Arts in the Philippines
Senior High School
Introductory Message
For the facilitator:
Arts have been a part of our lives since our childhood. The ramifications of the Arts have grown and have expanded to encompass so many aspects of our lives. As such, the Arts have been and will always be a part of our lives.
The learner and the learner’s family need to be aware of the fact that they get to encounter and to appreciate the Arts almost daily. It has embedded itself in our society and it has become part of their lives. They need to know and, more importantly, to understand the Arts. Having knowledge and understanding of it should not be shunned as another useless “add on” to the learning burden of the learner. Rather, it is essential in knowing and understanding oneself.
Module 2 is made with these in mind. This module can be used in school and at home as it can stand alone or be part of a continuum of lessons in enhancing one’s knowledge of the contemporary arts and integrated art forms. Contemporary Philippine Arts from the Regions is a subject that will enhance the understanding of what is already known by both learner and parents. It is important that writing, drawing and coloring materials are prepared ahead so that it would be easier to facilitate the activities. Short bond papers should be prepared. The learner should be told to use separate sheets in answering the pre-test, self-check exercises, and post-test.
Notes to the Teacher
Most of the students have little or limited interest at all with Art in its general sense. It is important that the students get convinced that the Arts in different forms are everywhere and that they are part of their daily lives. Well known contemporary artists, dance groups and musicians can be cited to enable the students to “get connected” and interested with Philippine Contemporary Arts.
As a facilitator, you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this module. You also need to keep track of the learners’ progress while allowing them to manage their own learning. Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and assist the learners as they do the tasks included in the module.
For the learner:
Drawings, picture-collages and paper arts have been part of your education since you were a child. You will know and understand the Arts more in this subject, Contemporary Philippine Arts from the Regions.
Module 2 will let you distinguish forms of contemporary art from the different regions of the country and discover the conglomeration of other art forms integrated together to come up with contemporary art truly distinct and Filipino. Integrative art can be found in contemporary art. Filipino artists are adept in creating artworks from different materials, both traditional and non-traditional. Different elements and forms are integrated to create contemporary Philippine art.
To accomplish this, you need to have your own materials for writing and drawing. This module allows you to follow through its content through orderly and developmental steps. As you go along, you will discover that this is like an interactive game where you do and learn things at the same time. Take this, read it, learn from it, and enjoy it.

Lesson 2: Art: Meaning and Forms
Different kinds of local artworks have sprung not only in the urban centers of the country and in schools of arts of different educational institutions but also a lot more of never before seen or heard art forms from the countryside have made known and have become renowned. The seeming isolation and distance of many communities in far flung regions have kept the beauty and significance of countless forms of Philippine art. It is real good news that they have been exposed and have been expressed.
What’s In
Contemporary Philippine Arts from the Regions is not just a subject that has to be learned. It wants Contemporary Philippine Arts to be viewed, to be understood and to be appreciated in the context as they were created. As mentioned in the previous module, the arts come in various categories and forms.
It is essential to know and understand the meaning of the term contemporary when used in defining Contemporary Philippine Arts. Understanding it would pave the way for better appreciation of the arts in the Philippine context. Understanding Philippine Arts would provide a better perception of the details, context, meaning and significance of the artworks placed in a cultural, political and historical context.
It is also important to differentiate Modern Philippine Arts from Contemporary Philippine Arts. It would be easy to misunderstand the two by treating them as interchangeably the same. The recent years revealed a conglomeration or mix of different art forms and art media that are expressions of the times where we live in. Many art forms are integrated to create artworks that are quite different from Classical and Modern Arts. Integrative Art has become part of Contemporary Art. Contemporary Art is evident when we go to the different regions and provinces of our country. Each artwork exhibiting its own uniqueness and meaning.
What’s New
People get out of their houses to go to school, to work or to buy something. Almost all of them are unmindful of their surroundings as they seldom pay attention to the daily usual sights and sounds. They all come back home with same circumstances. The signages, billboards, music, pictures and other similar visual and auditory presentations have become a conglomeration of perceived mundane elements of daily life. Thus, the beauty, relevance, significance and implications of these otherwise monotonous external stimuli are seldom comprehended and appreciated.
Let’s imagine that you will be going out of your house and come across the following pictures. Give the questions some thought and answer them truthfully.

What is It
The pictures presented in the previous activity are depictions of the artworks that are seen today. Present day art has a lot of variety. There are various expressions Philippine art that can be found right inside our homes and are found everywhere. The arrangement of furniture, home décor, the way a mother cooks a particular kind of food to the jeepney designs and signages, architecture of buildings, billboard designs and other unnoticed works of art, comprise the “art of today.”
The artworks and styles of the past have evolved and have adapted to a dynamic changing world, a world immersed in the latest technology and emerging ideologies. These artworks and styles are created, witnessed and experienced in our lifetime by artists and style experts catering to Millennial and Gen Z viewers, and techy clientele. These artworks are collectively known as Contemporary Art.
The term contemporary has been defined as something “happening, existing, living, or coming into being during the same period of time” (Merriam-Webster). Assuming this definition, Contemporary Art refers to art of any form and genre that produced in our contemporary time, simply put as “art created today.” It should not be confused with Modern Art which ranges from the end of the 19th Century until the 1970’s or 1980’s or the late 20th Century. It will put Contemporary Art from the late 20th Century to the present. Modern Art differs from Contemporary Art historically and contextually.
Contemporary Art
Contemporary Art is influenced by the economic, social, political and environmental context where the artist is immersed in. It can be said that Contemporary Art is the artist’s expression of his perception and comprehension of these contexts. Contemporary Arts in the Philippines is as diverse as our people. Genres are categories of artistic creation and are characterized by similarities in form, style, or subject matter. Many other genres came up which include pure are forms as well as mixed art forms. The following are examples from each art form:

With the use of your mobile phone camera, take pictures inside or around your house at any time of the day.
Make sure that the subject of the picture, that is, the thing, place, object or person that you want to take a picture of, is something or someone that will evoke some degree of interest and emotion from the viewer.
Take several pictures that will serve as your choices for the final three pictures that you deem are the best.
After choosing you three best pictures, think of a title and compose a brief description and reflection about them.
Present these top three choices with your write up by posting them on your social media wall and make sure that these are visible only to your teacher and five selected classmates to avoid bashing.
