On this page 7 sections
What learners will learn
After going through this module, learners are expected to:
- towel dry hair according to service requirements;
- comb hair in accordance with the service requirements;
- use appropriate tools and implements according to salon standards;
- blow dry according to service requirements and salon standard procedures;
- apply finishing products to blow-dried hair according to the manufacturer’s instructions or product specifications; and
- ensure the client’s safety and comfort during the entire process.
Tools, supplies, and key terms
The module describes the brushes, tools, and supplies used in a blow-drying service:
- Straightening brush: a heated brush that flat irons hair as you run it from root to end. It suits all hair types.
- Smoothing brush: for styling and smoothing unruly hair, such as a sleek ponytail or bun.
- Detangling comb: removes knots and tangles quickly and without pain.
- Hairbrush: smooths, styles, and detangles hair. It can be used with a curling iron or hair dryer.
- Backwash, styling chair, and salon gown or apron: for client comfort and to protect clothes.
- Blower: blows ambient or hot air over damp hair to dry it faster.
- Towel, neck strip, and protective gloves: supplies for drying, client protection, and protecting hands when working with hazardous chemicals.
The module also names five blow styling techniques:
| Technique | What it means |
|---|---|
| Blow waving | Shaping hair into waves with heated air and combs, brushes, or hands |
| Blow drying | Drying hair with a handheld dryer |
| Scrunch drying | Gripping and squeezing clumps of hair while directing heated air into the hand |
| Finger or hand drying | Lifting, teasing, pulling, and directing hair with the fingers or hands |
| Blow-combing | Drying and shaping with a comb or a comb attachment on the dryer |
How to blow dry hair
The module introduces the tension method, which reduces the heat and handling you put on hair.
Preparing to dry: wash the hair, towel dry it, apply heat protectant and other products, then clip the hair into manageable sections and brush the loose hair.
Drying: choose the right dryer and set it to medium or low heat. Separate a section with the brush and pull it taut. Aim the dryer at the hair on the brush. Then remove the top clip, pull the top hair forward, and target the roots.
For straight hair: dry until about 80 percent dry, dry the lower layers first with the nozzle pointed down, dry the top layers, then shape the ends and set them with cold air.
For curly hair: use a dryer of about 1,400 watts on low or medium settings with a concave diffuser. Layer a leave-in conditioner, gel, and a finisher. Diffuse at the roots, and smooth with a little pomade at the end.
The module also covers common blow-dry mistakes, such as starting with the brush too soon, skipping heat protectant on the back of the head, and starting from the back of the head. It gives tips like holding the dryer about 12 inches (30 cm) away to rough dry and finishing with a blast of cool air.
Finishing products
- Serum: adds moisture and shine. Use sparingly on fine hair.
- Mousse: light to firm hold. Apply to wet hair.
- Gel: firm hold for short textured or spiky finishes. Apply to wet hair.
- Wax: texture and light hold on dry hair. Not suitable for very fine hair.
- Blow-dry lotions and creams: protect from heat and humidity. Apply to wet hair.
- Heat protectors: add a protective layer before heated styling.
- Hair spray: holds the style. Apply sparingly at about 20 cm.
- Finishing sprays or gloss: add shine. Check the floor afterward, because spilled product can be slippery.
Safety and sanitation
The module lists sanitary and safety precautions. These include:
- Sanitize tools between clients.
- Give the client a gown and towel.
- Never use electrical equipment with wet hands.
- Never use faulty equipment.
- Test the dryer’s heat first and direct hot air away from the scalp.
- Do not overstretch hair.
- Wash towels after every use to prevent cross contamination.
How to use this module
- Answer the 10-item pretest (What I Know) on a separate sheet to check what you already know.
- Do What’s In, which asks you to arrange pictures showing how to rinse a client’s hair, and the word search in What’s New.
- Study the lesson, then do the activities in What’s More: arrange the steps of a towel wrap, complete the Think It Over sentences, and answer the True or False items.
- Complete What I Have Learned, then What I Can Do. There, you demonstrate blow drying with a partner, who rates you using the rubrics.
- Take the final Assessment and do the Additional Activities.
For learners: write on separate paper, not on the module, and use the answer key honestly.
For parents: help your child find a partner and a safe space with dry hands and a working dryer for the practical task.
For teachers: the performance rubric scores patron preparation, attire, tools, technique, finishing products, and safety.

How to Get more Volume when Blowing the Hair?
- Start by applying a volumizing spray onto your hair and roots.
- Then flip your head over and use the blow dryer
- When you flip your head back up, you’ll have added volume
- Another option is putting in a few pin curls clips at your roots and then using the blow dryer on a low setting.
- Manage your ends
The ends of your hair are the most susceptible to damage and frizzy, so paying special attention to how they are styled can really improve your look. - Apply a mist of shine spray or a drop of shine serum for a glossy look.
- Tamp down unruly hair with some styling cream or hair gel.
- Set your hair into place using the cool setting on your hair dryer
Things you’re doing wrong when blow drying your hair to air dry.
- Some blow-dry mistakes could cause your hair to look dry or frazzled.
- You should be blow-drying your hair from root to tip
- You should avoid passing over hair that’s already dry.
8 mistakes in making when you blow-dry your hair
- You don’t have a great blow-dryer
- You’re spending too long with your hair wrapped in a towel
- You start in with the brush too soon
- You forget to spray heat protectant on the back of your head.
- You ignore the concentrator nozzle attachment
- You’re using the wrong brush
- You start drying from the back of the head
- You want volume, don’t give your roots extra attention
Other tips to Blow Drying Your Hair (Method 1)
- Comb out any tangles using your fingers or a wide-toothed comb
- Soak up any excess moisture with a towel
- Consider letting your hair air dry part-way before you use a hairdryer.
- Hold the hairdryer about 12 inches (30 cm) away from your hair to rough dry.
- Point the nozzle downwards when you blow dry your hair.
- Use your fingers to keep your hair smooth while your blow dries it.
- Consider using a vented round brush to make your hair straight.
- Finish your look by giving your hair a blast of cool air.
Using the Right Products (Method 2)
Apply a leave-in conditioner to the ends of your hair. Use a tiny bit of argan oil, jojoba oil, or shine serum on your hair before you blow dry it. Use a heat protection spray before your blow dry your hair. Try getting a nozzle attachment for your hairdryer if you have straight hair. Try getting a diffuser attachment for your hairdryer if you have curly hair.
Straight Hair
Step 1:
- After toweling off wet hair, set your dryer on medium heat and high air speed. Blow hair until its 80 percent dry.
- Gather the hair on top of your crown and secure it with a clip. Begin drying the lower layers with a brush, using more heat. Point the dryer’s nozzle downward to help smooth hair and create shine.
Step2: Dry top layers
- Remove the clip and use it to hold the now-dry lower layers back and away. Twist and clip them into a bun to add waves, or secure like a very loose, low ponytail for a straighter look.
- Blow-dry the top section. Aim at the roots to add volume, then work toward the ends, using the brush to pull hair forward and out.
Step 3: Shape Ends and Finish
- Remove the clip. Flip all hair back. Part and dry hair around the forehead.
- To curl ends, roll them under with a round brush, blast with heat, and set with cold air. For a straight finish, pull the brush through while drying ends with warm air; set with cold air. Apply styling cream to tamp down fly-a-ways, or mist with hair spray
To Blow-Dry Curly Hair
Get the Tools
- The right dryer: Don’t distort curls with too much power—1,400 watts is enough, that’s according to a salon owner in New York City and Santa Monica, USA. Curls don’t call for a high temperature, either. Stick with the low and medium settings for temperature and air.
- Diffuser: This is the crucial component for creating soft, fuzz-free curls. Look for a design that’s concave in the middle (not flat). This allows curls to rest inside and take a natural shape
Layer your products
Conditioner First apply a creamy leave-in conditioner to keep moisture in strands as you dry them.
Gel Next, use a gel to define curls and help set them in place. A gel also prevents frizz.
Finisher After drying, use a product to hydrate ends and add shine and hold.
Step 1: Apply Leave-in and Gel
After applying a leave-in conditioner through wet (but not sopping) strands, flip most of your hair to one side. With your fingers, work the gel into four manageable sections, from roots down to tips, evenly distributing it around your head. Finally, hold the ends, shake your hands from side to side, and then release to allow curls to spring back up to the roots.
Step 2: Diffuse at the roots
- Set your dryer to low or medium heat and medium speed.
- Place the diffuser right at the roots, starting at the nape of your neck. Gently hold ends away from the dryer, letting them dry naturally (blow-drying curly ends, which tend to be dehydrated, makes them frizzy). Move the diffuser around until all roots are dry.
Step 3: Smooth and Finish
- Put a pea-size drop of pomade on your palm and rub your hands together.
- Grasp your hair in front, as if you were sweeping it into a ponytail, and run your hands from the hairline to the ends. Then let the curls go. This will help break up any gel crunchiness. Massage your scalp at the roots to add fullness.
Techniques used in blow-drying will be dependent on required finished style.
- Step 1: Ensure hair is wet at start of service
- Step 2: Use the correct products for hair classification / type
- Step 3: Apply products in logical sequence and appropriate to the service
- Step 4: Use tools that are appropriate for the finish
- Step 5: Use correct size of brush for hair length to create finish
- Step 6: Use additional electrical attachments or equipment, e.g. using diffuser attachment to enhance natural curl
- Step 7: Ensure hair is dry once finished
- Step 8: Be time and cost effective
Know how to blow – dry and finish hair
- Root lift: Use a round brush firmly into the root area moving in a rounded motion to create a volume, allow to cool for maximum lift.
- Smoothing / Straightening: Section hair, work step-by-step, direct airflow away from the root, hold with tension, round/flat brush, smooth cuticle, fully dry each section, allow to fix in new shape by cooling before removing brush, fully dry each section for a smooth/straight look.
- Ends curled under: Work in sections, medium to large round brush to create curl, direct airflow away from root, bend hair under with brush, smooth cuticle by directing airflow down hair shaft, allow to cool around brush to fix in new shape.
