TLE 8 Home Economics Nail Care Quarter 0 Module 1: Nail Care Tools and Equipment

Grade 8 TLE Nail Care module on the uses of nail care tools, consumables, and equipment, and how to hold and handle them safely.

This is the Technology and Livelihood Education (TLE) Grade 8 Home Economics – Nail Care module for Quarter 0, Module 1: Nail Care Tools and Equipment. It is an Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) module from DepEd Caraga Region, written for learners studying at their own pace with a teacher or parent as facilitator. After it, learners should be able to name the common nail care tools, consumables, and equipment, use them for the right task, and handle them safely.

On this page 6 sections

What learners will learn

The module has one learning outcome:

  • LO1: Prepare the necessary tools and equipment for the specific nail care activity (TLE_HEUTCG7/8-Oa-b-1)

By the end, learners are expected to:

  1. identify the uses of tools and equipment in nail care according to task requirements;
  2. use tools and equipment according to task requirements; and
  3. observe the safety procedures in using tools and equipment.

Tools, consumables, and equipment

The module sorts nail care items into three groups. Knowing each use helps you pick the right item for cutting, grooming, or cleaning, avoid injuries, and save money by caring for your nails at home.

Tools

Tools are durable, mostly handheld articles used in manicure and pedicure.

ToolUse
Cuticle nipperTrims or cuts the cuticle
Cuticle pusherPushes back and loosens the cuticle
Emery boardShapes the free edge with the coarse side and levels the nail with the fine side
Nail cutterTrims fingernails, toenails, and hangnails
Nail fileShapes and smooths the free edge of the nail
Orangewood stickLoosens the cuticle and applies cream, oil, or solvent to the cuticle
TweezerPicks up, retrieves, and replaces nail art embellishments
Callus removerStrips off calluses and corns and softens the skin
Cuticle scissorsTrim dead skin around the base of the nail; the curved tip follows the nail’s curve
Foot fileRemoves tough, dead skin from the feet
Nail brushRemoves cosmetics and cleans the nails

Consumables

These are cosmetics and materials used up during manicure, pedicure, and hand and foot spa: cuticle cream, cuticle remover, cuticle oil, base coat, nail polish, polish thinner (a solvent with acetone), nail whitener, nail drier spray, top coat, antiseptic solution, absorbent cotton, alcohol, disinfectants, and a spatula for taking creams out of jars.

Equipment

Equipment means permanent items like furniture and fixtures:

  • Manicure table – the work table, with a laminated surface and a drawer for materials
  • Manicurist’s chair or stool – an adjustable upholstered seat
  • Foot spa machine – soaks, bathes, and massages the feet
  • Hand spa machine – soothes arthritis pain, muscle spasms, and dry, cracked skin of the hands
  • Sterilizer – kills microorganisms on metal implements
  • Timer – can be preset to start or stop at a given time
  • Nail dryer machine – dries nail art faster
  • Nail art machine – used by professionals; comes in various types

Safe handling of tools and equipment

The module explains how to hold and use each item so that clients are served safely. Key points:

  • Cuticle nipper: hold by the handles with cutting edges toward you and the bent index finger over the shank. Work carefully so you do not cut live tissue.
  • Cuticle pusher: hold it like a pencil. Use the dull spade side in a flat position, keep the cuticle moist with cuticle remover, and avoid too much pressure.
  • Emery board: hold it like a nail file. Throw it away after use on one person.
  • Nail buffer: buff with downward strokes from the base to the free edge, and lift the buffer after each stroke to prevent heat and a burning feeling.
  • Nail cutter: place the blades around the nail, press the lever while keeping the head in place, then smooth rough spots with the built-in file.
  • Nail file: file from corner to center. Never file back and forth, which cracks and splits nails, and do not file deep into the corners, which can cause ingrown nails.
  • Orangewood stick: hold it like a pencil at 20 to 30 degrees from the nail plate, using gentle pressure.
  • Callus remover: glide it gently over the thick part of the callus with light pressure. Never place the blade over soft skin, or you may cause an open wound.
  • Foot file: start with the coarse side on the ball of the foot, toes, and heel rim, then finish with the fine side.
  • Hand and foot spa machine: keep wiring dry and away from water spills, and set a temperature the client can bear.
  • Nail dryer: use one with a timer and set it for the allotted time.

How to use this module

The module follows the usual ADM parts: What I Know (pretest), What’s In, What’s New, What is It, What’s More, What I Have Learned, What I Can Do, Assessment, Additional Activities, and Answer Key.

  • Learners: answer the 15-item What I Know test first; if you get everything right, you may skip the module. Write all answers on a separate sheet or notebook, not on the module. Activities include a word search, sorting items into tools and equipment, true-or-false items, a crossword, a case about a classmate named Liza, and a manicure flowchart. Return the module to your teacher when done.
  • Parents: help your child work honestly through each part in order and check answers only after finishing a task.
  • Teachers: the Additional Activities ask learners to demonstrate cuticle work with a cuticle pusher, nail file, orangewood stick, and nail cutter, scored with a rubric of 40, 20, 10, or 5 points. Activity 3 in What’s More is teacher-checked.

A. Safety Procedures of Using Tools and Equipment

Nail Care is now within reach of the masses, and it is part of a person’s grooming and a form of relaxation, either manicure, pedicure, hand spa, or foot spa. Learning to use tools and equipment properly ensures giving clients a nail care service safely.

1. Proper holding and handling of some tools.
DescriptionPicture
1.1 Cuticle Nipper
● Pick up the cuticle nipper by the handles and turn the cutting edges towards you; place the bent tip of the index finger over the top of the shank. Place the thumb on the side of the handle and the remaining fingers over the opposite handle. Use it with utmost care to remove dead cuticle and hangnails so as not to injure live tissue.
[photo: cuticle nipper on a fingernail]
1.2 Cuticle Pusher
● It is held in the same manner as in writing with a pencil. The dull spade side is used to push back and loosen the cuticles. Keep the cuticle moist using cuticle remover while working. Use the cuticle pusher in a flat position to remove dead cuticle adhering to the nail without scratching the nail plate. In using the pusher, avoid too much pressure to prevent injury on tissues.
[photo: hands resting on a towel during a nail service]
1.3 Emery Board
● It is held in the same manner as the nail file. Bevel the rough surface of the nail using the fine side to smoothen it. Emery boards are discarded after use on one person.
[photo: hands with an emery board]

[transcriber’s note: table continued from the previous page]

DescriptionPicture
1.4 Nail Buffer
● Place the thumb and the ring finger under the handle of the buffer while the index and the middle fingers are on its top and the pinky is on its side. Apply a small amount of powder over the buffer then buff the nails with downward strokes from the base to the free edge of each nail until a smooth clear gloss has been obtained. Buffing helps in giving the nail natural gloss and increases blood circulation to the fingertips. To prevent heating and burning sensation, lift the buffer from the nail after each stroke.
[photo: hand being buffed with a nail buffer]
1.5 Nail Cutter
● Raise the lever up and turn it in a circular motion 180 degrees, then lower the lever again toward the base of the clippers. Hold the nail clippers in your right hand with your thumb on the lever and the base resting against your index finger if you’re right-handed. Place the head, where the cutting blades are located, around the fingernail or toenail you intend to cut. Apply pressure on the lever or handles, being careful that the head of the clippers remains in place. Use the file included on the clippers to smooth any overly rough spots left by the nail clipper.
[photo: nail cutter on a fingernail]
1.6 Nail File
● Hold the file firmly in the right or left hand (as the case may be), with the thumb underneath it for support and the other four fingers on its upper surface. Place the file slightly under the free edge and file the nail from corner to center, shaping the nail. Never file back and forth; this would cause the nails to crack and split. Do not file deep into the corners; this weakens the nails, hurts the skin and causes ingrown nails.
[photo: hand being filed with a nail file]
1.7 Orangewood Stick
● Hold the stick like a pencil with a tip at 20-30 degrees from the nail plate while pushing the cuticles free. To loosen cuticle, work around nail; for applying oil or solvent, slightly dip the cotton-tipped orangewood stick and work around the base of the nail; to clean under the free edge of the nail, from the center toward each side, with gentle pressure so that live tissue at the root of the nail will not be injured.
[photo: orangewood stick at the cuticle]

[transcriber’s note: table continued from the previous page]

DescriptionPicture
1.8 Callus Remover
● Insert the blade into the callous remover with care. Lay the callous remover on the top thick part of the callous. Do not lay the blade above the area that is going to be cut, as this may result in cutting the soft part of the foot, resulting in an open wound. Applying light pressure with a steady hand on the callous remover, gently glide it over the callous. Repeat the process if necessary until the callous is thinner. Smoothen the callous with a foot file.
[photo: callus remover used on a foot]
1.9 Foot file
● Start with the course side of the foot file. Gently slide it back and forth across the ball of your foot and the bottom the toes. Still with the rough side of the file work mostly on the outside rim of the heel. Flip the file over and repeat the process with each foot. The fine side will smoothen the skin and leave it feeling polished.
[photo: foot file used on a foot]
2. Proper holding and handling of some equipment.
DescriptionPicture
2.1 Hand and Foot Spa Machine
● Ensure that electrical wirings are dry and protected from accidental water spillage. Set the machine to the temperature that the client can withstand.
[photo: hand inserted into a spa machine]
2.2 Nail Dryer
● Use a nail dryer with time features and set the timer for the allotted time.
