This is Module 1 of the Grade 8 Technology and Livelihood Education (TLE) Home Economics: Cookery self-learning module, “Kitchen Tools, Equipment & Paraphernalia.” It is an Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) module from DepEd Caraga Region (First Edition, 2020) for learners studying at home or in school. After it, learners can name common kitchen tools and equipment and sort cleaning tools and equipment by their uses.
On this page 6 sections
What learners will learn
The module covers one learning outcome:
- LO 1: Utilize appropriate kitchen tools, equipment, paraphernalia (TLE_HECJ7/8UTOa-1)
By the end of the module, learners are expected to:
- Identify types of tools, equipment, and paraphernalia.
- Classify the types of appropriate cleaning tools and equipment based on their uses.
Kitchen tools, paraphernalia, and equipment
The module’s single lesson, “Kitchen Tools, Equipment and Paraphernalia; and Cleaning Tools and Equipment Base in Their Uses,” starts by noting that cooking every day is hard work, and that tools and equipment make it easier. It explains that tools which are more complicated are called equipment. Equipment can be a small electrical appliance, such as a mixer, or a large power-operated appliance, such as a range or a refrigerator.
Common kitchen tools and paraphernalia
| Tool | What it is used for |
|---|---|
| Measuring cups | Measuring the volume of liquid or bulk solid ingredients |
| Measuring spoons | Measuring smaller quantities of liquid and dry ingredients; standardized and in different sizes |
| Strainer | Removing dirt or lumps from dry ingredients, combining dry ingredients, and extracting milk from desiccated coconut |
| Serving tong | Grabbing and transferring food or meat with a better grip |
| Can opener | Opening food tins |
| Cutting board | A wooden or plastic board for cutting meat, fruits, and vegetables |
| Whisk | Whipping eggs or batter and blending gravies, sauces, and soups |
| Mixing bowl | A container for mixing food; comes in different sizes |
| Vegetable peeler | Scraping vegetables such as carrots and potatoes, and peeling fruits |
| Pasta spoon or server | Moving cooked pasta to a plate without a mess |
| Grater | Grating, shredding, slicing, and separating foods such as carrots, cabbage, and cheese |
Kitchen equipment
- Electric mixer: mixes ingredients by beating, stirring, or whipping.
- Barbecue grill: broils fish, meat, or vegetables like corn and sweet potato.
- Pressure cooker: an airtight container that cooks food at high temperature under high pressure.
- Oven: an enclosed chamber for dry-heat cooking, such as baking, fueled by LPG or electricity.
- Refrigerator: keeps a low temperature inside for storing semi-perishable foods like eggs, fruits, vegetables, milk, butter, cheese, and leftovers.
Cleaning tools and equipment
The module defines cleaning as the process of removing unwanted substances, such as dirt, infectious agents, and other impurities, from an object or environment.
Cleaning tools covered in the module:
- Sponge: for dishwashing; it is smooth, so it does not scratch dishes.
- Spray bottle: for spraying detergent or water on kitchen equipment and surfaces.
- Glove: covers the whole hand while doing household chores.
- Hand brush: keeps bottle straws and kitchenware tubes free of microbial growth.
- Steel wool: removes surface rust and stains from cutlery, ceramic dinnerware, and glass and melamine utensils.
Cleaning equipment covered in the module:
- Vacuum: usually electric; removes dirt from floors and other surfaces.
- Spin mop: cleans the floor without touching dirty mop heads.
How to use this module
The module follows the standard ADM parts, in this order:
- What I Know: a 15-item multiple-choice pretest. Answer it first. If you get every item right, the module says you may skip it.
- What’s In: identify six kitchen objects from photos.
- What’s New: check which items (sponges, steel wool, gloves, cutting board, strainer, hand brush) you have at home.
- What is It: short questions about helping with chores and cooking at home, then the discussion of tools, equipment, and cleaning tools.
- What’s More: list the tools and equipment in your kitchen, match pictures to descriptions, and draw ten kitchen and cleaning items.
- What I Have Learned: five fill-in-the-blank sentences.
- What I Can Do: list at least five items, classify each as a kitchen tool, equipment, or cleaning tool, and give its use.
- Assessment: a 15-item multiple-choice post-test.
- Additional Activities: list the tools and equipment you see in a kitchen photo.
For learners: write all answers in your activity notebook or on a separate sheet, not on the module. Check your work honestly with the answer key at the end, and return the module to your teacher when you finish.
For parents: many activities use your own kitchen, so let your child look around, name the items, and help with simple cooking tasks.
For teachers: orient learners on using the module, track their progress, and use the Assessment results to see who has mastered the competency. Several answers (Activity 1, What’s New, What is It, Additional Activities) vary by learner and need your checking.
