This is the Technology and Livelihood Education (TLE) Grade 10 self-learning module for ICT-Technical Drafting (Technical Drafting NC II), Quarter 1, Module 6: Operate CAD Software and Computer Hardware (Manipulating CAD Features: Manipulations). It is meant for Week 6 of the quarter. It teaches learners how to use the drawing aids on the AutoCAD status bar and the Object Snaps (Osnaps) to make precise, accurate drawings.
What learners will learn
The module covers this learning competency (code TLE_ICTTD9-12CA-Ic-j-2): LO 1. Operate CAD software and computer hardware, 1.3 Manipulate CAD features as per job requirement: Manipulations.
After going through the module, learners are expected to:
- identify and match the commands in the status bar and their functions;
- explain the functions of object snaps;
- demonstrate accuracy in drafting a drawing using the object snaps in AutoCAD; and
- show organization, accuracy, and creativity in choosing the right commands to use in drafting.
Drawing aids on the AutoCAD status bar
The lesson discusses eight drawing aids found on the status bar.
| Drawing aid | Shortcut | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Display drawing grid (GRID) | F7 | Shows a regular pattern of dots, like graph paper behind your drawing. It gives a general idea of the size of objects and can mark the extent of the drawing. |
| Snap mode (SNAP or SN) | F9 | Lets you pick only points that lie on a regular grid. The snap grid is separate from the display grid. |
| Ortho mode (ORTHO) | F8 | Keeps lines orthogonal, meaning only vertical or horizontal. It is a mode you turn on or off, not a command. |
| Polar tracking | F10 | Tracks along angle increments such as 90, 60, 45, 30, 22.5, 18, 15, 10, and 5 degrees, or angles you set in the tracking settings. |
| Isometric drafting (ISODRAFT) | F5 | Used for isometric drawing; it supersedes the ISOPLANE command. |
| Annotation scale | None given | Lets you draw at a scale of 1:1, because in AutoCAD scaling happens when you print, not while you draw. |
| Isolate objects | None given | Lets you isolate or hide selected objects, or end object isolation. |
| Object Snap (OSNAP) | F3 | Opens the snap points; you can also press Shift while right-clicking in the drawing area and choose OSNAP settings. |
The Object Snaps (Osnaps)
AutoCAD has fourteen Osnaps. The module explains that you will likely use about half of them regularly. Each can be picked with Shift + right-click. The ones discussed are:
- Endpoint (END): snaps to the end points of lines and arcs and to polyline vertices. It is one of the most used Osnaps.
- Midpoint (MID): snaps to the midpoints of lines, arcs, and polyline segments.
- Center (CEN): snaps to the center of a circle, arc, or polyline arc segment. The cursor must pass over the circumference first.
- Node (NODE): snaps to the center of a Point object. It is useful after creating points with the Measure or Divide commands.
- Quadrant (QUAD): snaps to one of the four quadrant points of a circle: north, south, east, and west (90, 270, 0, and 180 degrees).
- Intersection: snaps to where two drawing objects cross, and to polyline vertices.
- Perpendicular: snaps to a point that forms a perpendicular with the selected object. Drawing from a perpendicular point is called “Deferred Perpendicular.”
- Tangent (TAN): snaps to a tangent point on a circle. Drawing from a tangent point is called “Deferred Tangent.”
- Parallel: draws a line parallel to another line. Start the Line command, pick the first point, start the Parallel Osnap, then hover over an existing line until the Parallel marker appears.
- Nearest: snaps to the nearest point on an object such as an arc, circle, ellipse, line, polyline, or spline (defined in the matching activity).
Activities in the module
- What I Know (pretest): 15 multiple-choice questions on Osnaps and status bar shortcuts.
- What’s In (Letter Mix-Up): unscramble 10 drafting terms, such as visible, dimensions, and leader.
- What’s New (Secret Sentence): use the first sound of each pictured word to find a hidden sentence.
- What’s More (Functional Parts): match 10 Osnaps with their functions.
- What I Have Learned (Names and Functions): name five status bar drawing aids and explain them in your own words.
- What I Can Do: Activity 1 is a hands-on AutoCAD drawing of a dimensioned object for learners with a computer and AutoCAD. Activity 2 is a one-point and two-point perspective drawing exercise on paper for learners without a computer. Both are scored with a rubric.
- Post-Assessment: 15 multiple-choice questions.
- Additional Activity: a critical thinking question about what to do if your computer slows down while preparing an architectural drawing.
How to use this module
- Learners: Answer What I Know first, then work through each part in order. Write all answers on a separate sheet, not on the module. Choose the What I Can Do activity that fits your situation. If you use AutoCAD, save your work as lastName_FirstName_Exer2.dwg. Check your answers honestly using the answer key, and return the module to your teacher when you finish.
- Parents and guardians: Help your child follow the steps and use separate answer sheets. Encourage them to ask the teacher when a task is hard.
- Teachers and facilitators: Orient learners on how to use the module, track their progress, and tell parents about the procedure. The What I Can Do outputs are graded with the rubrics printed in the module.

What Is It
Hello learners, let us explore some of the drawing aids in the status bar used in creating precise and accurate drawings.
[illustration: status bar of AutoCAD with drawing aid buttons numbered 1 to 8 by callout arrows]
[chart: table; Commands and Functions of drawing aids]
| Commands | Functions |
|---|---|
| 1. Display drawing Grid Shortcut key: F7 Command: GRID [enter] Specify grid spacing(X) or [ON/OFF/Snap/Aspect] <10.000>: (enter grid spacing) | A regular pattern of dots displayed on the screen which acts as a visual aid, it is the equivalent of having a sheet of graph paper behind your drawing on a drawing board. You can control the grid spacing, so it can give you a general idea about the size of drawn objects. It can also be used to define the extent of your drawing. |
| 2. Snap mode Shortcut key: F9 Command: SNAP or SN [enter] Specify snap spacing or [ON/OFF/Aspect/Rotate/Style/Type] <10.0000>: (enter the required snap spacing indrawing units) | Snap mode takes AutoCAD one step further than the drawing board. With Snap mode turned on AutoCAD only allows you to pick points which lie on a regular grid. The Snap grid is completely independent of the display grid. |
| 3. Ortho Mode Shortcut key: F8 Command: ORTHO Enter mode [ON/OFF] <OFF>: (typeON or OFF) | Ortho is short for orthogonal, which means either vertical or horizontal. Like the other options on the status bar, Ortho is not really a command, it is a drawing mode which can either be turned on or off. Ortho mode canbe toggled on or off in one of three ways. |
[transcriber’s note: table continued from the previous page]
| Commands | Functions |
|---|---|
| 4. Polar Tracking Shortcut key: F10 You can position specific angles you like in polar tracking by selecting thedrop-down arrow of polar tracking icon and select tracking settings. | Specify Polar Angles (Polar Tracking) You can use polar tracking to track along polar angle increments of 90, 60, 45, 30, 22.5, 18, 15, 10, and 5 degrees, or you can specify different angles. [illustration: Drafting Settings dialog box, Polar Tracking tab; callouts “Type specific angles you want.” and “Click ok”; shows Polar Tracking On (F10), Polar Angle Settings, Increment angle, Additional angles, New, Delete, Polar Angle measurement Absolute / Relative to last segment; buttons Options…, OK, Cancel, Help] |
| 5 Isometric Drafting (ISODRAFT) Shortcut key-F5 | The ISODRAFT command supersedes the ISOPLANE command. |
| 6. Annotation Scale | When drawing on paper you must decide to draw and say, 1:20 or 1:200 depending upon the size of the object that you are drawing so that your scaled drawing will fit on the drawing sheet, be that A3 or A1. In AutoCAD you do not need to decide upon a drawing scale until you come to print the drawing and because the scaling of your drawing takes place at the printing stage, you can create drawings at a scale of 1:1. |
| 7. Isolate Objects | Click the isolate button to choose whether you want to isolate or hide selected objects or end object isolation. [illustration: left, a circle, a triangle and a rectangle; right, only the triangle remains] |
[transcriber’s note: table continued from the previous page]
| Commands | Functions |
|---|---|
| Original object Selected object like the circle and rectangle was isolated or hidden. |
8. Object Snap/OSNAP
Shortcut key: F3 or press SHIFT while right-clicking in the drawing area and choose OSNAP setting.
[illustration: Drafting Settings dialog box, Object Snap tab; checked: Object Snap Tracking On (F11), Insertion, Nearest, Parallel; Object Snap modes listed: Endpoint, Midpoint, Center, Geometric Center, Node, Quadrant, Intersection, Extension, Insertion, Perpendicular, Tangent, Nearest, Apparent intersection, Parallel; buttons Select All, Clear All, Options…, OK, Cancel, Help; tip text: “To track from an Osnap point, pause over the point while in a command. A tracking vector appears when you move the cursor. To stop tracking, pause over the point again.”]
There are fourteen (14) Osnaps in all, and although they are all useful in certain situations you will probably find yourself using about half of them on a regular basis and the other half in special circumstances.
a. Endpoint Osnap
The Endpoint Osnap breaks to the end points of lines and arcs and to polyline vertices. This is one of the most useful and commonly used Osnaps.
Command: END Short-cut: Shift + Right Click Endpoint
[illustration: endpoint snap marker at the end of a line; label “Endpoint”]
b. Midpoint Osnap
The Midpoint Osnap breaks to the midpoints of lines and arcs and to the mid-point of polyline segments. Command: MID Short-cut: Shift + Right Click Midpoint
[illustration: midpoint snap marker on a line; label “Midpoint”]
c. Center Osnap
Snaps to the center of a circle, arc or polyline arc segment. The cursor mustpass over the circumference of the circle or the arc so that the center canbe found.
Command: CEN Short-cut: Shift + Right Click Center
[illustration: center snap marker inside a circle; label “Center”]
d. Node
The Node Osnap snaps to the center ofa Point object. This Osnap can be useful if you have created several Points with the Measure or Divide commands.
Command: NODE Short-cut: Shift + Right Click Node
[illustration: node snap marker on a point at a line; label “Node”]
e. Quadrant
Snaps to one of the four circle quadrant points located at north, south, east, and west or 90, 270, 0 and 180 degreesrespectively.
[illustration: circle with quadrant snap marker; labels “Quadrant” and “45°”]
Command: QUAD Short-cut: Shift + Right Click quadrant
f. Intersection
Snaps to the physical intersection ofany two drawing objects (i.e., where lines, arcs or circles etc. cross eachother) and to Polyline vertices.
Extended intersections as shown beloware available only as overrides during acommand, not as a running object snap.
Command: INTERSECTION Short-cut: Shift + Right Click intersection
[illustration: two crossing lines with intersection snap marker; labels “1.5682”, “0°”, “Intersection”]
g. Perpendicular
Snaps to a point which forms a perpendicular with the selected object. As with the Tangent Osnap, Perpendicular can be used to draw a lineto a perpendicular point, as in the illustration or from a perpendicular point, known as the “Deferred Perpendicular”snap mode.
Command: PERPENDICULAR Short-cut: Shift + Right Click Perpendicular
[illustration: line with perpendicular snap marker; labels “57°”, “0.6064”, “Perpendicular”]
h. Tangent
Snaps to a tangent point on a circle. This Osnap works in two ways. You can either draw a line from a point to the tangent point or you can draw a line from a tangent point, the latter is referred to as the “Deferred Tangent” snap mode.
Command: TAN Short-cut: Shift + Right Click TAN
[illustration: two circles joined by a tangent line with deferred tangent marker; label “Deferred Tangent”]
i. Parallel
Used to draw a line parallel to any other line in your drawing. In operation, this Osnap is slightly less intuitive than someof the others. To draw a parallel line, first start the Line command, specify the firstpoint when prompted and then start the Parallel Osnap. Hover the cursor over anexisting line until you see the Parallel snap marker.
[illustration: parallel snap marker between two circles and lines; labels “1.3745” and “Parallel” with “33”]
