TLE 10 Technical Drafting Quarter 1 Module 4: Manipulating CAD Features (Tools)

This is the Grade 10 Technology and Livelihood Education (TLE) self-learning module for ICT-Technical Drafting NC II, Quarter 1, Module 4: Operate CAD Software and Computer Hardware (Manipulating CAD Features: Tools). It is set for Quarter 1, Week 4 and was developed by DepEd Cordillera Administrative Region. It teaches learners the AutoCAD modify commands and how to use them to build and change drawings.

What learners will learn

The module covers this learning competency:

  • LO 1. Operate CAD software and computer hardware, 1.3 Manipulate CAD features as per job requirement: Tools (code TLE_ICTTD9-12CA-Ic-j-2)

After the module, learners are expected to:

  1. identify and match modifying commands to their functions;
  2. construct drawing objects by applying the modifying tools; and
  3. develop traits such as ingenuity, creativity, independence, and passion for learning.

The module has one lesson: Lesson 1, Manipulating CAD Features as per Job Requirement: Tools.

The AutoCAD modify commands in this module

The module explains 13 commands from the AutoCAD Modify toolbar. Each one can be started by typing its name or its short command and pressing Enter.

CommandTypeWhat it does
MoveMOVE or MMoves selected objects from one place to another without making a copy.
CopyCOPY or COMakes one or more duplicates of objects you have already drawn.
RotateROTATE or ROTurns objects around a base point you pick.
TrimTRIM or TRCuts off part of an object using a second object as the cutting edge.
EraseERASE or EDeletes selected objects from the drawing.
MirrorMIRROR or MIMakes a mirror image of objects across an imaginary line set by two points.
OffsetOFFSET or OCreates a new object parallel to or concentric with a selected object.
ArrayARRAY or ARDuplicates objects in a rectangular or circular (polar) pattern; a path array is also shown.
ChamferCHAMFER or CHACuts a beveled corner between two non-parallel lines or two adjacent polyline segments.
FilletFILLET or FDraws an arc (a rounded corner) between two intersecting lines or adjacent polyline segments.
StretchSTRETCH or SMoves one or more vertices of an object while the rest stays the same.
ScaleSCALE or SCChanges the size of an object or group of objects.
ExplodeEXPLODEBreaks a compound object into its component objects.

Points worth remembering

  • Trim needs a cutting edge. Cutting edges can be lines, xlines, rays, polylines, circles, arcs, or ellipses. Blocks and text cannot be trimmed or used as cutting edges.
  • Erase can be undone. Type U to undo, use the Standard toolbar, or use the OOPS command to bring deleted objects back.
  • Offset is described as one of the most useful commands for constructing drawings. It can make a single offset or multiple offsets.
  • Chamfer and Fillet are set up first. For Chamfer, you usually set the chamfer distances before making the chamfer. With distances of zero, you get a sharp corner. For Fillet, you run the command once to set the radius and again to pick the two lines.
  • Scale factor: a factor of 2 doubles the size of the selected objects, and a factor of 0.5 reduces them to half. You can also scale by picking a second point, but this is harder to control precisely.
  • Array types: choose Rectangular or Polar in the Array dialog box to see the point, distance, and method settings for each.

Activities in the module

  • What I Know (Pretest): 15 multiple-choice items on the commands, their shortcuts, and their illustrations.
  • What’s In, “Name Me”: identify the drawing commands used in five figures. The answers are Rectangle, Polygon, Circle, Arc, and Polyline.
  • What’s New, “Shape Slip and Slide”: practice rotation, reflection, and translation of shapes on a grid.
  • What’s More, “Functional Parts”: match 10 descriptions to the correct modify command.
  • What I Have Learned, “Missing Names”: name the command used in 10 drawing pairs, such as table-and-chair layouts, sofas, and stoves.
  • What I Can Do, “Drawing Problem”: draw two figures (each based on a circle labeled R4.5) using the right modify commands. Hints suggest Polygon, Offset, Trim, Circle, and Array.
  • Assessment: a 15-item multiple-choice post-test.
  • Additional Activity, “Smile or Frown”: 10 true-or-false statements about the commands.

How to use this module

For learners: Answer What I Know first, then work through each part in order. Finish each task before moving to the next. Write all answers on a separate sheet of paper, not on the module. For the drawing problem, use AutoCAD and save your file as Last Name_First Name_drawing Problem 1.dwg. If you have no AutoCAD software or computer, draw the figures by hand on short bond paper with a 1-inch margin on each side. Check your work honestly with the answer key at the end, and return the module to your teacher when you are done.

For parents and guardians: You are the learner’s main support at home. Make sure your child uses a separate answer sheet and reads each instruction before starting a task.

For teachers and facilitators: Orient learners on using the module and track their progress. The answer key covers every activity and test. The drawing problem is scored with a rubric on five criteria, each rated Excellent (10), Very Satisfactory (8), Satisfactory (5), or Needs Improvement (3):

  • following instructions
  • proficiency
  • accuracy
  • use of AutoCAD command tools
  • completeness

What Is It

Hello learners! In creating your drawing in AutoCAD, you need the right tools to create accurate and precise drawing. AutoCAD provides a whole range of modify tools such as Move, Copy, Rotate and Mirror that you can use to create the image you need.

Let us explore the different modifying commands.

[illustration: AutoCAD Modify toolbar icons with callout labels: Rotate, Trim, Erase, Move, Mirror, Explode, Copy, Chamfer/Follet, Stretch, Scale, Array, Offset]

[transcriber’s note: the toolbar label is printed as “Chamfer/Follet”]

1. Move

The Move command works in a similar way to the Copy command except that no copy is made, the selected object(s) is simply moved from one location to another

[illustration: hexagon labeled “Selected Object”, “Original Object”, and “Moved Object”]

Command: MOVE or M [enter]

2. Copy

The copy command can be used to create one or more duplicates of any drawing object or objects which you have previously created.

[illustration: hexagon labeled “Selected Object”, “Original Object”, and “Moved Object”]

Command Entry: Copy or CO [enter]

3. Rotate

The Rotate command allows an object or objects to be rotated about a point selected by the user.

[illustration: rectangle labeled “Original Object”, rotated rectangle labeled “Rotated Object”, and “Rotated base point”]

Command: ROTATE or RO [enter]

4. Trim

The Trim command can be used to trim a part of an object. In order to trim an object, you must draw a second object which forms the “cutting edge”. Cutting edges can be lines, xlines, rays, polylines, circles, arcs or ellipses. Blocks and text cannot be trimmed or used as cutting edges.

[illustration: circle labeled “Before Trim” with “Cutting Edge” and “Want to trim” marked, and circle labeled “After Trim”]

Command: TRIM or TR [enter]

5. Erase

The Erase command is one of the simplest AutoCAD commands and is one of the most used. The command erases (deletes) any selected object(s) from the drawing. Remember you can always get deleted objects back by typing U to undo, from the Standard toolbar or by using the OOPS command.

[illustration: grid of lines labeled “Original Object” and “Erased Object”]

Command: ERASE or E [enter]

6. Mirror

The Mirror command allows you to mirror selected objects in your drawing by picking them and then defining the position of an imaginary mirror line using two points.

[illustration: pentagon labeled “Original Object” and pentagon labeled “Mirrored Object”]

Command: MIRROR or MI [enter]

7. Offset

Offset is probably one of the most useful commands for constructing drawings. The Offset command creates a new object parallel to or concentric with a selected object.

[illustration: square labeled “Original Object”, square labeled “Single Object”, and nested squares labeled “Multiple offset option”]

Command: OFFSET or O [enter]

8. Array

Using the Array command, you can duplicate existing objects in a rectangle or circular (polar) pattern. You can select which type of array to use in the Array dialog box. Click the Rectangular or Polar options to see point, distance, and method requirements for each type.

[illustration: circle of small circles labeled “Polar Array”, grid of small squares labeled “Rectangular Array”, and curved row of small circles labeled “Path Array”]

Command: ARRAY or AR [enter]

9. Chamfer

The Chamfer command enables you to create a chamfer between any two non- parallel lines as in the illustration below or any two adjacent polyline segments. Usually, the Chamfer command is used to set the chamfer distances before drawing the chamfer. Follow the command sequence below where the chamfer distances are changed to 20 before the chamfer is made.

[illustration: corner labeled “Chamfer Distance 1 & 2 zero” and beveled corner labeled “Chamfer Distance 1 & 2 non zero”]

Command: CHAMFER or CHA [enter]

10. Fillet

The Fillet command is a very useful tool which allows you to draw an arc between two intersecting lines or adjacent polyline segments. You need first to use the command to set the required radius and then a second time to select the two lines.

[illustration: intersecting lines labeled “Original Object” and rounded corner labeled “Radius= 0.50”]

Command: FILLET or F [enter]

11. Stretch

The Stretch command can be used to move one or more vertices of an object while leaving the rest of the object unchanged. In the example below, a rectangle has been stretched by moving one vertex to create an irregular shape.

Command: STRETCH or S [enter]

12. Scale

The Scale command can be used to change the size of an object or group of objects. You are prompted for a pick point about which the selection set will be scaled.

Scaling can then be completed by picking a second point (not always easy because it can sometimes be difficult to precisely control the scaling) or by entering a scale factor at the keyboard. For example, a scale factor of 2 will double the size of the objects in the selection set and a factor of 0.5 will reduce them into half.

[illustration: octagons labeled “A. Selected Object”, “B. Selected Object”, “Scale factor= 0.50”, and “Scale factor= 2.0”]

Command: SCALE or SC [enter]

13. Explode

The explode command breaks the compound object into its component objects.

Command Entry: Explode [enter]
