This is the Mathematics Grade 7 Quarter 2 Module 2 self-learning module, Solving Problems Involving Conversion of Units. It was developed by DepEd Region XII (SOCCSKSARGEN) for home-based learning. It teaches learners to change measurements from one unit to another within and between the Metric and English systems, and then to use these conversions in word problems.
What learners will learn
After going through this module, learners are expected to:
- convert a metric unit to another metric unit (M7ME-IIb-1);
- convert an English system unit to another English system unit (M7ME-IIb-1);
- convert a metric unit to an English system unit and vice versa (M7ME-IIb-1); and
- solve problems involving conversion of units (M7ME-IIb-2).
What the module covers
The module has one lesson, “Solving Problems Involving Conversion of Units,” divided into three subtopics:
- Converting from one Metric unit to another Metric unit, and from one English unit to another English unit
- Converting from Metric units to English units and vice versa
- Solving problems involving conversion of units
Key ideas: units and conversion factors
Conversion of units is changing a measurement of the same quantity from one unit to another, usually by multiplying with conversion factors. A conversion factor is a number used to change one set of units to another by multiplying or dividing.
The module works with two systems:
- English System: based on a non-universal way of measuring, using human body parts or other instruments (inches, feet, yards, pounds, gallons)
- Metric System: based on a decimal system (meters, grams, liters), with prefixes such as kilo (10³), hecto (10²), deka (10¹), deci (10⁻¹), centi (10⁻²), and milli (10⁻³)
The module gives full conversion tables for length, mass, area, volume, fluid volume, time, and temperature. Some of the equivalents learners use most:
| Quantity | Sample equivalents from the module |
|---|---|
| Length | 1 ft = 12 in; 1 yd = 3 ft; 1 in = 2.54 cm; 1 km ≈ 0.62 mi |
| Mass | 1 lb = 16 oz; 1 kg = 1,000 g; 1 oz ≈ 28.3 g; 1 lb ≈ 0.45 kg |
| Area | 1 yd² = 9 ft²; 1 ha = 100 a; 1 a = 100 m²; 1 m² ≈ 1.196 yd² |
| Volume | 1 yd³ = 27 ft³; 1 mL = 1 cm³; 1 L = 1,000 mL; 1 gallon ≈ 3.79 L |
| Fluid volume | 1 cup = 8 fl oz; 1 fl oz = 2 tablespoons; 1 qt = 2 pt; 1 gal = 4 qt |
| Time | 1 hour = 60 minutes; 1 month ≈ 30 days; 1 decade = 10 years |
| Temperature | °C = 5/9 (°F − 32); °F = 9/5 °C + 32; K = °C + 273 |
Steps for converting a unit
- Compare the two units.
- Find the conversion factor that gives the right ratio to the given unit.
- Write the conversion as a fraction whose denominator is in the same unit as the given unit.
- Write a multiplication problem with the original number and the fraction.
- Cancel out the units that appear in both the numerator and the denominator.
- Solve.
Worked examples from the module
- Length: 108 in × (1 ft / 12 in) = 9 ft
- Two steps: 39 dm × (1 m / 10 dm) × (1,000 mm / 1 m) = 3,900 mm
- Mass: 7.2 lb × (16 oz / 1 lb) = 115.2 oz
- Area: 1.2 ha × (100 a / 1 ha) × (100 m² / 1 a) = 12,000 m²
- Volume: 7,200 cm³ × (1 mL / 1 cm³) × (1 L / 1,000 mL) = 7.2 L
- Fluid volume: 3 cups × (8 fl oz / 1 cup) × (2 tbsp / 1 fl oz) = 48 tbsp
- Time: 0.5 month × (30 days / 1 month) × (24 hrs / 1 day) = 360 hrs
- Temperature: 60 °F to °C = 5/9 (60 − 32) = 140/9 ≈ 15.56 °C
When a table has no direct equivalent, chain two or more factors, as in the decimeter-to-millimeter example.
Key ideas: solving word problems
The module says that knowing measurements and problem-solving strategies is needed for routine and non-routine word problems. Some can be solved with arithmetic or algebra, and some by drawing a diagram. Its examples include:
- Tamaraw calf: A calf is 2 ft 5 in long, and a grown tamaraw is 3 times as long. Multiplying gives 6 ft 15 in. Since 15 in = 1 ft 3 in, the answer is 7 ft 3 in.
- Bed size: A bed 2 m by 1.3 m has an area of 2.6 m², which is 26,000 cm².
- Freight charge: A company charges ₱1,100 for the first 20 kg and ₱60 for each succeeding 2 kg. A box of 88 lb is about 39.6 kg. The extra 19.6 kg costs ₱588, so the total is ₱1,688.
- Filling a jar: 114 ounces poured three times is 342 ounces. Converting ounces to cups, pints, and then quarts gives about 10.69 quarts.
How to use this module
The module follows the usual SLM parts:
- What I Know: a 15-item multiple-choice pretest to check what you already know.
- What’s In and What’s New: hands-on activities. You measure family members’ heights in meters, feet and inches, and centimeters, and count how many cups make 1 liter of water.
- What is It: the conversion tables, steps, and worked examples.
- What’s More: Activity 3 (15 conversion items) and Activity 4 (three word problems).
- What I Have Learned: fill-in-the-blank review and summary.
- What I Can Do: real-life conversions and problems, such as a cake’s total weight and the number of bricks for a patio.
- Assessment: a 15-item multiple-choice post-test.
- Additional Activities: five enrichment problems.
For learners: Write all answers and solutions on a separate sheet of paper, not on the module. Read each instruction before starting. Use the answer key at the end honestly to check your work. Ask your teacher or facilitator if you have trouble.
For parents: Help your child with the measuring activities at home. You will need a measuring tool, two containers, water, and a measuring cup.
For teachers: The module includes notes for facilitators. Its answer key covers the pretest, activities, and assessment. Check the key against your own solutions before you use it for grading.

What is It
To be able to solve problems similar to the given activity, we need to practice the skill of converting measurements from one unit to another.
CONVERSION OF MEASUREMENTS FROM ONE UNIT TO ANOTHER
Conversion of units is the conversion between different units of measurement for the same quantity, typically through multiplicative conversion factors. Conversion Factor is a number used to change one set of units to another, either by multiplying or dividing. This involves the English System which is based on a non-universal way of measuring by means of human body parts or other instrument and the Metric System which is based on a decimal system.
The conversion could be from same system: English System to English System or Metric System to Metric System. It could also be from English System to Metric System and vice versa.
The table of conversion is needed to convert one unit to another unit.

SOLVING PROBLEMS INVOLVING CONVERSION OF UNITS OF MEASURE
Knowledge of measurement and problem-solving strategies are necessary in solving routine and nonroutine word problems. Many problems can be solved using arithmetic or algebraic processes. There are problems, however, that can be solved by simply drawing a diagram.
Example 1. There is a jar on the cabinet by the refrigerator. If Keona pours 114 ounces of water into the jar three times to fill it, how many quarts of water does it take to fill the jar?
Solution:
114 x 3 = 342 ounces of water in 3 jars
342 ounces = ________ quarts
To convert ounces to quarts, we need the following equivalents:
8 oz = I cup 2 c = 1 pt 2 pt = 1 qt
Thus, 342 oz x 1 c / 8 oz x 1 pt / 2 c x 1 qt / 2 pt = 342 qt / 32 = 10.69 qt.
Therefore, it takes 10.69 quarts of water to fill the three jars.
Example 2. A tamaraw calf was 2 foot 5 inches long. Fully grown, it is 3 times as long. How long is the fully grown tamaraw?
[photo: a small tamaraw calf beside a fully grown tamaraw, with a line under each marked “2ft 5 in”; credit printed in the photo: http://en.m.wikipedia.org]
2ft 5 in 2ft 5 in X 3
Solution: First, we multiply each unit by 5. (2ft 5in) (3) = 6ft 15in
[transcriber’s note: the printed text says “multiply each unit by 5”; the calculation that follows multiplies by 3]
To convert 15 inches to feet, we multiply the inches by the conversion factor.
6ft 15in = 6ft + (15in x (1 ft / 12 in)) = 6ft + 1 ft + 3 in = 7ft 3 in.
Example 3. How much water, in cubic centimeters, can a cubical water tank hold if it has an edge of 3 meters?
Solution 1: (using a conversion factor)
i. Volume = e³ = (3m)³ = 27m³
ii. 27m³ x 100 cm³ / 1 m³ = 27,000,000 cm³
Solution 2:
i. 3m x 100 cm³ / 1 m³ = 300 cm
ii. Volume = e³ = (300cm)³ = 27, 000, 000 cm³
Example 4. Joel is using a bed which is 2 meters long and 1.3 meters wide. What is the size of the bed in square centimeters?
Step 1: Area = l x w Area = 2 m x 1.3 m Area = 2.6
Step 2: Area = 2.6 m² x 100 dm² / 1 m² x 100 cm² / 1 dm² = 26, 000 cm²
Example 5. A forwarding company charges ₱1,100 for the first 20 kg and ₱60 for each succeeding 2 kg for freight sent to Europe. How much do you need to pay for a box weighing 88 lb?
Solution:
Step 1: 88 lb x 0.45 kg / 1 lb = 39.6 kg
Step 2: 39.6 kg − 20 kg = 19.6 kg
Step 3: 19.6 kg / 2 kg x 60 = ₱588
Step 4: 20 kg = ₱1,100 19.6 kg = ₱588 ₱1,688
Conclusion: Therefore, the company pays ₱1,688 for 88 lb of box.
What’s More
