This is the Mathematics 6 Quarter 1 Module 5 self-learning module (SLM), Adding Decimals and Mixed Decimals Through Ten Thousandths. It is an Alternative Delivery Mode module from DepEd Region VI, First Edition, 2020. It is written for Grade 6 learners studying at home, with guidance from parents and teachers. By the end, learners can add decimals up to four decimal places, with and without regrouping, and use addition to solve word problems.
What learners will learn
After going through this module, learners are expected to:
- add decimals and mixed decimals through ten thousandths without regrouping (M6NS-Id-106.2);
- add decimals and mixed decimals through ten thousandths with regrouping (M6NS-Id-106.2); and
- solve one-step or multi-step routine and non-routine problems involving addition of decimals and mixed decimals using appropriate problem-solving strategies and tools (M6NS-Id-108.2).
Lessons in this module
- Lesson 1: Adding Decimals and Mixed Decimals through Ten Thousandths Without Regrouping. Learners line up decimal points and add place by place when no column adds up to 10 or more.
- Lesson 2: Adding Decimals and Mixed Decimals through Ten Thousandths With Regrouping. Learners carry digits to the next place when a column adds up to 10 or more. They also solve word problems using a four-step method and a pattern strategy.
Adding decimals step by step
Both lessons use the same basic rules, listed in the module’s “What I Have Learned” part. When two decimals are added:
- align the decimal points in a straight column;
- use 0 as a placeholder if needed;
- add just like adding whole numbers, regrouping if necessary;
- place a decimal point in the sum;
- align the decimal point in the sum with the decimal points in the addends.
Without regrouping (Lesson 1)
The lesson opens with John riding a motorcycle to San Miguel Church. He travels 0.0437 km in the first minute and 3.6112 km in the next 10 minutes. To find the total, write the numbers in a column with the decimal points lined up. Then add from right to left:
| Place | Digits added | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Ten thousandths | 7 + 2 | 9 |
| Thousandths | 3 + 1 | 4 |
| Hundredths | 4 + 1 | 5 |
| Tenths | 0 + 6 | 6 |
| Ones | 0 + 3 | 3 |
Place the decimal point between the ones and the tenths: 0.0437 + 3.6112 = 3.6549. John traveled 3.6549 kilometers.
With regrouping (Lesson 2)
Sharon sells banana chips. She walks 3.2547 km to school and later 1.5569 km to the next barangay. Adding 3.2547 + 1.5569:
- Ten thousandths: 7 + 9 = 16. Write 6, carry 1.
- Thousandths: 1 + 4 + 6 = 11. Write 1, carry 1.
- Hundredths: 1 + 5 + 5 = 11. Write 1, carry 1.
- Tenths: 1 + 2 + 5 = 8.
- Ones: 3 + 1 = 4.
The sum is 4.8116, so Sharon traveled 4.8116 kilometers in all.
Solving word problems
Lesson 2 teaches a four-step method: Understand, Plan, Solve, Check.
- Understand: find what is asked and the given facts.
- Plan: spot the word clue (such as “together”), choose the operation, and write a number sentence.
- Solve: line up the decimal points and add, regrouping if needed.
- Check: estimate or work backward to see if the answer is reasonable.
Example 1: Charlyn has 1.28 m of pink cloth, 1.56 m of green cloth, and 0.459 m of yellow cloth. The word clue is “together”, so the number sentence is 1.28 + 1.56 + 0.459 = N. The total is 3.299 meters.
Example 2: Leena saves ₱35.50 on Monday, ₱38.75 on Tuesday, ₱42.00 on Wednesday, and ₱45.25 on Thursday. Each day she saves ₱3.25 more than the day before. Using this pattern, she saves ₱48.50 on Friday, ₱51.75 on Saturday, and ₱55.00 on Sunday. Her savings for seven days total ₱316.75. The module then checks the answer by subtracting each day’s savings in reverse, working backward to Monday’s ₱35.50.
How to use this module
Each lesson follows the usual SLM parts: What I Know (pretest), What’s In, What’s New, What is It, What’s More, What I Have Learned, What I Can Do, Assessment, and Additional Activities. The practice items include everyday problems about savings, harvests, market purchases, and distances.
- Learners: Start with the What I Know pretest to check what you already know. Then work through the parts in order. Write all answers on a separate answer sheet, not on the module. Check your work with the answer key at the end of each lesson, and be honest when you use it.
- Parents and facilitators: Help your child line up the decimal points and remember to carry when a column reaches 10 or more. Ask your child to estimate whether an answer makes sense.
- Teachers: The printed competency codes match the Mathematics 6 MELC. Use the Assessment items to check mastery, and the Additional Activities, which include non-routine pattern problems, for enrichment.
Frequently asked questions
What grade and quarter is this module for?
It is for Grade 6 Mathematics, Quarter 1, Module 5. It covers adding decimals and mixed decimals through ten thousandths.
What competencies does the module cover?

Lesson 2 – Adding Decimals and Mixed Decimals through Ten Thousandths With Regrouping
This lesson will help you understand the skills in adding decimals and mixed decimals through ten thousandths with regrouping.
What’s In
Find the value of n by getting the sum of the given numbers. Write your answers on your answer sheet.
1.) 2.7019 + 0.2410 = n 2.) 84.2354 + 5.5635 = n 3.) 90.4705 + 0.3293 = n 4.) 2.823 + 1.036 = n 5.) 26.7113 + 0.026 = n
What’s New
Read and understand the problem.
Sharon’s mother told her to sell banana chips to her classmates. She travelled a distance of 3.2547 kilometers from her home to school. In the afternoon, she went to the next barangay to sell the remaining banana chips and she travelled another 1.5569 kilometers. What is the total distance did Sharon travel?
What is It
What information is given in the problem? What should be done first so that you will have an idea on what to do? How are you going to solve for the total distance that she travels?
Here are the steps:
- Write and arrange the numbers vertically. Align the decimal points.
Solve: 3.2547 + 1.5569 = N
3.2547
+ 1.5569
-------
- Add the ten thousandths place. Regroup if necessary.
1
3.2547
+ 1.5569
-------
6
7 + 9 = 16
- Add the thousandths place, and then regroup if necessary.
1 1
3.2547
+ 1.5569
-------
16
1 + 4 + 6 = 11
- Add the hundredths place, and then regroup if necessary.
1 1 1
3.2547
+ 1.5569
------
116
1 + 5 + 5 = 11
- Add the tenths place, and then regroup if necessary.
1 1 1
3.2547
+ 1.5569
------
8116
1 + 2 + 5 = 8
- Place the decimal point.
1 1 1
3.2547
+ 1.5569
------
.8116
- Add the whole numbers. Add the ones.
1 1 1
3.2547
+ 1.5569
------
4.8116
3 + 1 = 4
So, 3.2547 + 1.5569 = 4.81116.
Therefore, Sharon has travelled 4.8116 kilometers in all.

Example 2:
If Leena saved ₱35.50 on Monday, ₱38.75 on Tuesday, ₱42.00 on Wednesday, ₱45.25 on Thursday and so on, how much will she save from her daily allowance for seven days?
To solve the problem above, follow these steps:
Understand:
a. What is asked?
Answer: The amount she saves from her daily allowance for seven days.
b. What are the given facts?
Answer: ₱35.50 – savings on Monday ₱38.75 – savings on Tuesday ₱42.00 – savings on Wednesday ₱45.25 – savings on Thursday
Plan:
a. What is the word/phrase clue?
Answer: savings for seven days
c. What operation to be used?
Answer: addition
d. How do you solve it?
Answer: Finding pattern strategy
Solve:
To determine the savings of Leena for seven days, we construct a table this way.
| Days | Monday | Tuesday | Wednesday | Thursday | Friday | Saturday | Sunday |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Savings | ₱35.50 | ₱38.75 | ₱42.00 | ₱45.25 | ? | ? | ? |
| Pattern | ₱3.25 | ₱3.25 | ₱3.25 |
[transcriber’s note: the Pattern row holds drawn brace marks spanning Monday to Thursday, with the ₱3.25 labels printed beneath them]
Observe the savings of Leena from Monday to Thursday. The difference of Monday and Tuesday savings is ₱3.25. The same is true with Tuesday and Wednesday, and Wednesday and Thursday. With this, you can see a difference of ₱3.25 per day. Thus, you can say that there is a pattern of adding ₱3.25 in each succeeding day.
To project her savings on Friday, we add ₱3.25 to the Thursday savings which is ₱45.25 to get ₱48.50. To get the savings on Saturday, add ₱3.25 to ₱48.50 to make it ₱51.75. To get the savings for Sunday, add ₱3.25 to ₱51.75 to make it ₱55.00. Then, add all the amount she saved from Monday to Sunday to get the total amount of savings for seven days.
| Days | Savings | |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | ₱35.50 | |
| Tuesday | ₱35.50 + ₱3.25 = ₱38.75 | ₱38.75 |
