This is the Self-Learning Module (SLM) for Mathematics Grade 4, Quarter 1, Module 4: Rounding Numbers to the Nearest Thousands and Ten Thousands. It is part of DepEd’s Alternative Delivery Mode and was developed by DepEd Region V. It builds on the previous module, where learners compared and ordered numbers up to hundred thousand. After this module, learners should be able to round numbers to the nearest thousands and ten thousands.
The module explains why rounding matters in daily life. It helps us estimate travel distance, the time needed for tasks, large amounts of things, and money when budgeting.
What learners will learn
The module has one learning objective:
- Round numbers to the nearest thousands and ten thousands.
Parts of this module
The module follows the usual SLM parts, in this order:
- What I Need to Know: the objective of the module.
- What I Know: a 10-item pretest on rounding to the nearest thousands and ten thousands, including word problems.
- What’s In: a review of rounding to the nearest tens and hundreds, for example 53 becomes 50 and 692 becomes 700.
- What’s New: a word problem about Jayson, who helps at his family’s Balloons and Party Needs Store, which delivered 15 678 balloons in one week.
- What is It: the lesson, using a number line and step-by-step rounding rules.
- What’s More: Activity 1, Assessment 1, Activity 2, and Assessment 2 for practice.
- What I Have Learned: a summary of the rounding rules.
- What I Can Do: a real-life task using school district enrollment figures.
- Assessment: a 10-item post-test.
- Additional Activities: number puzzles for extra practice.
- Answer Key: answers for the activities and tests.
What is rounding?
The module defines rounding as the process of finding the nearest value to a certain number.
It starts with the balloon problem: about how many thousand balloons is 15 678? On a number line from 15 000 to 16 000, 15 678 sits closer to 16 000 than to 15 000. So 15 678 rounded to the nearest thousands is 16 000. About 16 000 balloons were delivered.
Steps for rounding numbers
The module gives these steps:
- Find the rounding digit. This is the digit in the place you are rounding to. In 15 678, rounding to the nearest thousands, the rounding digit is 5.
- Look at the digit to its right. In 15 678, that digit is 6.
- If it is less than 5 (0, 1, 2, 3, or 4), round down. Keep the rounding digit the same and change all digits to its right to zero.
- If it is 5 or greater (5, 6, 7, 8, or 9), round up. Add 1 to the rounding digit and change all digits to its right to zero.
Since 6 is 5 or greater, add 1 to the 5. The 5 becomes 6, and the digits after it become zeros. So 15 678 becomes 16 000.
Examples from the module
| Number | Nearest thousands | Nearest ten thousands |
|---|---|---|
| 93 856 | 94 000 | 90 000 |
| 36 410 | 36 000 | 40 000 |
| 20 917 | 21 000 | 20 000 |
| 42 739 | 43 000 | 40 000 |
| 81 357 | 81 000 | 80 000 |
When you round to the nearest thousands, look at the hundreds digit. In 36 410, the hundreds digit is 4, so the number rounds down to 36 000.
When you round to the nearest ten thousands, look at the thousands digit. In 36 410, the thousands digit is 6, so the number rounds up to 40 000.
Real-life problems in the activities
The activities use situations that learners will recognize:
- relief goods given to families in Sorsogon City
- savings in a bank
- cloth face masks sewn for frontliners
- donations of rice and canned goods
- mahogany seedlings planted in Bacon district
- volunteers for Brigada Eskwela (the yearly school clean-up and repair drive)
- enrollment in the Schools District of San Marcelino from school year 2016-2017 to 2020-2021
The Additional Activities also ask learners to think in reverse. For example: what is the biggest number that rounds to 80 000 when rounded to the nearest ten thousands? What is the smallest number that rounds to 45 000 when rounded to the nearest thousands?
How to use this module
- Learners: Take the pretest (What I Know) first, then work through each part in order. Write your answers on a separate sheet of paper, not on the module. Check your work using the answer key after each activity, and be honest when you use it. Finish with the Assessment to see how much you learned.
- Parents and facilitators: Guide your child through the parts in order. Make sure the answer key is used only after an activity is done. The module asks learners to approach their teacher or facilitator if they get a low score or have trouble.
- Teachers: Use the pretest to see who needs more help before the lesson. Use the What I Can Do enrollment table and the Assessment to check mastery. The Additional Activities work well as enrichment for learners who finish early.

[illustration: Jayson holding balloons in front of the Balloons and Party Needs Store, with an order board on the wall]
Answer the given problem.
What is It
Let us see if we have the same answer. You can answer the question by rounding 15 678 to the nearest thousands.
What do we mean by rounding?
Rounding is the process of finding the nearest value to a certain number.
Let us study the number line below.
[chart: number line; no number or title printed]
15 000 15 100 15 200 15 300 15 400 15 500 15 600 15 700 15 800 15 900 16 000
Box above the number line: 15 678
To which number is 15 678 closer, 15 000 or 16 000?
Since 15 678 is closer to 16 000, we can say that 15 678 becomes 16 000 when rounded to the nearest thousands. Hence, about 16 000 balloons were delivered at the end of the week.
We can also round off numbers using the following steps:
Identify the digit in the rounding place.
This is called the rounding digit. 15 678Identify the digit to the right of the rounding place. 15⑥78
2.1 If the digit to the right of the rounding place is less than 5 (0, 1, 2, 3 or 4), round the number down by leaving the rounding digit the same. Then, change all digits to the right of the rounding digit to zero.
2.2 If the digit to the right of the rounding place is 5 or greater than 5 (6, 7, 8 or 9), round the number up by adding one to the rounding digit. Then, change all digits to the right of the rounding digit to zero.
15⑥78 [illustration: arrows from the digit 6 labeled “digit at the right of the rounding place” and from the underlined digit 5 labeled “rounding place”]
digit at the right of the rounding place rounding place
Let us go over again,
✓ The underlined digit 5 is the digit at the rounding place. ✓ 6 is the digit at the right of the rounding place. ✓ Since 6 belongs to 5-9 group of numbers (5 or greater than 5), add one to the digit at the rounding place (add 1 to 5). ✓ Then change all the digit at the right of the rounding place value to zero.
6 000 15 678 → 16 000
✓ Therefore, 16 678 when rounded to the nearest thousands is 16 000.
Answer: About 16 000 balloons were delivered at the end of the week.
Let’s study these examples.
| Number | Rounded to the nearest Thousands | Rounded to the nearest Ten Thousands |
|---|---|---|
| 93 856 | 94 000 | 90 000 |
| 36 410 | 36 000 | 40 000 |
