This is Module 8 of Health Optimizing Physical Education 1 (HOPE 1) for Quarters 1 and 2, a Senior High School self-learning module from DepEd Region 4A CALABARZON (First Edition, 2021). It has one lesson, “Value of Participating in Physical Activities.” It helps learners see why staying active matters, tell moderate activities apart from vigorous ones, and understand the health risks of an inactive (sedentary) life.
What learners will learn
After going through this module, learners are expected to:
- Recognize the value of optimizing health through participation in physical activities.
- Differentiate moderate activities and vigorous activities.
- Identify the physical activities that fall under each category.
- Explain the importance of physical activity.
- Identify the effects of a sedentary life.
Lesson in this module
- Lesson 1: Value of Participating in Physical Activities. It explains physical fitness and physical activity, the difference between moderate and vigorous activities, and why an inactive lifestyle raises the risk of disease.
Key ideas in the lesson
Physical fitness, physical activity, and exercise
- Physical fitness is a condition that lets the body cope well with the demands of daily activities and still have energy left for leisure.
- Physical activity is any bodily movement caused by muscle contractions that uses up energy.
- Exercise is physical activity that is planned, purposeful, repetitive, and structured.
- The module reminds learners to follow the principle of progression: do moderate activities first before moving on to vigorous ones.
Moderate and vigorous activities
The module’s tests and answer key give clear examples of each category:
| Category | Examples from the module |
|---|---|
| Moderate physical activity | Walking, dancing, some household chores, helping in and outside the home |
| Vigorous physical activity | Activities that raise the heart rate and make you sweat more, such as playing collegiate basketball, volleyball, or soccer |
According to the answer key, teenagers are recommended to be physically active for at least 60 minutes a day.
Why a sedentary life is risky
The World Health Organization (WHO) considers a sedentary or inactive lifestyle a high-risk factor for many noncommunicable diseases. Facts the module asks learners to remember include:
- In 2010, the WHO identified lack of physical activity as the fourth leading risk factor for global mortality.
- Not being physically active causes about 30% of ischemic heart disease and about 21 to 25% of breast cancer.
- Type 2 diabetes is a common disease linked to inactivity.
- In 2008, the Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI) reported that 86% of Filipino high school students in Manila failed to meet the recommended level of physical activity.
Other terms and programs to know
- The Filipino Pyramid Activity Guide was developed in 2000 by the Philippine Association for the Study of Obesity and Overweight.
- FITT includes Frequency, Type, and Time (the tests ask which word is not part of it).
- Hypertrophy is the state of the muscles in which the muscle fibers increase.
- The DOH and WHO promote an active lifestyle through campaigns such as Hataw, E-di Exercise, Mag-HL Tayo, and Go4Health, which aim to reduce sedentary living.
Activities in the module
- What I Know: a 15-item multiple-choice pretest.
- What’s In: a short, honest self-check of your activity level (chores, TV time, free time, and how often you do moderate activity). This is not a test.
- What’s More: make a concept map about physical activities based on two pictures.
- What I Have Learned: rate 10 statements on a scale of 1 to 5, such as “I feel energized after I exercise.”
- What I Can Do: list your daily activities as healthy ones to continue or unhealthy ones to avoid, then create an infographic on the importance of an active lifestyle using free tools such as Canva, PiktoChart, Infogram, or Venngage. You may post it online or draw it for your barangay hall’s bulletin board. It is graded with a rubric on content, creativity and originality, and layout.
- Assessment: a 15-item multiple-choice post-test.
- Additional Activities: write what you will do and avoid to optimize your health, plus three realizations about the importance of physical activity.
How to use this module
- Learners: Start with the pretest to check what you already know. Then go through the parts in order. Write all answers on a separate sheet of paper and do not mark the module. Answer keys are included for each activity and test, so use them honestly to check your work after answering.
- Parents and guardians: Help your child keep a steady schedule, and encourage the active habits the module asks for, such as helping with household chores or walking in the neighborhood.
- Teachers: The infographic rubric is ready to use for grading. Most activities have open answers, so the answer key gives fixed answers only for the pretest and the post-test.
