This is the Health 7 Quarter 1 Module 5, “Health Services,” a self-learning module (SLM) for Grade 7 learners. It was developed by DepEd MIMAROPA Region (Alternative Delivery Mode, First Edition, 2020). It explains the health services offered free in schools and communities through the government’s Primary Health Care program, so learners know where and how to have their health checked.
The module builds on the previous lesson about health appraisal and screening tests. It also asks learners to share what they learn and become advocates of health for their classmates, family, and community.
On this page 8 sections
What learners will learn
After going through this module, learners are expected to:
- avail of health services in the school and in the community in order to appraise one’s health (H7GD-Ii-j-24)
Lessons in this module
The module has one lesson:
- Lesson 1 – Growth and Development: Health Services. It introduces the agencies and programs that offer health services, explains what each service does, and includes activities that check the learner’s understanding.
Key ideas: what health services are
The module gives two definitions:
- Health service is a public service providing medical care.
- Health services consist of medical professionals, organizations, and ancillary health care workers who give medical care to those in need. They serve patients, families, communities, and populations. They cover emergency, preventive, rehabilitative, long-term, hospital, diagnostic, primary, palliative, and home care. The aim is care that is accessible, high quality, and centered on the patient.
The government believes that a strong nation needs a healthy citizenry. To reach this goal, the Department of Health (DOH) promotes community health through Primary Health Care. It works with the Department of Education (DepEd), barangays, communities, and government and non-government organizations.
Primary health care services in school and community
| Health service | What it does |
|---|---|
| Dental Health Program | Dental examinations and procedures, such as pulling milk teeth and giving prescriptions for toothaches |
| Medical Morbidity Clinic | Free medicines for simple health problems like stomach ache, fever, cough, and colds, prescribed by assigned medical practitioners |
| Child Health Care | Immunization against measles, mumps, polio, and influenza; it also teaches water safety and sanitation to control diarrheal diseases |
| Nutrition Program | Runs Operation Timbang (weighing) to check that a child’s weight fits their age (BMI); gives underweight children food supplements such as vitamins or free healthy snacks |
| Deworming | Removes intestinal parasites in children using Mebendazole, done every January and July (National Deworming Month) |
| School Feeding | Gives free, healthy meals to improve learners’ nutrition; it also helps raise attendance |
| Medical Check-up | Checks weight, height, eye condition, and heartbeat for early detection of diseases or abnormalities |
| Mental Hygiene | Centers for adolescents dealing with depression, abuse, and stress |
| Blood Testing | Tests the blood for disorders and conditions such as anemia, leukemia, and blood infection |
| Pharmacy Services | Delivers much-needed medicines to health centers so people can get them easily |
The module stresses one important point: these services are subsidized by the government. They must be available and given for free in your school and community.
Activities in the module
- What I Know (pretest): 5 true-or-false items and a 10-item matching test on health services, with a rubric for the score.
- What’s In: unscramble the names of screening tests from the previous lesson, such as hearing test, scoliosis test, and vision test.
- What’s New: a word maze of health services and agencies (DOH, DepEd, DILG, DSWD), with two guide questions.
- What’s More: a spider map of health services available in your school and community, a “4 Pics, 1 Word” game, a “Pick Me” identification activity, and a one-line health slogan (5 to 10 words) on short bond paper.
- What I Have Learned: a “Health Diary” reflection with sentence starters.
- What I Can Do: a 10-item self-check of your health habits, scored with smiling faces. You also make a health advocacy poster or a short song or poem, each with a rubric.
- Assessment (post-test): true-or-false and matching items on the same content as the pretest.
- Additional Activities: draw your “dream clinic” and sort health services into school and community groups (“Fit Me!”).
How to use this module
- Learners: Start with the pretest, then work through each part in order. Write your answers in your activity notebook or on a separate sheet, not on the module. Finish with the post-test. Answer keys are provided, so use them honestly and only after answering.
- Parents: Help your child find out which health services are available in your barangay health center and school. Several activities, such as the spider map, ask about these.
- Teachers: The word maze is meant to be done on a photocopy you provide. The slogan, poster, song or poem, and dream clinic need short bond paper and come with scoring criteria. Check the pretest and post-test answers against the lesson table before using the answer key.
If learners have questions or trouble with the activities, the module asks them to consult their teacher or facilitator.

Were you amazed of the maze? Are you now familiar to the health services in your school and in your community?
This time, let us discuss the different health services that are being offered in your school and in your community as well. Are these for free or not?
Time to Read!
Health service is a public service providing medical care.
Health services consist of medical professionals, organizations, and ancillary health care workers who provide medical care to those in need. Health services serve patients, families, communities, and populations. They cover emergency, preventative, rehabilitative, long-term, hospital, diagnostic, primary, palliative, and home care. These services are centered on making health care accessible, high quality, and patient centered.
Our government believes that a strong nation needs healthy citizenry. In order to achieve this, the Department of Health promoted community health in partnership with the Department of Education, community, barangay, government and non-governmental organizations through the program called Primary Health Care.
Primary health care programs in the school and community
| Health services | Functions |
|---|---|
| Dental Health program | Conduct dental-related examinations and procedures like extraction of milk teeth, giving prescriptions for tooth aches, etc. |
| Medical Morbidity clinic | Provide free medicines for simple health problems, prescribed by medical practitioners assigned in a community or school. Examples include stomach ache, fever, cough and colds. |
| Child health care | Conduct immunization for children, since their immune system is relatively weak. This includes vaccines for Measles, Mumps, Polio and Influenza. It also aims to control Diarrheal diseases caused by microorganisms through educating children about water safety and sanitation. |
[transcriber’s note: table continued from the previous page]
| Health services | Functions |
|---|---|
| Nutrition program | Administers operation ‘timbang’ to ensure that children’s mass is appropriate for their age (BMI – Body Mass Index). To respond to the needs of children who are underweight, the community and school provides food supplementation through giving vitamins or free healthy snacks during recess. |
| Deworming | This service aims to eliminate intestinal parasites in children through the use of Mebendazole. This is being done every January and July (National Deworming Month) and has been a goal of Department of Health since then. |
| School feeding | This service aims to improve the nutritional status of students by providing free, healthy meals. It helps in increasing the attendance of students as well. |
| Medical check-up | Checks and informs children of their general health status such as weight, height, eye condition and heartbeat to guarantee good health and to provide early detection of diseases or abnormalities. |
| Mental hygiene | Provide centers for adolescents suffering from problems like depression, abuse and stress. These centers help in the overall physiological well-being of students. |
| Blood testing | Checks and tests components of the blood for possible disorders and conditions like anemia, leukemia and blood infection. |
| Pharmacy services | Delivers medicines to health centers for easier access. Examples are medicines which are badly needed by the locals in the community. |
