This is the Grade 7 Health Self-Learning Module for Quarter 4, Module 5: “Agencies Responsible for Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases.” It is part of DepEd’s Alternative Delivery Mode (First Edition, 2020) and was printed by DepEd MIMAROPA Region. Learners can use it at home to find out which government agencies, non-government organizations (NGOs), and private groups work to prevent and control non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in schools and communities.
What learners will learn
The module states one learning goal. After going through it, learners are expected to:
- identify agencies responsible for non-communicable disease (NCD) prevention and control.
The module explains that the government, NGOs, international development partners, and the private sector all help fight NCDs. Government agencies make their own policies and programs. NGOs and international partners reach people from the national level down to communities. Private companies invest in wellness programs for their workers and in community activities as part of their corporate social responsibility.
Why NCDs need attention
The module reminds learners that chronic NCDs start and continue because of shared risk behaviors, such as using tobacco, drinking alcohol, and not being physically active. It also notes that poor households living in unsafe, crowded informal settlements have few choices for healthy food, exercise, and healthy living.
Activity 4 links everyday habits to their effects on health. According to the answer key:
| Practice | Effect on health |
|---|---|
| Eating unhealthy foods | Leads to malnutrition |
| Drinking alcoholic beverages | Damages the liver |
| Smoking cigarettes | Weakens lung function and slows lung growth and development |
| Watching television for long hours | Affects social development |
| Too much use of gadgets | Causes weak eyesight, behavior problems, sleep disorders, and poor study habits that can lead to lower grades |
Agencies and organizations in the module
The answer key for Activity 6 sorts the agencies into three groups.
- Government agencies: Department of Health (DOH), Department of Education (DepEd), Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), Congress of the Philippines, and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP)
- Non-government organizations: Healthy Cities, HealthPro, Healthy Lifestyle Society of the Philippines (HLSP), Philippine Coalition for the Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases (PCPCNCD), Philippine Medical Association (PMA), ECOP, FCTC Alliance Philippines, SEATCA, HealthJustice, and the Episcopal Diocese of Northern Philippines (EDNP)
- Private sector: Healthy University and Novartis
What each one does
The module’s pretest and assessment match each agency with a program or role. Based on the answer key:
- DOH: responsible for equitable, sustainable, and quality health for Filipinos. In Activity 2, the DOH is linked to most of the listed programs, such as Hypertension Day, Cancer Awareness Month, the Smoking Cessation Program, the Occupational Health Program, and the Red Orchid Award (an anti-tobacco award).
- DepEd: regularly runs activities that promote school health and nutrition.
- DILG: linked to the “Perfect 10” program.
- DOLE: addresses lifestyle-related diseases of Filipino workers.
- Alliance for Healthy Cities: the “Healthy Cities” program.
- Healthy University: the “Health Promoting School” program.
- Novartis: the “Making Health a Lifestyle” program.
- HLSP: promotes the five components of a healthy lifestyle.
- PMA: addresses the rising epidemic of chronic NCDs.
- PCPCNCD: made up of forty organizations working to prevent and control NCDs.
- HealthPro: supports health-related behavior change communication activities in the country.
- FCTC Alliance Philippines: a non-stock, non-profit NGO working for a tobacco-free society.
- ECOP: develops special projects that promote healthy lifestyles among workers and their families.
- HealthJustice: bridges public health and law so Filipinos can make informed health choices.
- SEATCA: a multi-sectoral alliance that helps ASEAN countries put effective tobacco control policies in place.
Activity 7 applies this to real situations. For example, a family member working abroad who needs health security can turn to DOLE, a friend who wants to quit smoking can be helped by FCTC or SEATCA, and someone who dreams of a healthy school can look to Healthy University and DepEd.
How to use this module
The module follows the usual SLM parts: What I Need to Know, What I Know (pretest), What’s In, What’s New, What is It, What’s More, What I Have Learned, What I Can Do, Assessment, Additional Activities, and the Answer Key.
- Answer the pretest (Activity 1) first. It shows how much you already know.
- Work through Activities 2 to 7 in order. Write all answers in your activity notebook, not on the module.
- For Activity 5, make a poster on ways to prevent NCDs using cartolina, coloring materials, and a marking pen, then explain it briefly. A rubric scores presentation, content, and creativity.
- Take the assessment (Activity 8). It uses the same items as the pretest, so you can compare your scores.
- For the additional activity (Activity 9), write a 2 to 3 stanza poem about one agency, with 4 lines per stanza and your own title. It is scored out of 20 points.
- Check your work with the answer key only after you finish, and use it honestly.
For learners: read each direction carefully and ask your teacher or facilitator if a task is unclear.
For parents: help your child keep the module clean and remind them to use a separate sheet or notebook.
For teachers: the rubrics for the poster and the poem can guide grading, and the matching pretest and assessment make it easy to track progress.

What I Need to Know
[illustration: hand touching a circle, icon beside the heading]
Issues surrounding NCDs and other health risk factors have been getting the much needed attention not just from the government, but from non-government organizations, international development partners, and the private sector as well.
Different government agencies and institutions demonstrate their support to the cause by developing and implementing their own policies and programs in support of the national goal of preventing and controlling NCDs.
Likewise, NGOs and international development partners have thrown in their share, reaching more people at the national level down to the communities, while the private sector increasingly invests in wellness and healthy lifestyle programs for their employees and in reaching out to the communities through activities in support of their corporate social responsibility.
This module focuses on the agencies responsible for the prevention and control of non-communicable disease whether in school or in the community.
After going through this module, you are expected to identify agencies responsible for non-communicable disease (NCD) prevention and control.

What is It
[illustration: magnifying glass held in a hand, icon beside the heading]
Health is one of the most important concerns among Filipinos as we strongly value our well-being. However, many of us have paid no attention about the way we live because we are busy working on some important things in life that we easily forget the value of our health. In this case, it affects our bodies, minds, or even the cost of our lives. For these reasons, many people turn to the agencies seeking for help and support.
