Physical Education 8 Quarter 4 Module 1: Fitness on the Move

PE Grade 8 Q4 Module 1 self-learning module on health-related fitness components, fitness tests, BMI, scoring tables, activities, and answer key.

This is the Physical Education Grade 8 Quarter 4 Module 1, “Fitness on the Move,” a self-learning module from DepEd Caraga Region (First Edition, 2020). It has one lesson, Physical Activities Based on Assessment Results. Learners connect common physical fitness tests to the health-related fitness components, read their own test results, and set goals for improving their fitness.

On this page 7 sections

What learners will learn

The module’s competency is to review goals based on assessment results (PE8PF-IVa-34). By the end, learners should be able to:

  • identify the health-related fitness components of physical activities;
  • discuss the health-related fitness components in physical activities; and
  • compose a poem about the health-related components found in their daily activity routine.

The module explains that health-related fitness components promote health and help prevent the diseases and problems linked to physical activity. It defines four:

  • Cardiovascular endurance: the ability of the heart and circulatory system to supply enough oxygen to the muscles for a longer period of time.
  • Muscular strength: the ability of the muscles to produce effort or perform work in a short period of time.
  • Flexibility: the ability of a body part to move through its full range of motion at a joint.
  • Body composition: the proportion of body fat to lean body mass.

The activities also list muscular endurance as a fifth choice.

Fitness tests and how they are scored

The module matches each fitness test to a component. Its answer key gives these pairings:

Fitness testComponent
Height, weight, BMI, waist circumferenceBody composition
3-minute step testCardiovascular endurance
90-degree push-up, planking, curl-upsMuscular strength
Sit and reach, zipper testFlexibility

Body Mass Index (BMI)

BMI is weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared. Weight is recorded to the nearest 0.5 kg.

BMIClassification
Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 to 24.9Normal
25 to 29.9Overweight
30 and aboveObese

The module’s example: a learner who weighs 40 kg and is 1.37 m tall has a BMI of 21.28, which is normal.

Other tests

  • Planking: 51 seconds and above is Excellent, 46 to 50 seconds Very Good, 31 to 45 Good, 16 to 30 Fair, and 1 to 15 Needs Improvement.
  • Sit and reach: 61 cm and above is Excellent, 46 to 60.9 cm Very Good, 31 to 45.9 cm Good, 16 to 30.9 cm Fair, and 0 to 15.9 cm Needs Improvement.
  • Zipper test: fingers overlapping by 6 cm or more is Excellent, 4 to 5.9 cm Very Good, 2 to 3.9 cm Good, and 0.1 to 1.9 cm Fair. Fingers that just touch need improvement, and a gap of 0.1 cm or wider is Poor.
  • 3-minute step test: record the 60-second heart rate after the activity.
  • The module also has scoring tables for the 90-degree push-up and waist circumference.

A sample Physical Fitness Form shows how a Grade 8 learner records pre-test and post-test results. In the example, his push-ups improved from 7 (Needs Improvement) to 11, and his sit and reach went from Good to Very Good.

Activities in the module

  • What I Know: a 15-item multiple-choice pretest.
  • What’s In: match eight fitness tests to their components.
  • What’s New: read “Body Goal,” a short story about Joerdan, a teenager who exercises to lose excess body fat, and answer three questions.
  • What’s More: a word search of fitness terms, sorting ten home activities by component, and identifying the components shown in pictures of fitness tests.
  • What I Have Learned: complete sentences about your own test results.
  • What I Can Do: keep a Monday-to-Friday fitness log (BMI, step test, push-ups, sit and reach), write a slogan on why fitness matters, and make a TikTok video of your daily physical activities. Rubrics are provided for the slogan and the video.
  • Assessment: a 15-item multiple-choice post-test.
  • Additional Activities: list the household chores of family members and their components, then rate yourself with a 10-item self-check.

How to use this module

  • Learners: Take the pretest first. Then work through the parts in order and write all answers in your activity notebook, not on the module. Do the at-home fitness tests carefully, and check your work honestly with the answer key at the back.
  • Parents: Help your child measure height, weight, and heart rate for the daily fitness log, and watch over the push-ups and planking. The family chores activity also needs your input.
  • Teachers: The scoring tables and the sample fitness form help learners read their own results. The slogan and TikTok rubrics can be used to grade those outputs. Ask learners to contact you if any task is unclear.

Introductory Message

This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our dear learners, can continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities, questions, directions, exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you to understand each lesson.

Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you step-by-step as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.

Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in each SLM. This will tell you if you need to proceed on completing this module or if you need to ask your facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for better understanding of the lesson. At the end of each module, you need to answer the post-test to self-check your learning. Answer keys are provided for each activity and test. We trust that you will be honest in using these.

In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teacher are also provided to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on how they can best help you on your home-based learning.

Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any part of this SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises and tests. And read the instructions carefully before performing each task.

If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in answering the tasks in this module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator.

Lesson 1 Physical Activities Based on Assessment Results

Just like any other sports or games, dancing is also a physical activity that can promote lifelong fitness and wellness. It is a good source of exercise that could help develop grace and poise. It can even help in maintaining good health as it highlights health-related fitness components such as cardio-vascular endurance, flexibility, and strength.

Activity 1: Inspiration

Directions: Read and paragraph inside the box and answer the questions below. Write your answer in your activity notebook.

Body Goal

Joerdan is a bullied teenager because of his obesity. One day when he woke up, he realized he had to go exercise to lessen his excessive body fats. He tied his shoes, suited his fitness garments and began his routine. Every time he does his workout he starts with a warm up exercise to release the body heat and avoid muscle pain and cramps. After a month of intensive training and exercising he loses 80 pounds of the body fats and gains 22 pounds of muscle. Now, Joerdan is walking with a head held up high with a body fit his age, no more bullies and more on likes.

  1. As a student, do you find Joerdan as an inspiration for fitness? Explain.
  2. Put yourself in Joerdan’s shoes, what will be your ways to lessen your obesity?
  3. Will you recommend Joerdan’s way of exercising to someone you know? Explain.
What is It

Physical activities play a vital role in the total development of a person. The sustainability of performing different physical activities depends on the interest and ability of every individual. Each physical activity can be classified into different health-related components.

What is a health-related fitness component?

Health-related fitness Components. These are components that promote health and prevent the diseases and problems associated with physical activities. The four components are described as follows:

  1. Cardiovascular Endurance. This is the ability of the heart and circulatory system to supply enough oxygen to muscles for a longer period of time.
  2. Muscular Strength. This is the ability of the muscles to produce effort or perform work in a short period of time.
  3. Flexibility. This is the ability of the body part to move on it’s a full range of motion at a joint.
  4. Body Composition. This is the proportion rate of body fat to lean body mass.
