This is the Grade 8 Health self-learning module for Quarter 3, Module 7: “Guard for Wellness.” It was developed by DepEd Region XIII (Caraga) for home-based learning (Alternative Delivery Mode). It teaches learners about the Philippine government agencies that prevent and control communicable diseases. By the end, learners can name these agencies, explain what each one does, and show why their work matters.
On this page 6 sections
What learners will learn
The module has one lesson, Lesson 1: Agencies for Prevention and Control of Communicable Diseases. After the lesson, learners are expected to:
- Identify agencies responsible for communicable disease prevention and control (H8DD-IIIf-h23)
- determine the roles of different agencies in disease prevention and control
- express appreciation of the importance of agencies in disease prevention and control
Key ideas: the agencies and their roles
The lesson begins with health promotion and disease prevention. These programs aim to keep people healthy. They encourage people and communities to choose healthy behaviors, take preventive measures, and lower their risk of both communicable and noncommunicable diseases.
The lesson then presents six government agencies and institutions that work together on health and disease control.
| Agency | What it is | Its role in disease prevention and control |
|---|---|---|
| Department of Health (DOH) | The principal health agency in the Philippines. It ensures that all Filipinos can get basic public health services. | Plans and carries out programs that prepare the country to respond to diseases that could reach pandemic levels |
| Department of Education (DepEd) | Handles policies, plans, and programs for formal and non-formal basic education | Gives learners sustainable, holistic school health programs that support healthier behavior and better learning |
| Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) | Provides social protection and poverty reduction for the poor, vulnerable, and disadvantaged | Mobilizes community health providers to give comprehensive public health services, and runs information drives and assistance for all Filipinos |
| Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) | Keeps peace and order, ensures public safety, and strengthens local government units (LGUs) | Helps LGUs deliver services to their people effectively and efficiently |
| Disease Prevention and Control Bureau (DPCB) | Leads and aligns all efforts to prevent and control diseases | Improves disease-control policies and programs, and gives technical help, training, and advice |
| Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) | A task force formed by the executive branch to respond to emerging infectious diseases | Assesses, monitors, contains, controls, and prevents the spread of possible epidemics |
The module also introduces Republic Act 3573, “An Act Providing for the Prevention and Suppression of Dangerous Communicable Diseases and for other Purposes.” This law requires individuals and health facilities to report notifiable diseases to health authorities. These reports give the government evidence it uses to make health policies.
The module uses COVID-19 as a real example. Questions ask which agency sets health policies during the crisis (DOH) and which agency created alternative delivery modes so children could keep learning at home (DepEd).
Activities in the module
- What I Know: a 15-item multiple-choice pretest
- What’s In: a graphic organizer for diseases that government programs can prevent, with dengue and the National Dengue Prevention program as the example
- Activity 1. Re-ACT!: questions about Republic Act 3573
- Activity 1. Matchy-Match!: match DOH, DSWD, DepEd, DPCB, and DILG with their roles
- Activity 2. What Can You Say?: explain why these agencies are important
- What I Have Learned: sentence starters to finish, including how you as a student can help prevent disease
- What I Can Do: make a two-page leaflet about the programs of an agency in your locality. A rubric scores content, organization, and creativity. A sample leaflet on the DOH dengue program, “Tiny Bite: HUGE THREAT!”, shows the expected format.
- Assessment: a 15-item multiple-choice post-test
- Additional Activities: list and explain at least five health programs in your community. TB DOTS is given as the first example.
How to use this module
Learners: Start with the pretest to check what you already know. Then work through each part in order. Write all answers in your activity notebook or on a separate sheet, not on the module itself. Take the post-test at the end to check your learning, and use the answer key honestly.
Parents: Help your child plan the leaflet project. Talk together about the health programs you know in your barangay or town, such as dengue control or TB treatment.
Teachers: The leaflet rubric and the Additional Activities make good outputs to collect. Check the answer key before you use it for grading. Some printed answers do not match the lesson content. For example, the lesson describes DILG as the agency that strengthens LGUs, but some answer-key letters point to other choices.
