Arts 8 Quarter 2 Module 2: Characteristics of Arts and Crafts in East Asian Countries

Grade 8 Arts Q2 Module 2 on the arts and crafts of China, Japan, and Korea: calligraphy, origami, anime, manga, masks, drums, and K-pop, with activities.

This is the Grade 8 Arts Quarter 2, Module 2 self-learning module, “Characteristics of Arts and Crafts in East Asian Countries.” It was developed by DepEd Caraga Region under the Alternative Delivery Mode (First Edition, 2020) for learners studying at home. It takes learners on a “trip” through China, Japan, and Korea so they can identify the art forms each country is known for and what makes each one distinct.

On this page 8 sections

What learners will learn

After going through this module, learners are expected to:

  • Identify characteristics of arts and crafts in specific countries in East Asia (A8EL-IIa-2):
    • China: Chinese painting and calligraphy
    • Japan: origami, woodblock printing, theater masks, face painting, and anime and manga
    • Korea: theater masks, drums, and K-pop

The module has one lesson, “Characteristics of Arts and Crafts of East Asian Countries.” It opens with the idea that East Asian art expresses the human understanding of the relationship between nature and people.

Arts and crafts of China

  • Gong-bi is court-style painting. It is often highly colored and usually shows figures or stories.
  • Shuimo is ink and brush painting. It expresses the abstract beauty of lines and rhythm through the arrangement of lines and dots, and it reflects a person’s emotions.
  • Calligraphy is a visual art related to writing: the art of beautiful handwriting. Paper and silk were popular materials, and poets wrote calligraphy on their paintings.

The module notes that early Chinese painting used yellowish-brown, dim colors and often showed hunting scenes on cave walls and stone blocks. Paintings can appear on hanging scrolls, hand scrolls, album sheets, walls, lacquer ware, folding screens, and other media.

Arts and crafts of Japan

  • Origami is the art of paper folding. The word comes from ori (folding) and kami (paper). Traditional origami turns a single square sheet into a sculpture without cutting, gluing, taping, or marking it. Common models are flowers, dolls, geometric shapes, and animals such as birds and fish.
  • Woodblock printing prints text, images, or patterns by carving them onto a block of wood. It started in China, was used throughout East Asia, and was adapted in Japan during the Edo period (1603-1867). Scenes from everyday life were the most common themes.
  • Japanese masks used in theater have dramatic lines and shapes in different colors, each color representing a different quality.
  • Face painting is painting or drawing designs on a person’s face as decoration. Chinese and Japanese performers paint their faces based on the character they play.
  • Anime is a style of animation popular in Japanese films. Characters often have proportional bodies but exaggerated, brightly colored heads, hair, and facial expressions. The module adds that anime focuses less on movement and more on realistic settings and camera effects like panning, zooming, and angle shots.
  • Manga are comics or graphic novels from Japan. Characters usually have large eyes, small mouths, and unusual hair colors. Most manga follow a style developed in Japan in the late 19th century.

Arts and crafts of Korea

  • Theater masks were first used in religious activities and later in entertainment such as dramas and dances. They are painted according to the character and are grouped into religious masks (to ward off evil spirits) and artistic masks (for dances and theater). Other names for Korean masks are gamyeon, gwangdae, chorani, talbak, and talbagaji.
  • Drums are important in traditional Korean music, from folk music to court music.
DrumDescription
JangguDouble-headed, hourglass-shaped drum
BukBarrel drum
GalgoDouble-headed, hourglass-shaped drum played with two sticks
DoSingle pellet drum on a pole
  • K-pop (Korean pop) is a genre of popular music from South Korea, described as a fusion of synthesized music, sharp dance routines, and fashionable, colorful outfits. Groups named in the module include EXO, Black Pink, Seventeen, BTS, Big Bang, Red Velvet, and Twice.

Activities in this module

  • What I Know: a 15-item multiple-choice pretest.
  • What’s New: sort words from a word pool (such as calligraphy, origami, K-pop, manga, drum) into Japan, Korea, or China.
  • What’s More, Activity 1 (Find Me): a word search with 10 hidden words connected to Japan’s arts and crafts.
  • What’s More, Activity 2: label 15 words J (Japan), C (China), or K (Korea).
  • What I Can Do (It’s Anime Time!): draw and color an original anime character on A4 bond paper, scored on cleanliness, creativity and workmanship, and relevance.
  • Assessment: a 15-item multiple-choice post-test.
  • Additional Activity (My Dream Country!): draw a scene from China, Japan, or Korea that you would like to visit and write a short description.

How to use this module

Learners: Start with the pretest to see what you already know, then work through the parts in order. Write all answers on a separate sheet of paper and do not mark the module. Take the assessment at the end to check your learning, and use the answer key honestly.

Parents: Help your child prepare the materials for the drawing tasks: A4 bond paper, a pencil, an eraser, and crayons, watercolor, or other coloring materials available at home. Encourage them to ask the teacher when a task is unclear.

Teachers: The two drawing tasks come with rubrics (30, 20, 10, or 5 points per category) you can use for grading. Review the answer key before using it, because some keyed answers do not match the lesson discussion.

Face painting-the act of painting or drawing designs on a person’s face as a form of ornamentationTo represent drama, two masks, one depicting tragedy and the other depicting comedy was inspired by Greek theatre.
Anime – style of animation popular in Japanese filmsOne of the most distinctive characteristics of anime resides in the characters’ faces. Characters may possess bodies with relatively proportional body parts, the heads, hair, and facial expressions are usually exaggerated and brightly colored.

Chinese Calligraphy

Did you know that Chinese painting started way back from early people? They used yellowish-brown and dim colour. Antique images often presented hunting scenes of man chasing several animals such as horses, lions, rhinoceros, mammoths and others. Prehistoric paintings were usually seen at the walls of caves, block of stone but some are found in Chin

In calligraphy, the paper and silk were the popular materials which paintings use. Poets write their calligraphy on their paintings.

Painting can be on scrolls, such as hanging scrolls or hand scrolls, album sheets, walls, lacquer ware, folding screens, and other media.

Chinese and Japanese performers paint their faces based on the character they portray while Korean’s painted mask for festival and theatrical performances.

Japan’s Origami

Take a look on these dear students. The traditional art of paper folding in Japan is called origami. Its main objective is to transform or change a flat sheet of paper into a beautiful object or product without cutting the paper or without using any material or tool.

The word origami came from ‘ori’ meaning ‘folding’ and ‘kami’ meaning ‘paper’.

Common Models used in Japanese Origami

  • flowers
  • dolls
  • geometric shapes
  • animals (birds/fish)
Japan’s Woodblock Printing

Japan, they have this technique for printing text, images, or patterns which is called the woodblock printing. This process was widely used all throughout the East Asia. Woodblock printing was originated in China. This has also become a method for printing on paper. This method was adapted in Japan during the Edo period (1603-1867). The most common themes in Japan for printmaking are scenes from everyday life.

[illustration: a page of printed Chinese-style text and patterns, reproduced from a woodblock print]

Manga in Japan

The word “manhwa” or “manga” linguistically means comics in Japanese. The current usage of the terms “manhwa” and “manhua” in English is largely explained by the international success of the Japanese manga.

[illustration: comic strip pages in black and white; printed labels include “EL PASO HERALD” and “Bringing Up Father”]

As you observed on the picture of anime my dear students, their image was very captivated and attractive. That’s the reason why young children nowadays are very fond of it.

Most manga conform to a style developed in Japan in the late 19th century, though the art form has a long prehistory in earlier Japanese art.

Animation in Japan

The term ‘anime’ is derived from the English word ‘animation’ and in Japan is used to refer to all forms of animated media.

Outside Japan, the term refers specifically to animation from Japan or to a Japanese-disseminated animation style often characterized by colorful graphics, vibrant characters and fantastical themes. This culturally abstract approach to the word’s meaning may open the possibility of anime produced in countries other than Japan.

Anime production typically focuses less on the animation of movement and more on the realism of settings as well as the use of camera effects, including panning, zooming, and angle shots.

Korea’s Theatre Mask

Korean mask is primarily used in the religious activities but as time goes by, its purpose is not just on religious but also like central features for any entertainment such as dramas and dancing. Mask can be found everywhere in the world but Korean mask is different and unique.

Mask is painted according to the characters they will portray. Korean mask is categorized into religious who is used to ward off evil spirits and artistic mask used for dances and theatre shows or shows.

Other names of Korean masks are:

  • gamyeon,
  • gwangdae,
  • chorani,
  • talbak and
  • talbagaji.
Drums

Korean drums play a significant role in the traditional Korean music from folk music to court music. These drums were used in accompanying instruments especially in important events or shows.

[transcriber’s note: the table has the title “Types of Korea’s drums” and no column headings]

Types of Korea’s drums
JangguA double headed hourglass-shaped
BukA barrel drum
galgoA double headed hourglass-shaped but only with two sticks
DoSingle pellet drum on a pole
K-Pop

Do you know the popular Backstreet Boys group here in our country? What do they do? Filipinos are fun of expressing their feelings or what’s on their mind through dancing. Dancing also is one way of exercising our body.

The K-pop or Korean pop is a popular music that comes from South Korea. The modern K-pop idolism now that teenagers and young adults screamed out continues to spread all over the country and especially here in our country. This group consist either girls or boys which come from the South Korea.
