This is the Grade 6 Mathematics Quarter 2 Module 7, Working with Order of Operations, a self-learning module (Alternative Delivery Mode, First Edition, 2020) from the Department of Education Region VI. It is for Grade 6 learners studying at home or in class. After it, learners can explain the GEMDAS rule and solve expressions with two or more operations on whole numbers, with or without exponents and grouping symbols.
What learners will learn
After going through this module, learners are expected to:
- recognize order of operations on whole numbers;
- interpret and explain the Grouping, Exponent, Multiplication, Division, Addition, and Subtraction (GEMDAS) rule (M6NS-IIf-148); and
- perform two or more operations on whole numbers with or without exponents and grouping symbols (M6NS-IIf-149).
Lessons in this module
- Lesson 1: Performing Two or More Operations on Whole Numbers without Exponents and Grouping Symbols. Learners use the MDAS rule to solve expressions that mix addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
- Lesson 2: Performing Two or More Operations on Whole Numbers with Exponents and Grouping Symbols. Learners extend the rule to GEMDAS, working first inside parentheses or brackets and then on exponents.
Lesson 1: The MDAS rule
The module explains that we need a rule when an expression has two or more operations. Without it, we might calculate in the wrong order and get a wrong answer. MDAS stands for Multiplication, Division, Addition, and Subtraction. To use it:
- Multiply or divide as you go from left to right.
- Add or subtract as you go from left to right.
Multiplication does not always come before division, and addition does not always come before subtraction. You do whichever one appears first from left to right.
Example: checking Agnes’s work
Agnes solved 8 – 5 + 4 x 7 ÷ 2 by working straight from left to right and got 24.5. The module shows the correct solution:
| Step | What to do |
|---|---|
| 8 – 5 + 4 x 7 ÷ 2 | Multiply first (it comes before division) |
| = 8 – 5 + 28 ÷ 2 | Then divide |
| = 8 – 5 + 14 | Subtract first (it comes before addition) |
| = 3 + 14 | Then add |
| = 17 | Answer |
Agnes was wrong because she started with subtraction instead of multiplication.
A second example, 16 ÷ 4 x 5 + 7 – 8, starts with division because it comes first from left to right: 4 x 5 + 7 – 8, then 20 + 7 – 8, then 27 – 8, which gives 19.
Lesson 2: The GEMDAS rule
GEMDAS stands for Grouping symbols, Exponent, Multiplication, Division, Addition, and Subtraction. The module lists four steps:
- Perform the operations inside the grouping symbols first.
- Find the value of the number in exponential notation.
- Multiply or divide as you go from left to right.
- Add or subtract as you go from left to right.
Example: whose answer is correct?
Two pupils solved (4 x 10) + 10² ÷ 5.
- Parentheses first: 40 + 10² ÷ 5
- Exponent next: 40 + 100 ÷ 5
- Division before addition: 40 + 20
- Answer: 60
Pupil B got 60 and is correct. Pupil A added 40 + 100 before dividing and got 28.
More worked examples from the module
- 3 + [(7 x 4) – 6]: work inside the brackets (multiply, then subtract) to get 3 + 22, which is 25.
- 8 x 5³ – 9 ÷ 3 + 2: the exponent first gives 8 x 125 – 9 ÷ 3 + 2. Multiply and divide to get 1000 – 3 + 2. Then subtract and add to get 999.
How to use this module
Each lesson follows the same parts: What I Know (pretest), What’s In (review), What’s New, What is It (discussion), What’s More (practice), What I Have Learned, What I Can Do, Assessment, and Additional Activities. Answer keys for each lesson are at the end of that lesson.
- Learners: Take the pretest first to see what you already know, then go through the parts in order. Write all answers on a separate answer sheet, not on the module. Check your work with the answer key only after you finish, and be honest. Activities include finding mistakes in other people’s solutions and placing operation signs or parentheses to make statements true.
- Parents: Help your child read the directions carefully and work one part at a time. Ask them to say the MDAS or GEMDAS steps out loud as they solve.
- Teachers: The Assessment at the end of each lesson works as a post-test. The error-analysis tasks in What’s New and What I Can Do are useful for discussing common mistakes, such as working strictly from left to right.
If learners have questions or find a task hard, they should ask their teacher or facilitator.
Frequently asked questions
What grade and quarter is this module for?
It is Mathematics Grade 6, Quarter 2, Module 7: Working with Order of Operations.
What does GEMDAS mean?
GEMDAS stands for Grouping symbols, Exponent, Multiplication, Division, Addition, and Subtraction. You work inside grouping symbols first, then exponents, then multiply or divide from left to right, then add or subtract from left to right.
Do I always multiply before I divide?
No. Multiplication and division are done in the order they appear from left to right, and so are addition and subtraction. For example, in 16 ÷ 4 x 5 + 7 – 8 you divide first.
Does the module have an answer key?
Yes. Each of the two lessons ends with an answer key for its pretest, activities, assessment, and additional activities.
What competencies does the module cover?
It covers interpreting and explaining the GEMDAS rule (M6NS-IIf-148) and performing two or more operations on whole numbers with or without exponents and grouping symbols (M6NS-IIf-149).

Lesson 1: Performing Two or More Operations on Whole Numbers without Exponents and Grouping Symbols
You have learned how to give the value of numbers expressed in exponential notation in the past lesson. Now, you will learn how to perform two or more operations on whole numbers without exponents and grouping symbols.
What’s In
Determine the order of operations in each mathematical expression. Write A for Addition, S for Subtraction, M for Multiplication, and D for Division. Write your answers on your answer sheet.
- 8 + 4 ÷ 2
- 12 + 8 – 8
- 9 x 54 ÷ 6
- 42 ÷ 6 x 15
- 72 – 9 + 6
What’s New
Study and analyze the problem below.
Agnes got sick and was absent from school for a week. When she returned, she tried working on a task posed by her teacher. The task and her solution are shown below.
8 – 5 + 4 x 7 ÷ 2 = 3 + 4 x 7 ÷ 2 = 7 x 7 ÷ 2 = 49 ÷ 2 = 24.5
Is Agnes’ answer correct? Why or why not?
What is It
It is important to follow a rule when performing two or more operations on whole numbers. Without this rule, we might calculate them in the wrong order and get a wrong answer.
Do you still remember the MDAS?
Let us use this rule to check Agnes’ solution.
8 – 5 + 4 x 7 ÷ 2 [First, multiply or divide. From left to right, multiplication appears first before division. So, “multiply” first and then “divide”.]
= 8 – 5 + 28 ÷ 2 [Next, add or subtract. From left to right, subtraction appears first before addition. So, “subtract” first and then “add”.]
= 8 – 5 + 14
= 3 + 14
= 17 [This is the answer.]
Agnes’ answer is incorrect because the answer should be 17.
In her solution, she performed the operations from left to right, but started with subtraction instead of multiplication.
Here is another example:
16 ÷ 4 x 5 + 7 – 8 [First, multiply or divide. From left to right, division appears first before multiplication. So, “divide” first and then “multiply”.]
= 4 x 5 + 7 – 8
= 20 + 7 – 8 [Next, add or subtract. From left to right, addition appears first before subtraction. So, “add” first and then “subtract”.]
= 27 – 8
= 19 [This is the answer.]
What’s More

What’s New
During a game, two pupils wrote down their solutions to the following task posted by their teacher.
(4 x 10) + 10² ÷ 5
| Pupil A’s Solution: | Pupil B’s Solution: |
|---|---|
| (4 x 10) + 10² ÷ 5 | (4 x 10) + 10² ÷ 5 |
| = 40 + 10² ÷ 5 | = 40 + 10² ÷ 5 |
| = 40 + 100 ÷ 5 | = 40 + 100 ÷ 5 |
| = 140 ÷ 5 | = 40 + 20 |
| = 28 | = 60 |
Whose answer is correct? Why?
What is It
To find out whose answer is correct, we are going to follow the rules in performing two or more operations with exponents and grouping symbols by using the GEMDAS rule.
Let us evaluate the expression (4 x 10) + 10² ÷ 5.
(4 x 10) + 10² ÷ 5 First, perform operations within each grouping symbols.
= 40 + 10² ÷ 5 Next, evaluate exponential expressions.
= 40 + 100 ÷ 5 Then, perform multiplication or division from left to right
or whichever operation comes first.
= 40 + 20 Finally, perform addition or subtraction from left to right
or whichever operation comes first.
= 60 This is the answer.
Pupil B’s solution is correct.
Pupil A’s solution is incorrect. The operations within the grouping symbols were performed first, then the exponential expression was evaluated, but addition was performed first instead of division.
Here are some examples:
Example A.
3 + [(7 x 4) – 6] First, perform operations within each grouping symbols.
So, multiply, then subtract the expression within the brackets.
= 3 + [28 - 6]
= 3 + 22 Then, perform addition or subtraction from left to right
or whichever operation comes first.
= 25 This is the answer.
Example B.
8 x 5³ - 9 ÷ 3 + 2 First, evaluate exponential expressions.
= 8 x 125 - 9 ÷ 3 + 2 Next, perform multiplication or division from left to right
or whichever operation comes first. So, "multiply" first then "divide".
= 1000 - 9 ÷ 3 + 2
= 1000 - 3 + 2 Then, perform addition or subtraction from left to right
or whichever operation comes first. So, "subtract" first then "add".
= 997 + 2
= 999 This is the answer.
What’s More
A. Identify the order of operations to be performed in each expression. Write G for Grouping symbols, E for Exponents, A for Addition, S for Subtraction, M for Multiplication, and D for Division. Write your answers on your answer sheet.
Example: 30 ÷ 5 + (5 x 6) x 19 Answer: G, D, M, A
- 20 + 5 x (15 – 8)
- 42 – (3 x 8) + (48 ÷ 4)
- 84 ÷ 6 x 2² – (9 + 7)
- (18 x 7) – (22 – 20)³
- 12² – 6 x 4 + 12
B. Match the expression on Column A with the answer on Column B. Write the letter of the correct answer on your answer sheet.
| Column A | Column B |
|---|---|
| 1) 10 – 3 + 7 x (24 ÷ 3) | A. 84 |
| 2) (13 – 5) x 3 + 7 – 8 | B. 23 |
| 3) 5 x 4 + (12 + 2²) – 30 ÷ 3 | C. 21 |
| 4) 8 x 3³ + 63 ÷ 9 – 6 | D. 217 |
| 5) 5 x 4 + (16 ÷ 4) – 3 | E. 26 |
| F. 63 |
What I Have Learned
We follow the GEMDAS rule when performing two or more operations with exponents and grouping symbols. GEMDAS stands for Grouping symbols, Exponent, Multiplication, Division, Addition and Subtraction.
To use this rule, just remember:
- Perform the operations inside the grouping symbols first.
- Find the value of the number in exponential notation.
- Multiply or divide as you go from left to right.
- Add or subtract as you go from left to right.
What I Can Do
A. Below are mathematical expressions with solutions. Write the word CORRECT if the solution is correct and if the solution is wrong, write the correct solution. Do this on your answer sheet.
- 12 – 3 + 18 ÷ (6 × 3)
= 12 – 3 + 18 ÷ 18
= 12 – 3 + 1
= 9 + 1
= 10
[transcriber’s note: each solution is followed by an empty answer box on the printed page]
7 x (9 – 3) + 8
= 7 x 6 + 8
= 7 x 14
= 9818 – (2⁴ ÷ 4) + 7
= 18 – (16 ÷ 4) + 7
= 18 – 4 + 7
= 18 + 11
= 29[9 × (9 ÷ 3) – 9] + 6
= [9 × 3 – 9] + 6
= [27 – 9] + 6
= 18 + 6
= 24(16 ÷ 8) x 15 – 3³ + 8
= (16 ÷ 8) x 15 – 27 + 8
= 8 – 27 + 8
