MAPEH Arts 6 Quarter 2 Module 6: Graphic Design (Poster Layout)

Grade 6 MAPEH Arts Q2 Module 6 teaches graphic design, posters, and the seven basics of a layout, with a Paint 3D poster activity and answer key.

This is the Grade 6 MAPEH (Arts) Self-Learning Module for Quarter 2, Module 6: Graphic Design (Poster Layout). It was developed by DepEd Region VI – Western Visayas for home-based learning. It teaches learners what graphic design, posters, and layout are. It then walks them through planning and making their own poster, first on paper and then with the Paint 3D app on a computer.

On this page 7 sections

What learners will learn

After going through this module, the learner is expected to:

  • Realize that art processes, elements and principles still apply even with the use of technologies (A6EL-IIe).

The module has one lesson, Lesson 1: Graphic Design (Poster Layout). It applies this competency to making graphic designs, especially poster layouts.

Key ideas: graphic design, posters, and layout

The module defines these terms:

  • Graphic design is a field of art that communicates a specific message to a group of people through words and pictures. It is commonly linked with the commercial art of business.
  • Graphic designers are the artists in this field. Agencies or companies hire them to create designs that look good and also communicate ideas or concepts well.
  • A poster is a kind of placard or announcement. Its goal is to communicate information through words, pictures, or symbols.
  • Layout is a very important part of making a poster. It is how everything in the poster is arranged.

In a poster, words and images are inseparable. They work together to tell the poster’s message.

Basics of a layout: seven steps

The module gives seven steps for planning a poster layout:

  1. Materials: illustration board or cartolina, glue, scissors, ruler (T-square), soft pencil, eraser, and coloring materials. The maximum size is printed as 32 high by 24 inches wide.
  2. Studies or sketches: move your elements around and sketch as many small thumbnail ideas as you can. Critique them, pick your best three, and turn them into final designs.
  3. Theme: decide on the important message you want viewers to remember from your poster.
  4. Title: decide where to place it. The title should be the largest text and readable from at least 5 feet away. It should tie in with and be supported by the other elements. Avoid clutter: less is more.
  5. Colors: choose colors that help carry the message and unify all the elements. Too many colors are distracting.
  6. Words and fonts: choose the font, the font size, and where the text goes. These add to the power and visual appeal of the design.
  7. White space: this is the empty area of a poster, with no text or pictures. Too little overwhelms the viewer’s eye, and too much makes it wander. Aim for a balance between empty and filled areas.

Making a digital poster in Paint 3D

In the What I Can Do part, learners follow the layout steps to make a sample poster on the computer:

  1. Open the Paint 3D app. Click Menu, then Open, then Browse files, and find the image you want to use.
  2. Insert the image or background.
  3. Enhance, resize, and move the image to match your layout plan.
  4. Add your text with the Text tool, using fonts that suit your theme and main idea.
  5. Print your finished poster.

This activity shows the module’s main point: the same art processes, elements, and principles apply whether you work with paper or with technology.

How to use this module

The module follows the usual parts of a DepEd self-learning module, in this order:

PartWhat learners do
What I Know10-item multiple-choice pretest
What’s In10 yes-or-no review questions on digital painting
What’s New and What is ItRead the lesson, then study four artworks and discuss their messages
What’s MoreAnswer five questions and make a sample poster and layout, then reflect
What I Have LearnedReview the key definitions
What I Can DoMake a poster in Paint 3D
Assessment10-item true-or-false post-test
Additional ActivitiesCheck a list of attitudes and feelings about the artwork
  • Learners: write all answers on a separate sheet of paper, and do not mark the module. Take the pretest first. Use the answer key at the end honestly to check your work.
  • Parents: the poster activity needs a computer with Paint 3D and a printer. If you do not have these, ask the teacher about other options. The paper materials in Step 1 can still be used to make a poster by hand.
  • Teachers: the Notes to the Teacher ask you to check whether the learner met the objectives and to give praise for their work.

Graphic designers are the artists who are in the field of graphic design employed by designed agencies or companies to create for them designs that are not just visually appearing but are also effective in communicating ideas or concepts.

A poster is a kind of a placard or announcement that has as its goal of communication of information through words and pictures or symbols.

Layout is such an important part of making a poster.

Basics of a Layout

Step 1: Materials Illustration board or cartolina, glue, scissors, ruler (t-square), soft pencil, eraser, coloring materials, etc. Dimensions: 32’high x 24″inches wide max

Step 2: Studies/sketches Move your elements around. Sketch as many thumbnail ideas as possible. After critiquing your ideas, select your best three ideas and translate them into final designs.

Step 3: Theme Decide which important message you want to communicate to your viewers. Then, ask the message you want your poster design to be remembered.

Step 4: Title Decide where to place the title. The title should be the largest text, the most readable (from at least 5 ft away), and should tied with and supported by all the other elements on the poster design. Avoid clutter. Less is more!

Step 5: Colors Choose the colors that help communicate the message and unify all the elements together. Avoid too many colors, this is distracting.

Step 6: Words/Fonts Decide on what font to use, the font size and where these texts should be placed. These contributes to the power and visual appeal of the design.

Step 7: White Space White space is a vacant area in a poster. There are no texts, pictures or other graphic images covering the white space. The viewer’s eye will be overwhelmed if you have too little and wander if you have too much. Aim for a balance between areas without images and texts and areas with one.

What’s More

Now, you have learned your lessons on graphic design. Hey! It’s your time to show me that you learned.

Answer the following questions below:

  1. What is a poster? Make a sample.
  2. Whydoes an artist makes a poster?
  3. Is a poster important? Why?
  4. What is a layout? Make a sample.
  5. How important is a layout? Why?

What I Have Learned

Hey! Stop! Park your learning here.

  1. Have you learned something from lesson 1?
  2. Can you name them?

Graphic Design is a field of art that has something to do with the communication of some specific messages to a group of people through the use of words and pictures.

Graphic designers are the artists who are in the field of graphic design employed by designed agencies or companies to create designs that are not just visually appearing but are also effective in communicating ideas or concepts.

A poster is a kind of a placard or announcement that has its goal of communication of information through words and pictures or symbols.

Layout is such an important part of making a poster.

In a poster, words and images are inseparable. They work together to tell the message of the poster.

Therefore, art processes, elements and principles can be applied in the same way even with the use of technologies. The elements and principles are all about labeling the components in which aesthetic is mainly judged in a universal way.

Wow! Great! Congratulations!
