This is the Grade 6 MAPEH (Arts) Quarter 2 Module 9 self-learning module, Graphic Design (Poster Layout). It was developed by DepEd Region VI (Western Visayas) as an Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) module, first edition 2020. It is for Grade 6 learners studying at home. After the module, learners should be able to plan and create their own advertisement, commercial, or announcement poster.
On this page 7 sections
What learners will learn
The module has one learning competency. After going through it, the learner is expected to:
- Create an advertisement/commercial or announcement poster (A6PL-IIh)
Lessons in this module
The module has a single lesson.
- Lesson 1: Graphic Design (Poster Layout). Learners look at sample announcement, advertisement, and commercial posters and learn what makes a poster effective. They then design their own commercial poster by hand, improve it using computer applications, and make a final poster from given event details.
What makes a good poster
The module defines a poster as a kind of placard or announcement whose goal is to communicate information through words and pictures or symbols. A good poster must catch the interest of the people it is meant for.
The module names two main things a designer should think about:
- The main visual. The graphic designer should know who the audience is and what the poster is for. Then they decide whether to use a photo, an illustration, or both.
- Typography. The text should be easy to read and should help get the poster’s ideas across.
The true-or-false review in the lesson, with its answer key, adds more points:
- Layout is an important part of making a poster.
- Posters can be small, such as leaflets or handbills, or large, such as billboards.
- Graphic designers are the people who work in the field of graphic design.
- Art processes, elements, and principles can be applied the same way even when using technology.
- The title should be readable and should tie in with and support the other elements of the poster.
- The font and font size of the text add to the power and visual appeal of the design.
- White space is a vacant (empty) area in a poster.
Types of posters and examples
The module shows three kinds of posters:
| Type | Sample in the module |
|---|---|
| Announcement poster | A “Grand Opening” poster |
| Advertisement poster | A “Mega Sale” poster with discounts of up to 70% off |
| Commercial poster | An Easter promo poster with a discount on a car painting service |
It also shows Philippine commercial posters, such as tourism posters and posters for the Philippine Harvest food and travel fair, the Kalibo Ati-Atihan opening salvo, and the Numancia kite festival. Learners use guide questions to study each one: What does the poster represent? Who is the target customer? Where can you buy the item? Which features attract you most? Do the font and color capture the character of the poster?
How to use this module
Work through the parts in order and write your answers on a separate sheet of paper, not on the module.
- What I Know: Name at least five advertisement or commercial posters you have seen in your community.
- What’s In: Answer the 10-item true-or-false review. The answer key at the end of the module covers this part.
- What’s New and What is It: Study the sample posters and answer the guide questions.
- What’s More: Create a commercial poster of a product you wish to sell.
- What I Have Learned: Reflect on what made your poster attractive and what would make customers want to buy the product.
- What I Can Do: Improve the poster you made by hand using the computer applications you have learned.
- Assessment: Create a commercial poster for a Christmas Anniversary Sale on December 22 to 23, 2020, at Aklanon City Mall.
- Additional Activities: Improve your output based on your teacher’s suggestions.
For learners: Check your true-or-false answers honestly with the answer key. Ask your teacher or facilitator if any part is hard to understand.
For parents: Help your child find paper and coloring materials for the hand-drawn poster. If you can, also give access to a computer for the improvement task.
For teachers: The posters from What’s More, What I Can Do, and the Assessment are the main outputs to check. The Additional Activities part relies on your feedback, so plan to return comments for learners to act on.
