On this page 6 sections
What learners will learn
The module states one main competency:
- Appreciate the elements and principles applied in layouting (A6PL-IIf)
The lesson also asks learners to:
- Identify the elements and principles of arts
- Appreciate the elements and principles applied in layouting
Key ideas in the module
Graphic design, posters, and layout
The review questions in the module set out these basic terms:
- Graphic design is a field of art about communicating a specific message to a group of people through words and pictures.
- A poster is a kind of placard or announcement whose goal is to communicate information through words and pictures or symbols.
- Layout is a very important part of making a poster. The person who arranges everything in the poster is a graphic artist, according to the answer key.
- The title should be readable and should tie together and support the other elements of the poster.
- Font and font size add to the power and visual appeal of a design.
- White space is a vacant area in a poster.
Elements of art used in layout
The lesson covers these elements, with a picture example for each:
| Element | What the module shows or says |
|---|---|
| Line | Solid, wavy, dotted, and dash-dot lines |
| Shape | Triangle, square, circle, and trapezoid |
| Color | Red, blue, orange, yellow, green, and purple samples |
| Value | How dark or light an area looks (light blue and dark blue) |
| Texture | What a surface looks and feels like (wood grain and a rough grey surface) |
| Size | The letter A printed in four sizes |
| Space | Positive and negative space, shown with a face-and-vase image |
| Text | The word “Art” in six different typefaces |
Principles of art used in layout
The lesson names balance, alignment, repetition, and contrast as the principles. The activities ask learners to recognize contrast (for example, high and low contrast on a color wheel), repetition (a pattern of repeating arcs), and alignment (colored pencils arranged in a circle). The pretest describes alignment as lining up the elements of a design along the top, bottom, center, or sides.
Parts of the module
- What I Know: a 10-item true-or-false pretest on the elements and principles of design.
- What’s In: a 10-item multiple-choice review on graphic design, posters, and layout.
- What’s New: learners name pictures using the elements (shapes, lines, colors, textures, value, size, space, text) and the principles (contrast, repetition, alignment). They then compare two flower paintings, a hibiscus (Artwork 1) and plumerias (Artwork 2), using guide questions about the elements, principles, and feelings shown.
- What’s More: learners make their own artwork that reflects life in their community, using the elements and principles learned.
- What I Have Learned: a short reflection on what should be applied to better appreciate an artwork, and why.
- What I Can Do: learners write an observation and appreciation of their own artwork.
- Assessment: learners complete the sentence “I love to look at the artwork because of its ___” about a painting of yellow daisies in a vase.
How to use this module
- Learners: Answer the pretest first, then work through each part in order. Write your answers on a separate sheet of paper and do not mark the module. Check your work honestly with the answer key, and ask your teacher or facilitator if a task is unclear.
- Parents and facilitators: Help your child find drawing materials for the community artwork in What’s More. Talk with them about the feelings and details they notice in the paintings.
- Teachers: The answer key covers What’s In and What’s New. The artwork, written appreciation, and assessment sentence are open-ended, so check them for correct use of the elements and principles.
