MAPEH Arts 6 Quarter 2 Module 4: Digital Painting

Grade 6 MAPEH Arts Quarter 2 Module 4 on digital painting: software and hardware, advantages of computers in painting, activities, and answer key.

This is the Grade 6 MAPEH (Arts) Quarter 2, Module 4 self-learning module, “Digital Painting.” It was developed by DepEd Region VI – Western Visayas for home-based learning under the Alternative Delivery Mode (First Edition, 2020). It helps learners understand how computers, hardware, and software are used to make paintings, and asks them to create a digital painting of their own.

On this page 5 sections

What learners will learn

After going through this module, the learner is expected to:

  • Utilize art skills using new technologies (hardware and software) in digital painting (A6PR-IId)

The module has one lesson, Lesson 1: Digital Painting.

Key ideas in the module

Traditional painting and digital painting

The lesson opens with two self-portraits side by side. One is an oil on canvas painting by the impressionist Vincent van Gogh. The other is a digital version made by Tadao Cern. Unlike Van Gogh, Tadao Cern uses the computer to express himself as an artist. Learners are asked to guess which one was painted digitally, explain how they could tell, and say which they like better.

The module defines two basic terms:

  • Software is a collection of data or computer instructions that tells the computer how to work.
  • Hardware includes the physical, tangible parts or components of a computer.

In the pretest, digital painting is described as an emerging art form that uses traditional painting techniques such as watercolor, oils, and impasto. You also need a computer and an operating system to create one.

Advantages of using computers in painting

The module explains that computers have changed painting in the last few decades and make almost every part of it easier:

  • Errors can easily be corrected.
  • Work is done in an organized, no-mess environment.
  • Colors do not fade, and brushes never wear out.
  • Stages and versions of the artwork can be saved, filed, and easily retrieved.
  • Work can be transferred or printed on almost any media.
  • Work can be formatted and easily e-mailed to interested parties.

Digital painting as a hobby and a career

Digital painting can be a fun, lasting hobby, and it can also become a living. The module lists fields where digital painters are sought after: digital animation (movies and video games), fashion design, cartoons, poster making, crafts, and t-shirt design. A digital painting competition at Technopark is shown as an example.

What makes a “real painting”

The module stresses that drawing skill is only one part of being a good digital painter. You also need to prepare everything that helps you get your ideas across and add details that make your work stand out. It notes that a painting is considered a real (traditional) painting if:

  1. the canvas peeps through the oil paint
  2. the brushstrokes appear thick or thin on the board or canvas
  3. the artist mixes and blends colors to build forms
  4. the watercolor washes can blend
  5. the watercolor is deposited on rough paper

How to use this module

The module follows the usual self-learning module parts, in this order:

  1. What I Know: a 10-item multiple-choice pretest on software, hardware, artists, and digital painting tools.
  2. What’s In: a 10-item true or false review on painting tools and techniques.
  3. What’s New: the Van Gogh and Tadao Cern comparison, with the definitions of software and hardware.
  4. What Is It: the main discussion on the advantages of computers, careers, and preparing for digital painting.
  5. What’s More: three questions. What is digital painting? How can you say that a painting is real? Who is the great impressionist who made the oil on canvas self-portrait?
  6. What I Have Learned and What I Can Do: a short summary, then a task to make a sample digital painting.
  7. Assessment: a 10-item checklist where learners mark the statements that describe their attitudes and feelings during and after doing the artwork.
  8. Additional Activities: make a painting using new technologies (hardware and software).

For learners: Write all answers on a separate sheet of paper and do not mark the module. Answer keys for the pretest and the What’s In activity are at the back. Check your work honestly after answering.

For parents: Help your child find a computer or device for the painting tasks if possible, and encourage them to ask the teacher when a task is unclear.

For teachers: The Notes to the Teacher ask you to check whether the learner’s work meets your objectives and to give praise.
