What learners will learn

The module has one objective:

  • Explain the effect of living in a healthful school and community (H6CMH-IIb-2).

It has one lesson only: Lesson 1 – The Effect of Living in a Healthful School and Community.

Key ideas: characteristics and their effects

The module begins with a simple idea. Living in a healthful school and community promotes a happy and healthy life. A community’s health comes from a healthy environment, and that environment is only possible when every member does their part.

The module sorts the characteristics of a healthful school and community into two groups. The physical environment is the place itself. The psychosocial environment is how people feel and treat each other there. For each characteristic, the module explains its effect on learners.

Physical environment

CharacteristicEffect on learners
SafeChildren are free from harm and danger. They play safely without injury and feel safe and secure.
Clean and good quality of air and water supplyChildren stay away from illnesses and diseases. Safe drinking water prevents waterborne diseases, and good air is healthy for the respiratory system and helps prevent diseases like asthma and pneumonia.
Aesthetically pleasing (clean and beautiful)Learners are motivated, ready, and open to learning. They feel happy in school, take part actively in class, and do better in their studies.
Flexible spacesA classroom with enough space lets children learn comfortably. A wide playground lets them play, move, and interact freely.

Psychosocial environment

CharacteristicEffect on learners
Warm atmosphereA welcoming, friendly place builds trust and respect. Learners develop a positive attitude towards learning and are less likely to be absent because they enjoy staying in school.
Healthy interpersonal relationshipsLearners and teachers interact positively. This creates harmony and camaraderie, and children are motivated to learn.
Free from abuse and discriminationChildren develop self-esteem and a sense of belonging. They feel valued, respected, secure, and accepted for who they are.

In short, a healthful school and community lead to healthy, safe, motivated learners. An unhealthful one, such as a polluted river or a crowded, unfriendly classroom, can lead to illness, absences, lack of focus, and poor school performance.

Activities in the module

  • What I Know (pretest): 10 items. Learners write Agree or Disagree for each description of a healthful school and community.
  • What’s In: Charts showing the characteristics of healthful physical and psychosocial environments and their effects.
  • What’s New: Learners compare two pictures, a clean town with a park and a boy littering beside a polluted river. They answer questions about which place is healthful and which they would prefer to live in.
  • What is It: The main discussion, which pairs each characteristic with its effect.
  • What’s More: Learners write Yes or No to tell whether each of five pictures shows an effect of a healthful school and community.
  • What I Have Learned: Learners match five characteristics with their effects.
  • What I Can Do: Learners list at least five effects of living in a healthful school and community and five effects of living in an unhealthful one.
  • Assessment (post-test): 10 True or False items.
  • Additional Activity: Learners write five effects of a healthful school and community in their own words.

How to use this module

  • Learners: Start with the pretest to check what you already know. Then go through each part in order. Write all answers on a separate sheet of paper and do not mark the module. Answer the post-test at the end, then check your work against the answer key honestly.
  • Parents: Help your child read the directions and talk through the picture activities. Ask about the healthy and unhealthy places you see around your home and barangay.
  • Teachers: The answer key covers the pretest, What’s More, What I Have Learned, and the Assessment. Answers to What’s New, What I Can Do, and the Additional Activity will vary, so check them for understanding.

If anything in the module is unclear, learners should ask their teacher or facilitator.
