This is the Grade 4 English Quarter 4 Module 5 self-learning module, “Types of Journalistic Writing.” It teaches learners to tell apart four kinds of articles found in newspapers and online publications: the news report, the opinion article, the feature article, and the sports article. It is built for learning at home, and learning buddies Kuya Pat, Ella, and Eloy guide the learner through each part.
What learners will learn
After this module, learners should be able to:
- Distinguish among types of journalistic writing, such as news report, opinion article, feature article, and sports news article.
The module has one lesson, Lesson 5, “Distinguish Among Types of Journalistic Writing.” It builds on Module 4, where learners identified the features of journalistic writing.
The four types of journalistic writing
The module explains that journalistic writing is about writing articles that can be published in newspapers and online publications. It is not only about reporting news. It can also mix facts with personal opinions, presented to readers in a convincing way.
| Type | What it does | Where it appears in a newspaper |
|---|---|---|
| News report | Informs readers of what is happening in the world around them | News Section |
| Opinion article | Mainly reflects the author’s opinion about a subject | Opinion Section |
| Feature article | Describes and narrates something the author wants to write about, such as places, events, lifestyles, or people | Lifestyle Page |
| Sports article | Reports on sporting topics and competitions | Sports Page |
News report
A news report tells about a very recent, extraordinary event that interests the public. The module’s example reports that the Philippines’ total COVID-19 cases passed 2 million, with figures from the Department of Health.
Opinion article
An opinion article mainly shows what the writer thinks. In the example “A Better Place,” the author argues that, even with different religions and views in life, we should treat others well and respect everyone.
Feature article
A feature article is non-fiction writing that describes and narrates. In the example “My Teacher, My Hero,” the author describes a favorite Grade 4 teacher who taught lessons in life and was like a second mother. Other examples in the module include a description of Mayon Volcano and a piece on Tandang Sora (Melchora Aquino).
Sports article
A sports article reports on a specific sports event. The example tells how Hidilyn Diaz won the Philippines’ first Olympic gold medal in weightlifting at the Tokyo Olympics. The module points out the key difference: sports news reports on a specific sports event, while a news report tells about unusual and significant events that happened recently around us.
Parts and activities of the module
- What I Know (pretest): Learners read five short passages and label each as a news report, opinion article, feature article, or sports news article.
- What’s In: A review of Module 4. Learners write YES or NO for statements about the features of journalistic writing.
- What’s New: Learners read a short article, “Good Manners,” and answer three comprehension questions, including what type of article it is.
- What is It: The lesson itself, with a definition and an example for each type.
- What’s More: Learners classify five more passages, such as a report on Metro Manila shifting to GCQ and a boxing result.
- Additional Activities: Learners cut one sample article for each type from magazines or newspapers at home, label them, and paste them on their answer sheets.
The answer key also lists answers for What I Have Learned, What I Can Do, and an Assessment.
How to use this module
- Learners: Start with the pretest, then go through the parts in order. Write all answers on a separate sheet of paper, not on the module. Check your work with the answer key after each activity, and be honest when you do.
- Parents: Help your child find old newspapers or magazines for the final activity. Read the sample articles together and talk about which section of a newspaper each one would appear in.
- Teachers: The module includes notes for facilitators and parents. You can use the Additional Activities output, with its four labeled articles, to check whether learners can tell the types apart.
If learners have questions or find a task hard, the module tells them to ask their teacher or facilitator.

MANILA— RT-PCR test kits acquired by the Department of Health (DOH) through the budget agency’s procurement service (PS-DBM) were not nearly expired and also had a standard shelf life of 6 months, the agency said on Saturday.
In today’s school, many children struggle to learn to read. As many teachers and parents will attest, reading failure has a long-term consequence on children’s developing self-confidence and motivation to learn as well as on their later school performance.
What is happiness? Happiness to me is not having everything but it is the state of being contented and satisfied with what one has. A girl who finds her old little doll a playmate and sister who completes her day is a happy child. But an old man who has a lot of wealth and has achieved much successes can remain unhappy if he feels he still lacks many things. He is such a pity.
Unfortunately, today there is a lot of bad press about the state of education. But there are rays of hope out there in the system because certainly, schools are not bad though with some imperfections, and there are many wonderful teachers working hard to prepare the next generation.
Hidilyn Diaz celebrates with her team after winning the gold medal in the women’s 55 kg weightlifting event on July 26, 2021 during the Tokyo Olympics held at Tokyo, Japan.

As a teacher, she molded her pupils into better individuals equipped with great values. She did not only teach us lessons in her subject but some great lessons in life as well. She inspired us with her wisdom.
She was a second mother to me and to my other classmates. She was not just a teacher but a mother who loved wholeheartedly and unconditionally, a kind of love that never fails.

She brings home the much coveted and elusive Gold from the world’s most famous sports competition for a country which has been trying for the last 97 years.
“The journey to that Olympic podium wasn’t easy”, Diaz said so herself. Like many Filipino athletes, she had to face and overcome many challenges and trepidations over the years for the sports weightlifting that would later bring honor to the country.
Training for the Olympics is already hard. But the COVID-19 pandemic brought unprecedented trials to Diaz and her team. The biggest hurdle was getting through an additional 15 months of training because of the postponement of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics itself, which was supposed to have been held last year.

A former Olympic bronze medalist from Cuba, Yordenis Ugas defeated Manny Pacquiao by a margin of 101 to 88, according to CompuBox, and landed an incredible 59% of his power shots en route to a unanimous decision (115-113, 116-112, 116-112). CBS Sports also scored 116-112 in favor of Ugas.

Philippine history books said that prior to her incarceration, the then 84-year-old woman, also commonly called as the “Mother of the Revolution,” was arrested by the Spanish authorities in Barrio Pasong Putik in the then municipality of Novaliches in the old province of Manila.

but it also has its fair challenges. Peace and quiet are far and in between, which can be frustrating for those who work at home. But the upside to this is that grandparents can help take care of the kids as the parents go about their busy schedules. Families who aren’t fortunate enough to share the same home have to make that extra effort to reach out to their loved ones, more so for those with elders who aren’t tech savvy to order online for everyday essentials. Regular virtual calls to check on them have become a staple in routine. Whatever the setup is, we all share the same concern—the wellbeing of our grandparents/senior citizens should be part of our topmost priorities.
- Reading is fun! But should it be required? Many kids are assigned books to read over the summer. Some people say summer reading keeps kids’ minds sharp. Others say kids need a break.
Go to the Answer Key. If you got correctly the answer for each item, very good! You learned a lot. You are on the right track!
You are well-prepared for the next activity. If you did not get all the correct answers, you can do better for the second time. You can go back to the discussion. Keep in mind that successful people make mistakes too.
Additional Activities
This is the last task, Learner. Browse through the magazines or newspapers found in your home. Cut one sample article for each of the types of journalistic writing. Put labels on it. Paste all on your answer sheets.
If you are tired, you may take a few minutes to rest. We will wait for you. But if you are energetic enough, let’s move on the last activity. Savor the last activity of this module.
